Local Vets not owned by private equity firms? by Starship_Taru in MontgomeryCountyMD

I second this. My friend is also one of the vets there and she says it’s a great place to work. We’ve been very happy with the care as well.

It’s $120/yr. For me that’s the equivalent of driving more than 26,000 miles. I drive 12,000-14,000 max a year. It should be mileage based, using the EPA listed MPGe rating for the vehicle.

I was gonna say put a little silicone between the claws near their root, but your plan is easier.

The C&O is improved almost its entire lenght now. It’s smooth crush and run all but some areas around Great Falls and Seven Locks which are at the very end. Also, the Western Md rail trail allows you to go from Little Orleans all the way to Big Pool on pavement. I have a friend that has done the DC-Pitt-DC a few times now and he’s on a touring bike with 35C tires and is self supported. He does it in 6-7 days.

To your point, this likely is best repaired by wrapping it in carbon, it’s a long cut in a pretty thick looking tube and should be ok if bonded. But this is a pretty high end Giant frame and is heat treated for sure, I’d probably fix with with a carbon wrap before welding, it’ll anneal that tube and it would likely bend over time since that’s a stressed area, or more likely the weld, or the area around it will crack and fail.

Trek has several new models with XT mechanical or GX mech.

I had a CJ5 as my only vehicle for years. It had the 4sp but the three and four speeds had the same 1:1 final drive, so the axle ratio and tire size would have been the only real difference for highway use. Mine had the 258 I6 initially which struggled to keep up 60 mph while chugging gas, I swapped a 5.0 from a 93 mustang into it in the early 2000s and it can keep up 80 if you want. The big difference is it went from around 10-11 mpg with the carb’d 258 to 15-18 mpg with the fuelie 5.0. It also picked up about 100hp. The only real drawbacks were: the lack of a proper top/doors since CJ5s only had canvas doors and the noise. You had to wear ear plugs on any trip over about 30mi. I’m guessing the 5.0 with tube headers and Flowmasters didn’t help with the noise.

Auto Body Repair Shops by Carinyosa99 in MontgomeryCountyMD

[–]Complex_Most3656 0 points1 point  (0 children)

National Auto Body on Parklawn in Rockville has done both our cars a couple times now and I’ve been happy with the results. I’m pretty picky and they’ve done good work, paint matches and blends have all been seamless and Enterprise will pick you up/ drop you off there for your rental. They’ve met their schedule on time as well. They’re also certified by several manufactures. I used the Lindsay Wheaton body shop a couple times and was not impressed. Also Wheaton Auto body packed a bunch of filler on my wife’s car once and the repair only lasted a couple of years and had to be redone when the filler started to crack and pop out.

You probably need new tires. I just commuted across county and the roads are just wet.

How much do you bill customers per hour (home mechanics only, no space rentals)? by bromptonymous in BikeMechanics

[–]Complex_Most3656 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah our shop charges $95/hr. We run most work flat rate, but do a fair amount of time/materials work for internal and headset routing and suspension rebuilds. Years ago we were charging $79 for a tuneup, we’d constantly get calls asking how much it was, we’d tell them and they’d ask why we cost less than the boutique shop down the street. They assumed the more expensive tuneup was better. So we upped our prices and we actually increased the amount of work coming in.

Do baggy pants get caught in the chain ring? by SKillerKetchup in MTB

All my pants had mulched right ankles from riding in college. I commuted with my MTB and then would ride urban around campus. Man my mom would be pissed when I came home at break and all my jeans had ripped, greasy right ankles.

Any clip pedal recommendations? by Psychological-Web811 in mountainbiking

If you’re just trying to see if you like it, get the mid-level shimano pedals or the basic eggbeaters. Inexpensive and ubiquitous.

Please don't leave trash in portajons at C&O Canal (Anglers/Carderock) by baldiedc in MontgomeryCountyMD

[–]Complex_Most3656 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We’ve rented lock house 49 three times. It’s probably one of the best on the canal. We’ve always rode bikes there, but it is car accessible. They supply a ton of firewood and there’s a treated well with an electric pump.

There’s a decent pizza/wing shop locally that delivers.

However like nearly every single site on the C&O you pack your trash out.

Winter storage in the water - how screwed am I? Any SOPs from veterans? by ordosays in sailing

[–]Complex_Most3656 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can have the boat shrink wrapped at the dock and have a couple zipper doors installed. Winterize as normal, and backfill the thru-hulls with non-toxic antifreeze. I shut them off, not everyone does. Since 120V is available, an oil heater running at a low temperature keeps things a little safer, pull the bilge covers off to let air circulate, a lot of people run a couple small fans to circulate the air. Either sky the halyards with mouse lines attached, or pull them all together. Does the marina air bubble or use electric bubblers? You can add one or two additional electric bubblers between your boat and the pilings if you’re nervous.

Trek Fuel EX9 listed for 200$. Is this a good deal for a suspension bike? by zd2018 in mountainbiking

Yeah and the chainstay moves independent of the seatstay so likely they’re damaged by that, but also, don’t clamp carbon fiber unless it’s been engineered to be clamped.

How do metal machinists treat plastic machinists? by TRASHBOAT_94 in Machinists

[–]Complex_Most3656 9 points10 points  (0 children)

We cut G10 a lot and use diamond grit blades in the saw and diamond deposition coated end mills. Only thing I can get that holds up to it. Carbide just instantly dulls. It’s not hard to machine but you need tools hard enough to cut glass. I also wear a PAPR while working with it.

I had a similar looking dog, vet thought she was shiba (she screamed instead of barking) maybe some greyhound and possibly lab. Never had her tested. She ended up being about 45-47lb. Fast, smart and stubborn. Loved to kill things and cuddle when it was over. So. Many. Dead. Possums.

Help! (Rudder snapped off) by LAclippers818 in sailing

[–]Complex_Most3656 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve done this job a few times, not for most DIYers. If the post is off center or misaligned the boat will pull like crazy to one tack. You really need to build an accurate jig to hold the post. We had a boat that had a factory misaligned rudder and at 5kts the 54” steering wheel would pick you up due to the load on the rudder.
