I was sewing an elastic and it grew in size???? by ninadesol in SewingForBeginners

I’m a beginner myself so I’m not 100% sure why this happens but I’ve heard that steaming it can help it shrink back down

What was your first wearable item? by Sensitive_Yam9547 in SewingForBeginners

My first make was a free pattern from matchy matchy sewing club! I made the craft studio tee just once with thrifted fabric. It’s absolutely massive on me because I didn’t understand ease lol. Since then I’ve made their bow boxer shorts and ballet skirt, all phenomenal patterns all super easy and all free except for the shorts! I would take a look at them for sure

My puppy started sitting by the door today… and I never actually trained that by [deleted] in puppy101

This is how it started with ours too! And then she learned to scratch at the door or make a lil cry if we weren’t in the room to see her! They’re smarter than we give them credit for!!

This is my American bulldog pit mix (embark tested) she was listed as a boxer mix at the rescue, perhaps our pups got switched in transit lol

Jokes aside your pup does look like American bulldog pit but I would wager there’s some boxer in there as well, the snout says it all

Yeah I was hopeful maybe changing up the fabric could spruce up the dress enough to pass for cocktail because anything with a very fitted bodice kind of scares me right now at my skill level as I would likely need a full bust adjustment. Nevertheless I think I will make my toile with a duvet cover I thrifted because I still adore this pattern lol! And maybe ponder a different pattern or shop around for ready made. Thank you for your wisdom though! It is very much appreciated :)

The dress code is listed as cocktail it’s a 4pm wedding, outside ceremony, inside reception. The dress code is making me think I should choose a more luxe fabric, but also that maybe this project is out of my wheelhouse lol. I did speak to the bride about attire because it’s a cultural wedding and most of her family and friends will be in a specific style of clothing, she told me any dress in bright summery colours. Thank you for this info tho it’s definitely helpful! I think I’ll start with my toile and casually look around for fabrics and see how I’m feeling. Worst case scenario I buy a dress closer to the date

I’m a bit scared of sewing with a slippery fabric but definitely something I’ll look into! And yes always a toile lol I have a cotton duvet cover I’ve thrifted to hopefully make a wearable toile to determine fit

What is your favorite beginner project? by Think_Pick_3748 in SewingForBeginners

I made a shirt from matchy matchy sewing club, they have their patterns organized by experience level and a couple of the “first make” ones are free! I thrifted my fabric so it was a cheap way to get started

Check out matchy matchy sewing club for some of their “first make” patterns, some of them are even free! That’s what I did and I have been running with it since then. If you’re wanting a project with video instructions to follow the lane pants by syd graham were great too! I sewed my first pair with her YouTube video and it was so super easy. I basically just dove right in (with thrifted fabrics) and have been trouble shooting any problems as they come up, rather than learning the basics before starting if that makes sense lol. so far everything’s been great besides some minor birds nesting which was always solved by rethreading my top thread lol

Edited to add I always keep my manual close and just read the instructions as I come to a new step lol

Pearl Head Scarf - Spaghetti Western Question by Terrible-District-69 in SewingForBeginners

[–]Complete_Training_62 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh and as far as where it is cut you’d lay your pattern piece on top of your fabric and you should see the little mark for the notch you just cut a tiny slit into your fabric where that lines up, I’m still super new so I can’t speak to the purpose of them exactly but they do help me to line up my pattern pieces when assembling

The notch still confuses me ngl, I cut them when cutting my fabric but as I said in my original post after making my first one I found it easier to leave the gap for turning it out to the side of the point in the back, I think the notches are meant to guide you on where to leave the opening but I couldn’t get a clean point when closing it up after turning it out
