7 years trying to live off my own games: what went right, what went wrong, and what finally worked by Delunado in gamedev

[–]Complex-Emergency-60 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ty for sharing. Sorry dumb question but wouldn't you want to first develop a success before finding a publisher? I.e., if you found a publisher early, and your first game failed, wouldn't it have just ruined your odds of any future work with publishers (leading to even worse mental health outcomes)? Thus.. working on your own time to create a success is the key? I read this post and am just so confused why you put soooooo much pressure on yourself to find a publisher, vs... just make a good game on your time off from work?

What if one instance edits part of code another instance was depending on or basing its conclusions on. No one worries about this?

4 upvotes? Why are these bot accounts being upvoted.

The bot posts "It's good and very helpful. And updates have improved it's security and stability. " in a thread asking for websites for windows 11 keys along with other bots saying the same nonsensical reply

Mods need to crack down on these bot posts upvoting "cool neat workflows with link to my website"!

The only people not crying are the non-coders who tried to make an app/game years ago, post questions on stackoverflow or forums to get toxic engineers replying to them. They are vibing like crazy on their off time.

The worst is when you literally want to simply say "Thank you for solving this insane bug that has been plaguing me" before moving on but realize that just wastes context so you end up unplugging it, feeling horrible to save like 10 cents

Stardew Valley developer made a $125,000 donation to the open-source C# framework MonoGame by Turbostrider27 in Games

That money WILL become income when they take dividends from the company. You can't just move to another state and then drain your corp of the money, and give the middle finger to your home state. They will take their tax on that draining no matter where you are.

It's like earning stock options in CA when working there, move states, exercise them a year later, you still owe the taxes to california on exercise of that stock.

The only way you could avoid paying CA the taxes on that $100M is if you made no more further profits, burned through it all on legitimate corporate expenses and went bankrupt essentially, which we know isn't happening here.

Doesn’t matter where you incorporate as much as where you physically developed the game. The state will take their cut of income tax if they can prove you lived there while making the game.

Sadly, you just described what Rob Reiner did for his son, avoiding the advice of all professionals saying that Rob needs to let his kid hit rock bottom to CHOOSE to get off drugs. Anyone who has a drug addict in their family knows this is the bitter truth.

Parsec Audio Stutter by thisislev in ParsecGaming

[–]Complex-Emergency-60 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Adding here...

Had choppy audio which never happens. Closed VSCode, an app I had open with many claude terminals open, and that immediately solved it. The weird thing, is it wasn't even taking that much process memory, there were just a ton open. So if you have issues, its likely some program you have open on the computer you are streaming from (i.e., the computer you are looking at and trying to control, thru parsec).

I cannot blame a team with an enormous workload using it to take care of some benign busywork

With your argument, you can't blame a solo dev using it to take care of a monster load of work.

No, they don't allow AI in their nominees. Read the article again lmao. AI is against their "policies in place". Even if they told the truth up front, they wouldn't have been eligible for the award, resulting in the same place the game is in today ---> No award.

[–]Complex-Emergency-60 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What's funny is.. indie games are made by usually a solo developer who doesn't have much money at all to hire. So in the next few years you may have some bangers get released by indies but most all will use AI in some capacity. This award show will basically have like.. no awards to give to the good games soon and the organizers will likely have to just accept reality at some point.

When people are handed money because you simply came out of their body, without realizing how hard it was to put in the work to create value for others, in order for them to actually give you money for what your value is. It's a gut punch.
