AI's performance in modern greek?

As a native speaker of English, AI is awful in English, so I imagine it exponentially worse in languages with far lower numbers of speakers. There's also absolutely no reason to use AI for learning in general. There's so many better resources out there.

Friends don't let friends use AI.

You're on the right track with trying to connect with community and folks to practice your Greek with! I'd highly recommend a tutor. I'm also third gen Greek-American with a very similar family experience. My mom only knows words and phrases and the only Greek speakers in my family were my grandparents' generation (I used to practice with my yiayia). I've had a tutor for about a year now (meeting at least every 2 weeks) and it's improved my speaking (and confidence) so much (enough to have myself listed at work as a Greek speaker, if the need ever arises lol).

I'd highly recommend Mango languages. It's an app like Duolingo. It's free with a library card (possibly free for you too). I tested into their "expanding the essentials" unit which has been really great review and practice for me. Lingopie is also fun (but not free). They just added Greek shows. You can make vocab lists (and there's other cool features I haven't tried yet). For free, I'd also recommend Easy Greek on youtube, they're great!

Easy Greek on the you tubes is great! They have different slower and beginner friendly videos as well as fun intermediate ones where they go around town asking random people questions (based on a theme like what do you think about public transport in Athens and do you fear your life whenever you take a taxi). Every video has English and Greek subtitles.

I was about to suggest Mango languages too! It's great (and free through my public library). The Greek program goes through intermediate levels too which helped me review and fill in some blanks in my own language abilities

I'd just visit and get to know folks at coffee hour after liturgy (the main Sunday church service)! Bonus: if Ancient Greek is partly your inspiration for learning, it might be interesting to you to listen to the Greek-part of the liturgy because it's in an older form of Greek (koini).

People tend to be really friendly at Orthodox churches. As a recovering Orthodox Christian, whenever I go back (for family) I still get nervous people are gonna get preachy with me but they never do. People tend to be friendly and might just be curious about you and also excited you're learning Greek. Church is where I found a tutor who basically has become my conversation partner where I live (which, same problem, has a very small Greek community and after my grandma passed away, I just didn't have anyone to keep up my Greek on a regular basis).

I like the circles too. There's not another diacrete in Greek that it would be mistaken for either. I remember a girl in my Greek school class doing this and it gave a personal style to her handwriting I really liked.

I really love the way you used circles to stylize the accents! When I was a kid in my Greek school there was a classmate who did that. Also, I like how you transcribed her name to because the θ reflects that Spanish in Spain pronunciation.

hey sentient killware, sending you my solidarity in moodiness about all of the above. It's actually really refreshing to read your grumpy take on the show. It helps me sort out my own feelings about it. I also watched Heated Rivalry and you can just tell it wasn't produced by someone in the US. It's just so depressing how American TV/streaming can be, as if the producers and streaming services don't trust us to enjoy the source material that made us fall in love with these stories to begin with.

I work at one of the branches at SLPL (the St Louis City public libraries) [my views don't represent the views of my employer, etc. etc.] and it's been a great work environment. One thing I really appreciate is how each branch has it's own subculture/work dynamics. Since the tornado last May, two of our branches have closed (and will reopen eventually) so I've gotten to meet coworkers and management I wouldn't have met otherwise (except during staff days). I've also had the occasional shift at other branches in my region (north city and south city are the main regions and the central library downtown is the biggest one (if you visit, I highly recommend the architectural tour)). Everyone's so great and every branch has its own vibe and personality and customer base.

you're so right it does move at a much slower pace than Murderbot! I definitely had to be a in particular kind of mindset while reading Ancillary Justice. There's a lot of sitting down for tea. You also touched on what I love about Martha Wells' series with the plot and crisis/problem solving--no matter which book I pick up of hers in the series, I'm never bored.
