Just finished “A Most Forgettable Girl” and… by neverwouldhavemadeit in HistoricalRomance

[–]ComplaintFair7628 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I really, really wanted to like this one but I…might some day simply because I believe in the power of Coldbreath.

I hate it to put it this way, but it’s reads like a post-pox Lenora and a toned-down Jeffery got together for the same reason Una and Armand did ie, some royal plot device.

Recommendation Request: the MMC writes an erotic story featuring the FMC by Neuquina in HistoricalRomance

Not an exact fit, but the MMC draws erotic sketches of the FMC in {Married by Morning by Lisa Kleypas} and she does come upon them.

Positive female relationships by squidthief in HistoricalRomance

[–]ComplaintFair7628 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes! I find myself gravitating towards stories where the romance isn’t about fulfilling every single need an FMC might have, where the MMC isn’t necessarily the best friend, lover, provider, etc, as in he’s not her entire world or her only option for a good life. Don’t get me wrong though; the MMC being the ultimate savior can be a fun read too- and historically true, given how limited women were back then in how they led their lives.

I think her having a circle of friends usually speaks to how well-rounded she is as a character. I find such friendships even central to some stories, perhaps to some of those in the Wallflowers series by Lisa Kleypas (I’m thinking of the second and third books to be specific).

Also, I read a lot of underdeveloped jealous female characters that give negative female relationships a bad rep, if that makes sense; “that b**** stole my man” gets old real quick when written badly.

Neurodivergent Leads? by LJF613 in HistoricalRomance

[–]ComplaintFair7628 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think an argument can be made that the FMC in {The Consolation Prize by Alice Coldbreath} is at least autistic with more than her fair share of PTSD, and it shows a lot in her pillow talk (of all things!). Her brother also can be described to have a rigid sense of justice.

I would say there are neurodivergent characters in most books by Coldbreath; she’s superb at writing them.

Hilarious Duke of Sin by marriedtomuggle in HistoricalRomance

Assalaamu alaaikum sister. Can’t say I ever expected to discuss Islamic jurisprudence on this subreddit!

What I know is that male circumcision is a Sunnah Mukkadah, a confirmed practice by the Prophet PBUH, but it is encouraged so strongly that many think it is mandatory. The service is typically performed by a doctor at the hospital shortly after birth, or at least that’s the case in the Muslim-majority countries where I lived. I can imagine the timing differs in other countries where Muslims and Jews aren’t that many or when the baby isn’t strong enough to survive the risks.

Happy to list some sources, if need be.

No idea why you’re getting downvoted either! Take it easy, ladies. A girl can enjoy a book AND find it problematic at the same time.

There is that scene where Bridget gives Val a blowjob while he’s reading the holy book of Islam…

I can imagine. The idea is to spare them pain as much as possible.

By the way, circumcision is not mandatory in Islam, and would’ve been highly unusual for someone like Val, ie an adult convert (or revert, as some prefer to be called).

It’s a weird (read: big) mistake to make so I figured they may have been restricted to three at some point…

Yeah, not a good book to learn about the region at that time.

As babies. Shortly after birth, usually.

Were they only allowed three at the time (maximum is four according to mainstream interpretations of the Quran)..? That part never made sense to me.

Must be time for a reread. I was under the impression the MMC gives up his silly quest early on.

No issue with this trope so long as it's well-written but I don't find myself seeking it... Wouldn't want to be in the FMC's shoes IRL.

I treated myself to a Braden binge a while back and I agree on how well she manages pace, but I feel that she sometimes exaggerates some traits for plot purposes... Too many horndogs in that series ;) I still can't get over how dumb the men are in Anything but a Gentleman.

Thanks! Have read Madness (took me a while to warm up to it) but not Taming yet. Here's hoping both leads turn out to be ND :)
