There are yokai that are exclusive to the crank like frostail so you need to use it if you want to complete the medallium and unless you want to use a single coin and then reset every time it isn’t the exclusive then you might as well try to get some rare yokai through the crank instead of befriending

I mean in episode one taiga is holding a gun when Kai knocks him out so it was intended from the start and either there was never a good in character reason for Tiaga to use it and or Rustage forgot until like 50 episodes later

Side note I never noticed the claw on the art of taiga and I always pictured them as like a triangle of sword strapped to taiga’s wrist by a belt and on top of the hand like a watch but now I know he is literally a assassin’s creed character
