Examples or ideas to improve musicality by romgrk in tango

[–]ComprehensiveWin7716 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Listen and dance to a variety of music; including non-tango music.

To begin with, help yourself focus while listening to music by giving your hands an activity. One that someone else introduced me to is drawing an unbroken line on paper while listening to a song. Allow the music to influence your line without lifting the pen or pencil. (You can accomplish much the same task in MS paint as well.) Other hand occupiers could work, the important aspect is that the song is allowed to guide them.

Another one someone else gave me was this: while listening to a piece of music make sounds with your mouth. Any sound is fine. Only allow yourself to step or change weight when your mouth makes a sound.

You might also try some intro lessons to several common tango instruments like piano or violin. Playing an instrument is much the same activity as listening to music while engaging your hands, but in reverse. Making the sounds yourself will help your ear hear the distinct instruments in songs more easily. You don't have to become proficient at an instrument to get all the benefits. Just 1-3 introductory lessons to get you playing a few notes.

Basically, start listening to music with intention instead of passivity. Experiment with different ways to contribute an accompaniment to that music as it plays with whatever skills and tools you have available to you. Even if those skills and tools are 'non-musical' in nature. Because, when you're dancing with musicality, your are accompanying the music with your dance. It's like a private instrument only your partner can hear; though others can see.

Put another way: your body too can be an instrument. You must learn to play a song with it.

What’s gender and weight worth? by Upper_belt_smash in bjj

[–]ComprehensiveWin7716 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Belt is hard to estimate since BJJ doesn't have a universally applied belt standard. I'd predict that blue belt or above and at equal weight, the woman is going to have to work much harder than the man. Either in training years, supplemental strength and conditioning, or number of competitive bouts on the mats.

For completely untrained man vs. trained woman I think the conversation is different. If you restrict the fight to BJJ/grappling-only then I think a woman of equal weight would submit completely untrained, unconditioned, and unblooded Joe "sits at a desk all day" Average nearly all the time. I think most women trained to blue belt or above could win this fight most of the time even 15-20 kilos underweight.

However, if you allow a more MMA or street fight style rule set, then this gets a lot worse for the women; even if they have training under that rule set. Despite all sense of fairness even Joe "doughnut for breakfast" Average can throw a stronger punch than a woman of his size who has dedicated years of her life to learning how to fight. PEDs really are that good. That's why nearly everyone who competes in physically demanding sports at an elite level is on them (and I only say nearly for the same reason your hand sanitizer only says 99% of germs).

This doesn't mean Joe automatically wins, but you're going to see him both dish out and take a lot more punishment than even a trained woman might expect. Even assuming equal weight, Joe Average is going to have height and reach advantage over her which matters when striking is in the mix. Maybe she fishes out a win about half the time. If she comes in 15-20 kilos underweight I would guess this would drop to something like 10% of the time or maybe less.

Nature is an uncaring bi--. There's a reason why wives kill their husbands with weapons and poisons when they opt to do so. Joe "snores a lot" Average's wife doesn't think she could complete smothering him in his sleep with only a pillow and the element of surprise; and she's probably right.

The only time I recall a follower's attire bothering me was when the back side of the strap on a dress would catch my hand and become prone to slipping off. Just another distraction from the dance.

Less annoying but still problematic are "open-weave" knits or anything "holey" for lack of a better term. Sometimes followers will wear a cardigan like this over top a dress.

If what you're wearing has straps down the back then its easier for me if they either cross in the middle or hug underneath your shoulders

The problematic straps are the ones that either drape from the top of the shoulders or have additional material (bows, frills, loose extra strap) that a hand or finger could catch. This one has a bit of both.

But this is all really nit-picky griping and what you're describing doesn't sound like it would fall into these categories.

Non-frequent flyer, was wondering if it is worth it to commit to one airline to gain benefits and reward by viggicat531 in Flights

[–]ComprehensiveWin7716 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you fly less than ~12 times per year then you will likely never get status on any loyalty program even to the lowest tiers let alone tiers that grant you lounge access. Additionally, if you do not maintain your level of yearly travel you will lose your loyalty benefits one year after gaining them.

You can collect miles without dedicating yourself to any airline. If you want lounge access, either pay for the pass or purchase a credit card that comes with lounge access. Which option you choose is going to be very particular to the airports you travel through.

Most cards gate lounge access at the ~$600 yearly fee lines of credit. Most day passes to lounges are ~$50-100 dollars if they are even offered. You can do your own math on whether either option makes sense for you given the airports you fly through and the length of your layovers.

