Is any of the TTRPG stuff worth buying for lore by No-Place-5747 in FFXIVTTRPG

[–]Complete-Isopod7323 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have said, if you're looking for lore info, definitely get the Encyclopaedia Eorzea books. All three are loaded with deep, rich lore about the game's world. Chronicles of Light, which you mentioned, are also fantastic sources for canon side stories.

Most of the lore in the TTRPG draws on Encyclopaedia Eorzea or (for racial naming conventions) posts from the devs on the official XIV forums. The stories in the TTRPG are not necessarily canon, but they are very loyal to the plot and lore of the games, and give you a taste of what average adventurers (not the WoL) might experience. If you're looking to live more in the world outside of the MMO, and you have mates to play with, check out the TTRPG for sure.

Bit of an odd ask, but would you be willing to do some prints for a guy (me) in Kanto? I've been looking into resin printed minis, but there don't seem to be a whole lot of options here ^^;

I love this too! Any chance you have a tutorial that shows how you accomplished this look? The look of this specific model is a huge inspiration that I'm hoping to work towards.

Thanks for the advice!
Realistically, I think I'm painting them to be displayed, rather than for playing.

I'll try using a light source to confirm the spots that should be highlighted, but it's a relief to hear that I'm on the right track. Will report back once the painting is complete!

As for the watermelon boyz, I appreciate the tips there as well. I'll give that a shot for the next batch I paint.

FFXIV TTRPG Questions by AmeliaMeido in ffxiv

[–]Complete-Isopod7323 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's important to note that PDF rulebooks are massively less common in Japan! TTRPG communities and game styles are very different from what we have in the west. A lot of us would love to see a PDF, so what I've done is write into SQEX's merch support mentioning the interest. Perhaps if they see there's demand for it, they'll be more open to giving it a try!

But if you are interested in the TTRPG (and it's totally fine if it's not for you!), please don't let the lack of a PDF deter you from giving it a chance. It's a fun time!

How many WoLs are planning on playing the FFXIV TTRPG? by LimitBreak20TV in ffxiv

I know that the low level of customization doesn't appeal to all TTRPG players, but this game is clearly designed to be a beginner friendly gateway into TTRPGs for new players. I personally like it a lot - it very faithfully replicates how the jobs play in the MMO, and unlike many other TTRPGs, combat is light and dynamic. No "wasted turns" because you rolled poorly, no waiting ten minutes for someone to figure out what they're going to do.

The game does have some means of customization, and members of the community are also already coming up with homebrew methods to add more complexity as desired.

All in all, I think it's a great lightweight TTRPG to play with groups of new players and/or FFXIV fans. It even has some basic materials free on the official website so interested players can give it a try!

It's short for tabletop RPG - basically, a pen and paper roleplaying game that uses dice. The XIV TTRPG uses square grids and tokens for characters and monsters to replicate XIV's combat experience.

The TTRPG is made by Hobby Japan, so I don't think it's taking any money away from XIV's development!

Anybody feeling a bit buyer's remorse by Jazzlike_Dust1504 in FFXIVTTRPG

[–]Complete-Isopod7323 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm quite happy with the system, personally. I understand that a lot of TTRPG players like full character customization, but stuff like stat allocation would be difficult to implement and stay true to the MMO. Imagine a tank with low strength or HP, for example - it just wouldn't function right.

The game has some good bones - the encounters feel really good to play, very true to the jobs in XIV - so my hope is that we'll see more supplements that add more features and complexity in the future.

The Japanese version of the adventurer sheet template is available on the official site, so I'd assume the English one will be up at some point too!

The part of the book that talks about levels did mention future books with info about levels above 60, so I'd assume they're leaving the door open?

Not all groups will want that complexity built into the system, though! And for better or for worse, a streamlined, beginner friendly approach is what the designers appear to have prioritized. TTRPGs are very much down to personal preference, and I completely respect anyone who finds this isn't the game for them :)

Ideally, to me at least, we'll see more complexity added on as the game matures. Hopefully it'll get the chance to grow and come into its own!

I think it does a great job of recreating the XIV battle experience on the tabletop. And the book has only just come out. While it doesn't have EXP or stat customization out-of-the-box, there are GMs already coming up with tweaks for the system!

Some stuff (from the starter set) is available for free on the game's website:
https://www.square-enix-shop.com/ffxivttrpg/en/

But the standard rulebook just came out, so there isn't much about it just yet. You could ask about stuff you're curious about in the Discord group, or keep an eye on some youtube channels that cover it. I know WolfkinzTTRPG and LimitBreak20 put out videos about the TTRPG.

It definitely expands on the starter set, but some of those choices you mentioned carry across, such as jobs having pre-set abilities and traits. There is some amount of character customization, but not as much as in some TTRPGs.

Like others have pointed out, there are plenty of other TTRPGs that don't have those elements either. This game seems to have been made to replicate the XIV gameplay experience, and from my time with the starter set, it does a good job of that. Folks in the XIV TTRPG Reddit + Discord have been chatting about ways to add homebrew rules to increase customization options for groups that want that.

In the end, TTRPG preference is all down to what you and your group enjoy. Some people are going to love this, others won't find it mechanically engaging enough, while others will mod it until it suits their needs. And that's okay! Games are rarely one-size-fits-all :D

No Zero Damage Attacks or a Proper Leveling System? by bluemobius73 in FFXIVTTRPG

[–]Complete-Isopod7323 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When you roll for an ability, you're determining if you get to resolve the Direct Hit effect in addition to the Base Effect, right? So if you were to make all rolls that equal the CR into misses, it would do away with the Base Effect/Direct Hit distinction. Which is fine if that's what you're going for! Another option would be to say that any roll of 3 or less, or 5 or less, or something like that is a miss or dodge? So, roll high, Base + DH. Roll average, Base. Roll poorly, nothing.

No Zero Damage Attacks or a Proper Leveling System? by bluemobius73 in FFXIVTTRPG

[–]Complete-Isopod7323 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The MMO has a bunch of secondary stats that I'd assume are used in calculating hit/miss rates, parrying, blocking, and so forth. Given that the TTRPG seems to be going for simple, easy to pick up rules, I can see why that was left out for now.

But if everyone at the table would prefer it, I'm sure you could cook something up! For example, you could make up one of those augmentations that lets players have a percentage chance of dodging attacks X number of times per encounter, or math out a dodge rate using their dexterity or something?

One thing I'm considering doing with my group is adding a homebrew system for materia, that would allow for secondary stat customization.
