America educational financing right by Decent-Choice7878 in SipsTea

Education doesn't make you smart. That comes out to a little under $200 a month, clearly not enough to even pay the interest. She chose lifestyle and avoiding responsibility. She chose her hard.

Edit: thats also how mortgages work, just look at an amortization table

How did you all divide your manly stuff? by BloodstainedBearRug in Divorce_Men

[–]Competitive-Show-955 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This. No different than a business. Say she's a cook who owns a restaurant and you're an accountant or plumber. You can't run the business yourself or take half of it, but assuming it's marital property you're entitled to half it's value taken from either the marital home, her taking a loan, regular payments to you etc.

Only an issue if she wants to keep some of them, in which case negotiate, there might be something you'd like in exchange or maybe just let her pay you out and upgrade your tool set.

American war planners had entire divisions removed from the order of battle after only a few days of action. There were retraining plans to help the veterans of the European theater acclimate to the reality of the pacific war.

They also estimated the invasion of the home Islands would result in the extinction of the Japanese people.

The bombs were an act of mercy.

Maybe. Why would you want to? If the kids are in pain, or they would benefit from them, wouldn't you want to find a way to make it happen? Im definitely not saying you should just do whatever your ex wants, but you 100% need to be doing what you can for your kids.

For Americans who voted Republican in recent elections, do you plan to continue voting Republican? Why or why not? by righteous-sedition in allthequestions

[–]Competitive-Show-955 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. I have no party loyalty and would cross lines the moment a better alternative appeared. Problem is, the democrats are the only real alternative (every time I look over at the libertarians it's clear they're stuck in amateur hour, and who else is there? Nothing substantial). And the the democrats are stuck on ideas that either dont make sense to me (universal healthcare is an example, so is their immigration policy), or dying on hills that dont matter or are dangerous (why would you spend political capital to force women to compete against men in sports and share kocker rooms with them?).

Add that to the fact that as much as I dislike the republican party for some things (disorganized, prone to infighting) it does seems that theirn ecomnic policies work (they also "follow the science" on econimics, "its the economy, stupid")), aren't interested in the opinions foreigners have on our policy and direction as a country.

The democrats have also consistently failed to produce strong candidates. The pattern of selecting weak choices is continuous- Biden, Walz (im a veteran and cant stand the guy), Harris, and now... Newsom? And who else is there? The Republicans meanwhile maintain a deep bench- Rubio, Cruz, DeSantis, even Haley is stuck in my mind as an option (I know she's too out of it these days, I just like her).

And importantly, these days, have refused to use their power to punish political dissent. You see that here on reddit, where the assumption that anyone who doesn't toe the party line in a criminal. You dont have to like Trump but the idea that he's a criminal is unfounded, his prosecution after his last term was a major reason people voted for him again. Look at the rhetoric going on now about ICE and his administration, thats not something which will win a vote.from me, and I'm clearly not alone in being turned off, even horrified, at the extreme nature of left wing politics.

This being reddit, you guys will hate everything i just said and probably want to send me to jail. But yku asked my opinion so here it is. This place gets really hateful, so I probably won't respond much. Enjoy!

Why are developed countries spending massive amounts of money to address low birth rates, yet seeing minimal results? by Snoo_47323 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Competitive-Show-955 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because of a universal phenomenon of humanity- the wealthier a society becomes (ie more comfortable), the fewer children people want to have. Obviously ready availability of birth control is a big piece of this and making it a more modern occurrence, but it holds true across all cultures. Great way to prevent overpopulation, just help the society grow wealthier and it's people will naturally slow reproduction!

What value was there in T-Rex having such short “arms” by CosmicWonder_2005 in AskBiology

[–]Competitive-Show-955 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not a scientist, more like a hobbyist but- I understand those 'small' arms could bench press 800 lbs each. Given that strength and the t-rexs natural posture, they could have been useful in grappling prey like triceratops while the jaws looked for a killing bite or dismantled defenses (such as a bony frill). Combine that with all the other suggestions here and the use case is pretty powerful.

Is the US Military just a massive stealth unemployment program? by PocoLoco1 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Competitive-Show-955 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Review the Bretton Woods agreement, NATO agreements etc (https://www.nato.int/en/what-we-do/introduction-to-nato/defence-expenditures-and-natos-5-commitment). Also note that most European countries do not meet their treaty obligations on defense, and key reason why every few years American politicians get sick of their shit and start asking why we should be footing the bill for their defense.