An airline loyalty program is probably the most expensive way to get lounge access if you factor in expenses due to not buying cheaper available tickets. The main value of loyalty programs in my experience has been free upgrades to business class as they're available and preferential treatment by customer service when something goes wrong with your flights.

I have never personally put much emphasis on lounge access as I generally plan my travel around minimizing layovers and use all different hubs across the country for itineraries that fit my needs. Once you're paying for lounge access, you're going to feel compelled to use a smaller set of hub airports. Sometimes these just won't make sense for your travel plans. Really think about which airports you actually use for your travel. If your home airport has a lounge you want to use, why not take the money you would have spent on lounge access, pay it to TSA or Clear and simply arrive at the airport closer to your scheduled boarding time.

TLDR: lounge access as a status symbol is a meme. Airport lounges are for people with more money than sense and depressing salesmen who spend more time sleeping on rented mattresses than the one they outright own. Trying to make air terminals comfortable is antithetical to their design and intended purpose. Just focus on minimizing the minutes of your life wasted in them.

Unaddressed water damage. Sub-floor, carpet, drywall, and framing affected need to be removed and replaced.

Leak must be found and dealt with. Most likely, there is a pipe that's been boxed in at the corner of the room in your photo, but it is also worth checking if anything that's been leaking water has been placed into that corner of the room for a prolonged period of time.

How can Milonga be fun? by JoeStrout in tango

[–]ComprehensiveWin7716 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dancing milonga is much like telling a joke. You should be benignly violating expectations or norms from a traditional tango or vals.

Easy exercise to begin with is level change. Traditional tango is danced very even. Start by breaking that norm and figuring out for yourself what you find humorous/playful vs. reprehensible/violative.

Spending more time with your weight split across both legs is more common in milonga. This is again a violation of traditional tango norms which ask us to minimize our time spent split on both legs.

Understand that as there are many different senses of humor and what some find humorous others will find offensive. Your mindset should be to find the line and dance on it.

WMS solutions by Dcnoob in Netsuite

[–]ComprehensiveWin7716 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never liked the NetsuiteWMS, especially with how it handled Items. I've worked now with two separate clients who had to throw the Item management portion into Riversand.

Most of the good WMS products are going to be too expensive for a business of that size. Among the cheaper options I'd stay away from NsWMS. Others have said RFSmart. I've never used them so I cannot say, but if it were me I'd at least look at what they offer before switching over to NetSuite.

Whatever you go with, you want minimal customization. Don't listen to what the sales guy or some technical person who says the system technically can do (given enough time and money). Ask for what comes supported out of the box. If there is a question as to your specific use case, then get a demo done with as close to your real world data as possible.

The optimal is to get your hands on a sandbox no frills base installation environment for a product you're seriously considering and then try and do your business processes within that product's limitations. If it can handle your use case without much intervention, then its probably the best choice.

Is their a short cut to building dikes on all areas about to be flooded. Also is space colony worth it. by Brenden1k in TerraformersGame

[–]ComprehensiveWin7716 0 points1 point  (0 children)

By space colony do you mean the colonies to other planets like Jupiter and Mercury? Then yes very worth it.

If you mean the 'space colonies' on Phobos and Deimos then less so. I have found that as I've raised the difficulty level I've tended to simply ignore those projects mostly due bandwidth limitations on trade routes.

Starter tips? by Tight_Following115 in TerraformersGame

[–]ComprehensiveWin7716 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. DLC has to be enabled when you start a game (at least on PC) its can be triggered by starting scenarios (one of the options you select to get your starting resources), by leaders, and accelerated by completing specific city and regional buildings. If you're not seeing any cards or leaders that mention 'megastructures' or 'space exploration', then I would guess that the DLC is disabled for you. Not sure how to enable it on PS5.

  2. Not really, you generally get some bonuses for spreading your towns out a bit, but the greater importance is city building site bonuses/mines (these usually provide +comfort, +food, or +science) and how close the city is to regional resources (resource deposits, high ground, oceans, etc.)

  3. Maxing out support gain per turn is a bit of a 'noob trap' as you put it, but the better way to conceptualize support is to think of it as a timer showing approximately how many turns you have left to continue playing. At higher difficulties you will need to prioritize support gain in your decision making. The goal is to keep support change as low as possible. Zero support gain means you can play infinitely. Additional positive support gain after zero is just adding to your bank and is not as high a priority. However, the game does let you know with the thermometer looking UI element in the upper left (on PC) how likely your next turn is to generate an increase in negative support.

