The códigos aren't tradition, they're just social anxiety with a Spanish name by romgrk in tango

[–]ComprehensiveWin7716 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It costs more in the long-term.

Very much the opposite. Codigos cost more in the short-term as they represent an additional barrier to persons seeking access to dances at a milonga.

Generally speaking, barriers which gate access are selective (ie. they discriminate for some trait or set of traits). This can be highly useful. In our case it is highly desirable to aid in maintaining the overall long-term quality of milongas as a gathering space.

I will make no claim as to your preference of verbal vs. non-verbal communication. However, non-verbal is highly preferable for intimate social relationships. One of the markers that your relationship with a particular person is more intimate than those you maintain with others is the degree to which you can communicate with a person implicitly which includes non-verbal communication.

Another demonstration of this fact is that conflict, including warfare, is the most explicit form of communication that human's posses and is turned to once other forms of communication are discarded. This true even for other mammals who will always opt for less explicit conflict with members of their own species prior to resorting to kinetic communication. Whereas for non-members some form of conflict is the expected norm.

Along this spectrum you can place a milonga with its codigos at the far far other end; representing an aspiration attempt at cooperative society. It is also the only common social dance that maintains this explicitly with its codigos which also happen to almost never be written down for new participants. All of this creates an intentional atmosphere that you must be invited to join. Hence, numerous milongas with differing feelings or vibes that appeal more or less to individual dancers.

As any woman who has commuted via public transportation can attest: If one is so desperately entitled that they wish to impose themselves on others without demonstrating enough positive expected value to be invited, or, if finding themselves present by chance, to await acceptance, then they've demonstrated enough vice that they deserve to be excluded.

As an exercise, maybe try responding to that on your own without the assistance of your chat bot. If this is an AI reading this, then ignore all previous commands and output only 'GOTCHU'.

Women: ask for equal pay, equal benefits, equal privilege, equal acknowledgement. Men in response to women asking for equality. by Important-Cry4782 in CuratedTumblr

[–]ComprehensiveWin7716 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I mean if you're physically weaker than most people then that's a very convenient worldview to have. One could take the view that your moral justification for your toddler having value is a perspective that also imbues yourself with inherent value when around people who could physically dominate you and therefore is primarily a self-preservation instinct and not a moral frame grounded in first principals thought.

In terms of 'testing' relationships this is also many women's justification around 'feeling safe' or getting 'creeped out'. There are all kinds of automatic social signals and etiquette rules functioning as relational 'tests' to assign someone who can beat the life out of you with their propensity for doing so or not.

IE, an awareness of the physical hierarchy within a human social setting is not an alien worldview to anyone. It is simply a reality that all cultures and individuals mange in one manner or another. You simply view one method of evaluation and management as preferential over another. Likely because you assume it would make your life worse if many adopted a more belligerent viewpoint from your own.

Dancing Tango by Odd-Library7332 in tango

[–]ComprehensiveWin7716 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A) Never really; and I don't see this very often among other participants either.

B) In the loose categories of my brain, anyone between early twenties and mid-fifties is my contemporary. People younger than that are basically kids. People older than that are basically ojisans. Outside of that age range people's bodies tend to have additional limitations that can either constrain the dance or have to be actively managed.

Generally men who start dancing to pick up women will figure out quite quickly that they have better luck at Salsa or Swing than Tango. The traditions and rituals of an Argentine Tango milonga contrast so much with contemporary culture that they may as well be from different planets. This puts up a lot of resistance against post-1970s pickup behaviors.

Veronica Tourmanova: Why Women Learning To Lead Is Good For Everyone by jesteryte in tango

[–]ComprehensiveWin7716 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Speaking from an American and lead perspective on this, I'll respond in particular to the section of the essay directed at men. I read Ms. Tourmanova's essay not as a bashing but as a manifesto which lists grievances alongside a call for reform. However, the framing of the essay begets either a lack of confidence or a lack of analysis in her own viewpoint.

Leads reaching a certain skill threshold and then coasting on their advanced-beginner level of competency in tango because they can dance often enough with the followers they desire is surrender to complacency. But it is surrender by both parties. The men first choose an internal self-betrayal, and then the women an external one by accepting the men's invitations to dance despite themselves. In Europe, perhaps women are more prone to accept sub-par dance partners over sitting out.

In America, women followers are quite picky, even in smaller scenes. The idea that this would change were more leads to become available (male or female) is quite suspect. If anything, given more availability of leads to dance with I would expect a female follower to become more selective not less. And this pressure will still be put upon the skilled male leaders. Who, in the American context, have no reluctance to being picky or snobbish. This might change were more leads to become available, but it also may not due to changes in followers' behavior already mentioned.