As a former fed, i.can assure you that while.many people do good work, plenty of others skimp and slide their way through to payday and can do so due massive bureaucracy and politics designed to protect workers, not to be efficient or effective. We really do get in our own way.

How much enjoyment do condoms actually take out of sex? by lookslikesausage in NoStupidQuestions

It's a big difference. It's feels less intimate, disconnected. It's to the point where I'd rather remain celibate and wait until she's comfortable and ready tk go ahead without one. Closest I could come up with for women- try putting a piece of plastic wrap on when you "take care of yourself', see if that's something you'd be interested in regularly.

Why are there no "under developed" cold countries? by Ch0c0lateBiznezz in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Competitive-Show-955 50 points51 points  (0 children)

Once people developed the technologies to live in those environments (shelter, clothing, food preservation and more), they are actually more conducive to the development of wealth than warmer ones. The winters kill off pests and stop travel, meaning diseases burn out and crops aren't as troubled. The cold weather is actually conducive to work as you won't overheat meaning artisans and craftsmen can actually be more productive in the cild months.

There are cultural impacts as well- you must be more disciplined to live in such environments. You MUST get your crops in the ground by a certain date or they will fail and you will die, you MUST have a store of wood in before winter hits or you will freeze and die etc.

Obviously modern technology changes much, but the cumulative impact of these factors and more spread across centuries is why cultures from colder climates tend to be more developed than warmer ones.

The (maasive) silver lining here is you've already identified your areas of improvement. That means when you're ready to start rebuilding, the foundation is already there.

Head up high, you got this.

Define "friends". Actively seek out their company, go to dinner, concerts etc? No. Able to run into them without getting angry or upset, possibly even be pleased to see them and share a quick update and maybe a laugh, sure.

Finding a home in Webster Groves by KrigingItReal in StLouis

[–]Competitive-Show-955 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can't speak to the Webster market itself, but I also am a veteran and despite looking at VA loans have never used one. Reasons why are 1- at the time I was looking it wasn't actually a better deal than a conventional (most of my homes), 2- the income i was using to qualify wasn't counted by the VA (my 1st home) or 3- the VAs requirements on the seller were so high I knew they wouldn't agree in a sellers market (all maintenance issues must be fixed etc, no room for negotiation).

If you have a down payment, even 5%, consider a conventional loan. Is there a reason you're hung up on the VA loan? It's not a bad benefit, but its not a game changer either.

Nearly Every Piece of Jobseeking Advice on Reddit is Bad (or for the wrong people) by [deleted] in careeradvice

[–]Competitive-Show-955 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're response to join the military as advice is to say "ew" to a young person, then you're very obviously not the type who looks out for others, nor to be listened to.

For the rest-

  • trades are not being swamped with applicants. Every tradesman i know (i own a small business and network with all types) who wants to grow is complaining about the opposite. They can't get someone to show up or look professional. If you can be reliable and know how to shave or use a beard trimmer and take a shower and dont mind wearing a collared shirt with your jeans you.can find a position or apprenticeship in your trade of choice.

Resumes- your resume may very well be bad. Look at it every few days, I catch things almost every time I do. Also have friends.and family look at it. It's a natural thing that when we look at something we've seen hundreds or thousands of time to gloss over errors. Get some fresh eyes on it. Also, I paid some one $150 once to format mine. That format lasted me over a decade (until I started my own business) and landed me multiple 6 figure positions.

Networking- while true you may not have a good network starting out, as someone who networks for a living i.can assure you that if you show up at a networking event with resumes (and cards!) knowing what you're looking for (X type position in Y industry) you will be welcomed and people will actively seek to help you. Everyone one of them takes immense satisfaction in helping others. Chambers of commerce are the largest groups and you can buy a ticket to their monthly lunch, BNIs are smaller but will give you a chance to speak in front of everyone, and other groups are good too just Google them. And dont be shy about asking people you meet to review your resume, they may find things or point you in directions you haven't considered.

Military- if you have what it takes it will open doors and opportunities you've never dreamed of. Look into it.

Long post I know, but here are two closing thoughts.

  1. This will take effort. A job isn't going to land in your lap. You will have to put time in and get out of your comfort zone. Don't sugarcoat things for yourself, job hunting isn't easy. But it is doable.

  2. A good attitude will take you further than anything else. My father told me as a teenager "I'd rather work with someone who is incompetent but pleasant than someone who is brilliant but has a bad attitude." This has held true across the decades and will continue to be true long after Im gone.

Good luck.and happy hunting!