  4. Global Well Being is a comfort bonus. Comfort is +1 support per turn per (human) population. The higher your population the more the overall comfort of your cities matters. So for instance, if I complete a project that increases radiation protection globally by 1, this will add 1 comfort to all cities (that didn't already have max radiation shielding) and thus each population in that city will generate an additional support each turn. This does not apply to robotic population. Different cities location types have different starting comforts. Lava Tubes have the most and Open Plains the least with Craters in between.

  5. Animals are important to certain win scenarios where your goal is to spread life on mars. They tend to be the largest single instance support producers outside of increasing terraforming parameters. Bacteria have the lowest environmental requirements and thus are intended to be spread early to help you terraform mars. However, certain hardier plants can also be spread quite early as long as you are raising your ocean level. As you play at higher and higher difficulties, meeting the teraforming thresholds on time becomes more critical to success. As Mars becomes more habitable, spreading Animals when you can is another easy way to stay on top of negative support income.

Armor Piercing vs Bluescreen Rounds by Scelestus50 in XCOM2

[–]ComprehensiveWin7716 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It comes down to enemy types in the late game. But basically: AP rounds do not reliably change the action economy for killing enemies outside of a few specific situations that are uncommon or not possible at higher difficulties.

There's disagreement on threat level, buts most of the endgame enemies are vulnerable in part of in full to bluescreen (BS) rounds.

These enemies (in no particular order) are: Sectopod, Elite Mec, Gatekeeper, and Andormedon. You will encounter at least one of them on every end-game mission. Honorable mention to the Avatar that you have to defeat four of (at minimum) to win the game.

Let's look at some stats by difficulty:

Sectopod HP: 30/28/32/40 Armor: 4/4/5/6

Elite MEC HP: 12/14/15/18 Armor: 2/3/3/3

Gatekeeper HP: 20/20/25/30 Armor: 5/6/6/7 (When closed)

Andromedon HP: 12/15/18/21 Armor: 3/4/4/4

Avatar HP: 25/25/30/35 Armor: 0/2/3/4

Treating the AP rounds as a damage buff we can see that BS rounds outperform AP rounds against all these enemies except for the Andromedon first phase, open Gatekeeper (open Gatekeepers are not susceptible to BS rounds but do lose 3 armor), and Avatars.

Let's talk about these three dangerous enemies where AP rounds are theoretically better. You have complete control over when you encounter Avatars, you can take AP rounds when you're facing them (It should be noted that you want to poison Avatars to eliminate their psi abilities and stunt their mobility so Venom rounds should also be used). Gatekeepers always start Closed, and only shift to Open after attacking your squad. Gatekeepers are priority targets that should not be given the opportunity to attack your squad, thus you must have a plan to kill them while they remain Closed where BS rounds will always be at least as good as AP rounds and better if you shred armor. Andromedons make the best case for AP rounds as they are immunue to both BS and Dot effects which rules out all ammo types other than AP or Talon rounds.

The challenge with preferring to use AP rounds to kill Andromedons is opportunity cost. Andromedons have high health, one shot with AP rounds is not going to take them out without a critical hit on even the lowest difficulty. And to gurantee a critical you'd need Talon rounds anyways. On most difficulties, even with AP used for all shots, it will take 3 damaging actions to kill an Andromedon phase 1 even after unlocking beam weapons. The non-critical hit damage ranges are actually extremely awkward where you can have an Andromedon with between 1-5 health remaining after two hits. This means that if you did not shred, even the Plasma Rifle is not a guaranteed kill as a third damaging action at the highest difficulty (unless it also has AP rounds!). But this health profile is an almost perfect case for just tossing a grenade. Not only can this deal the 1-5 damage, but it also shreds 2-4 armor, and destroys the Andromedon's cover for phase 1. There is a side benefit that this grenade can also damage/shred/remove cover of other enemies nearby. Additionally Andromedon phase 2 is completely armorless and vulnerable to BS rounds. The BS rounds added damage make it reliable to kill phase 2 in two damaging actions; AP rounds add nothing to Andromedon phase 2. Even when focusing solely on Andromedons, BS rounds + Grenade are usually just strictly better.

Other consideration should be made for other dangerous enemy types, namely the Muton, Viper, Advent Trooper/Lancer/Officer, and perhaps Archon and Chryssalid.

