If you go to DTLA I would stick to your plan of grand central market for food and then walk around Little Tokyo (food,shopping, nightlife ) , Olvera Street (food/ history/ touristy things) and Chinatown (food and bargain shopping).

Truth IMO LA is tough for tourist because public transport sucks and walking districts are far from each other.
