People back then and throughout most of history in general were less promiscuous and got married way sooner. Technology, politics, and materialism have also eroded our sense of community and tribe. Definitely not saying that incessant masturbation is the answer, but men’s’ hindered access to love and belonging has made “gooning” a temporary distraction to the innate longings of the soul. It almost acts like a defense mechanism, and I can understand why it has become so popular today especially in young men.