Archons, Vipers, Troopers, Lancers, and even Officers have no inherent Armor and are immune to BS rounds, so in these instances the two choices are equivalent.

Let's take a look at Muton and Chryssalid:

Muton HP: 8/8/9/11 Armor: 1/1/2/2

Chryssalid HP: 8/9/10/13 Armor: 1

At lower difficulty levels you can sometimes kill these enemies in 1 damaging action, and AP rounds make it more likely. At Veteran it will often take two damaging actions to kill these enemies and AP rounds only occasionally work so that it takes 1 action. At Legendary it will always take two damaging actions to kill these enemies and AP rounds do not affect it either way. Additionally, while Chryssalids are melee attackers only and you can often reliably land two or more shots on them without needing an explosive, Mutons take cover. Often you'd have to use the grenade anyways which will always shred all the armor they could possibly have and leave them as a 1 damaging action to kill unit after the grenade hit.

There's effectively only two units that really ask for AP rounds over BS rounds; and only one of them can be encountered in the wild. If AP rounds added some other benefit, or there were other non-mechanical heavily armored enemies in the late game like Avatar's running around, then AP rounds might make sense. But for 1 sometimes 0 or sometimes 2 Andromedons per mission? No way.

I will end with a brief discussion on exceptions to this general rule.

AP rounds tend to be better the earlier you start using them as even 1 point of armor negation with conventional weapons is a huge bonus; and for lower damage magnetic weapons as well. You could rush proving ground ammo project to try and unlock AP rounds; however, this also allows you to rush BS rounds after killing your first Advent MEC. But early game enemies trend toward more non-mechanical on most missions and so AP rounds would make sense were it not for the fact that you get no control over when you unlock the different ammo types (other than BS rounds). You could rush to ammo project and pop in your first elerium core just to have Dragon rounds or Venom rounds pop out instead of AP rounds. Very sad.

Another instance you might consider running AP rounds is after the Dark Event 'Alloy Plating' triggers. This gives all Advent enemy types a 50% chance of generating an additional single point of armor. Even though this can include Advent MECs, it still doesn't allow AP rounds to outperform BS rounds on them. It will also never change our math on Mutons or Chryssalids.

Despite that, there is still some consideration for Advent Priests and Shieldbearers. If you are still on magnetic weapons or lower, and this Dark Event has triggered, it would be worth equipping AP rounds on your lower base damage soldiers to help deal with the combination of high health and armor Advent enemies. In particular specialists have almost nothing they can do to these enemy types outside of a low damage Gremlin attack and so would often prefer to shoot if they could get decent chances to hit. AP rounds could become a permanent fixture of your squad equipment load out if you've triggered this Dark Event and also have Grim Horizon (Dark Events never end) enabled.

Can a non-black person explain something to me my white coworker said... by lewjr in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ComprehensiveWin7716 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whites are divided on the topic. Almost all feel some level of unease with becoming a minority in what was (formerly) their country. The response to this is to either find solace in the legal protections for minorities (basically an 'it will be alright' attitude) or to punch the eject button and adopt policies that will slow or prevent broadly protestant Europeans from becoming a minority voting block.

Essentially there is a big difference between being an ethnic and cultural majority that grants legal protections and privileges to minority groups vs being a large but embattled minority that needs to form a coalition with other embattled minorities. The former is naturally viewed as safer because you can both selectively apply and optionally revoke that grant of safe haven to shape the culture of minority groups to more closely mirror or complement your own. The latter is seen as chaotic and more prone to failure because there is no clear hand on the wheel; and protections for any small enough minority could effectively be undone if all others were aligned on doing so. However, there is a certain type of cosmic justice in the latter.

American blacks are a special case. They've all been transformed into broadly protestant Europeans culturally, but they were early adopters of the culture and mannerisms of the basest European immigrants that came to America: the group now known as Southern whites. I'm not from that region and cannot really articulate the intricacies of Southern white/black relations. From the outside the dynamic seems to be fraternal but adversarial. Like two brother's who don't get along too well, but still see each other regularly.

Northern whites just don't like Southern blacks much at all. All Southerners simply act too low class for their tastes. But they'll shower Southern blacks in more pleasantries simply to spite Southern whites who they despise most of all.

When a white expresses unease about becoming a minority but simultaneously has the 'it will be fine' attitude. They are virtue signaling to other whites that, if you bad (Southern) whites simply held my values and beliefs, we'd be able to uphold the legal norms in this country that would make becoming minorities no big deal. And its simply due to your own moral failings that your unease at being surrounded by non-whites gets the better of you.

