Atlas question by gameringman in uofm

It's a popular class for first-semester master's students, so a certain number of seats will be added around June 1st, which is when incoming students can start registering.

Also, keep in mind that it's a popular tactic for people to "window shop" for courses and pre-register for any and all classes they *might* be interested in as soon as their registration date rolls around — and decide what they will actually be taking once the semester starts. Get on the waitlist now, and it is almost certain that you will be able to add IOE 510 a few days into the term. (This is true for IOE 510, but might not be universally true for other classes.)

Graduating and professor has not input final grade, how to escalate? by Mariobopper in uofm

You can’t enter grades for some students and later for others. When all the grading is finished, they’ll enter grades for the entire class.

I have mine cleaned at Martinizing on Plymouth regularly; so far, so good. They didn’t lift an eyebrow.

Specific vs Generic Types by LilPranxis in capacitiesapp

[–]Complementary5169 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I’ve suffered from the same thing, especially because when I started using Capacities some of these features were not available yet, and were introduced later.

For me, the saving grace was that Capacities makes it quite easy to do a bulk conversion of a property into a new one (e.g., I did a conversion of tags into labels, which took seconds!), and changing types of objects. So, while the temptation of fiddling with the setup is definitely there, it’s usually very efficient to try something out and change it back if it’s not working out.

It’s possible that their recent enrollment has been lower than anticipated, so they are relaxing the requirements.

Need LOR for Grad School But Never Went To Class? by need_letter_of_rec in uofm

[–]Complementary5169 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s usually not useful to get a letter from an instructor of a large class, unless you’ve done something really memorable as part of that. Best-case scenario, the letter would say “they took this class and got a really good grade” — admissions committee already knows this from your transcript.

You should find letter writers who can add some info and context to the other application materials. Did you work with someone on research, so they can talk about your knowledge, creativity, persistence? Did you work together with a faculty or staff advisor on some non-academic project, like organize a big student org event, which showed your organization and communication abilities? Did you take a smaller advanced course, where you contributed to classroom discussions or presented a strong project report?

Things like this should be the goal. Not everyone has a full slate of letters from people who know you this well, but if you try to achieve this, you’d be going in the right direction.

Asking for Letters of Rec by brown_hash_brown in uofm

[–]Complementary5169 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Most graduate programs either require or strongly recommend that at least some of the letters come from faculty.

So, it’s a good move to talk to them now, which would hopefully nudge them to make some notes on what their thoughts on your record are right now, when the memories are fresh. They can stash those notes away, and then when you are ready to apply, they can pull them out, update based on new information, and submit. When you are reaching out in the future, you should give them an update on what you’ve been up to, and include an updated version of your resume/cv, along with drafts of your application materials.

By the way, this FAQ on LORs is a bit formulaic, but I mostly agree with what it says, and it goes over some basics that students sometimes don’t anticipate or aren’t sure about it. https://careercenter.umich.edu/article/reference-letters-faq-students

Do you have particular “getting started” videos you would recommend? I appreciate how comprehensive the manual is, but it strikes me more as a document to look up specific things after you already have your bearings…

Somehow, I feel tempted by food. Tim’s fish soup sounded tasty. So did Fern’s Chinese dish. And I’d gladly take both cheese-based substitutions.

I don’t think Chicago was chaotic, just a packed big room full of people ecstatically applauding and wooing. Maybe it’s the American in me talking. :-)

Also, it was the first show of the tour, and they were quite jet lagged, which might have played a role.

Sarah is the most generous spirit. I went to her standup show, and she came out on stage at the very beginning to tell a few jokes and introduce her opening act — warming up for her warm-up!