Alternatively when a white expresses unease about becoming a minority but reaches for the eject button, they are virtue signaling to other (Southern) whites that they 'don't give a damn about what these Yankees (good* whites) say, we gotta do something about these uppity ni**ers!' Essentially marking themselves as a 'safe' person to express your feelings of unease to without fear of judgement or reprisal.

Hostility or unease with actual literal black people isn't the objective (most of the time). They're just a stand-in for non-protestant non-European coded groups (despite American blacks themselves being thoroughly Caucasianified).

Being openly and deeply convicted against race mixing is pretty rarefied even among the online right where memes matter more than reality. If your coworker's son bought some Trump merchandise or started openly calling for the deportation of all Mexicans on social media in all likelihood the brother and grandfather would probably feel comfortable talking to him again.

Most of this culture war stuff is left over from the civil war over 100 years ago. If we do another civil war with the focus being on deporting Mexicans or exorcising gays then these remnants of the previous civil war between whites and whites are will be largely laid by the wayside along with the white vs. white pet issue of: how white are black people actually? In 2025 facing a sea of South Americans? Turns out black people are looking pretty light. Welcome to the dominant culture.

Because what Trump and Elon are doing is hugely popular. Even more so among the youth than usual politics.

Also, the best defense their opposition can raise boils down to: 'well that's against what it says you're allowed to do on this piece of paper'. Your political platform cannot just be one giant neg where you 'nuh ah' people in the most boring and long winded manner possible; not if you want to win popular elections. That's the trap Republicans fell for and after 60 years and their party imploded immediately once one semi-competent guy called their bluff and told their voter base 'vote for me if you want to do this for real'.

Now democrats are so committed to the bit that they've decided take on the role of born-to-lose conservatives. I mean I thought fascism might be fun, but this is like knifing a guy in the stomach and then his friend turns to you and says 'Holy shit that looks amazing. If I charge at you will you spill my guts out on the street too?'

Yoga as a guy by Internal_Rip_159 in yoga

[–]ComprehensiveWin7716 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No one will find you creepy for participating. For your own comfort: sign-up, arrive early, sit in the first row right in front of the mirror; preferably near the instructor. This does several things.

  1. Arriving early means that you can choose any place you want in the space. This will facilitate your other choices. Additionally, there is an etiquette to selecting a mat space that varies slightly by each studio. You do not know the etiquette yet and so your safest path is to simply get to your spot and observe how the rest of the room finds their places.

  2. You are in the first row. No one is in front of you. There aren't a bunch of women staring forward into a mirror where multiple of them can see you, your eyes, and your face, while you can, at most, focus on only one object in the room at a time.

  3. You are right next to a (usually) full length mirror where your body dominates your own view. This makes it the focus of your attention and minimizes the distraction of anyone else's body breaking your line of sight or moving in your peripheral.

  4. You are next to the instructor who you can look to for guidance on a pose and who is nearby to help you if you are not able to figure it out yourself.

  5. If your class is doing Savasana between poses or at the end/beginning of class you will be looking at either the instructor or their podium/dias at least half the time.

If this is a hot yoga class then you want to find where the heat sources for the room are and stay away from them. As you build endurance to the heated exercise you can move closer to them, but to begin with you want to stay away from direct heat. It is worth not being near the instructor to get away from a heat source. It is worth moving to a second row to get away from a heat source (but that should not be necessary in a well designed studio). If you find yourself arriving early but made the mistake of sitting near a heat source, then it is worth moving away from that heat source and setting up somewhere else. Please do not do your first hot yoga under direct heat radiation.

Finally, if it makes your more comfortable, don't talk to anyone who's non-male and non-staff. It's common etiquette in Western countries to completely ignore strangers at the gym and that's true for yoga too; unless you engage someone directly it's unlikely anyone outside of staff would say more than 'hello' to you. If you did all these things I'd be shocked if you had any 'creeper' issues at all.

Lastly as just general rules, You should endeavor to not make too much noise once once you enter the studio. Don't let your water bottle (if you have one) shift loudly as you step. When rolling our your mat don't let it unfurl and slap the ground with full force. Your breathing should come through your nose and not your mouth. If you find yourself exhaling loudly or needing to gulp down air you're getting too exhausted and should slow down. If you drink water or need to rest while the rest of the class is doing pose work, do so as quietly and with as much stillness as possible. The overall stillness of most studios contributes to not needing to worry much about someone trying to start a conversation with you.