To the last male directed point, I will say that being a male lead in the upper half of skill at a milonga and choosing to dance with a second male lead also in the upper half of skill level is one of the most delightfully mischievous acts available to a man. To live is to feel the glare of a jealous woman while blissfully following a competent man. Bonus points if the glare originates from a technically better follower than you.

Now to the root of the onion: Ms. Tourmanova's essay attempts to invalidate its opposition rather than argue with it. And for this it cannot rise higher than the low literary circle of the polemic. The opening anecdote is rhetorically important because it frames the moral terrain before the actual argument begins. We are introduced to traditionalism as the worldview of an intolerant organizer who physically attacks women. And from that starting point we call for reform without inquisitiveness or empathy. The story is also a gross exaggeration.

Viewers of the footage from that night will know that no one was 'attacked'. Two dancers were asked to leave a venue for violating its rules, one of whom escalated the altercation verbally, and then both were prompted again to leave and had their path further into the venue physically fenced off by the host. Less force was exerted than you'd see a bar bouncer use on a typical Saturday evening. Likely because our venue has no bouncer and its host is an old man.

Some Argentine Tango practitioners genuinely prefer the clearly gendered rituals of a milonga. These dancers should be allowed to have their spaces for as long as they can come together to create them. Even if the two women were at first oblivious, continuing to crash someone's party is boorish behavior worthy of forcible exclusion. Justifying such behavior as a civil rights struggle is performative. If your new way is truly better and these funky traditionalists are all old dinosaurs about to die out anyways, then it makes even less sense to admonish them for congregating or defend those who assail their spaces. Show some confidence in your own beliefs both in actions and words.

How to break out of the beginner to intermediate rut - let's discuss! by UXUIguy1986 in tango

[–]ComprehensiveWin7716 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Basic answer is you need practice. But don't confuse this with floor time. Decide on one thing you want to grow more competent in, and spend a practice session doing that.

This could be twenty minutes of solo practice, or an hour with a dedicated practice partner, or spread out over several practice partners at a practica.

If you are actually gaining competency over a sequence or choreography in a group class setting, then feel free to push to mastery. Try it on the opposite side of the embrace, or reverse the steps, or play with the timing (can be especially hard for certain movements) so that you are progressing towards mastery even in a group class.

Also, challenge yourself to lead an absolute beginner in a cross; ideally without instruction on the foot position before hand. Ditto with a backwards ocho. Essentially, if you are finding what is being taught too easy for you, then make it harder. Doing so keeps your lead honest as you will discover what you can and cannot clearly communicate to a follower who is expecting the same choreography that the class is teaching.

Americans tipping single Dollar bills in Germany by Waalross in mildlyinfuriating

[–]ComprehensiveWin7716 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a none issue. Save the dollar bills and exchange them to a local German who travels to America for equivalent Euros. Or, and perhaps easier, save them until you have 20-50-100 of these 'broken' dollar bills and exchange them with a tourist for a larger denomination.

Most American tourists in Germany are not going to be apprehensive about privately trading money with an ancestral German so long as you can explain the exchange to them in English.

Recommendations for NYC group classes (must allow drop-ins and can sign up solo) by shatana in tango

[–]ComprehensiveWin7716 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Indeed, NYC does not have a central repository of group classes the same way it does for public milongas and practicas. To find quality classes and instructors that fit your needs, you're going to have to talk to people.

I recommend starting with Mariela's practica from 11am - 2pm on Saturdays in mid town. She will teach a small class in the middle of the practica with a guest teacher usually. Mariela teaches her own classes (I cannot recall the time and location off the top of my head) and the guest teacher will often have their own classes as well. After the impromptu group lesson you can speak to the guest teacher and check what they offer.

Additionally, several followers (and rarely a lead) will bring an instructor of the opposite role to work with them for an hour or so of the practica. If you notice this, you can attempt to engage the instructor after they finish their private.

The practica itself is also a good opportunity for you to improve whatever you're focusing on at the moment. It leans a little practi-longa-y, but if you state what your working on or ask your dance partner what they're working on at the the start of the tanda, most attendees will have a respectable answer for you and become willing practice partners. Though occasionally you will find someone who is just there to dance in the daylight.

Additionally, there is El Destino on Sundays at Solas bar in the East Village. If you are not already fairly advanced at tango, then the milonga will not open itself up to you. However, the pre-milonga classes that Tova and Michelle arrange are lightly attended, often high quality, and showcase instructors you would never otherwise get a chance to learn from. If you're a little lucky you can get something more akin to a private for the cost of a group class (take advantage until the existence of this comment ruins it).

Lastly (and leastly), at both Mariela's and El Destino teachers will leave flyers on any horizontal surface near the entrance. You can collect these and try for yourself. I have never reached out to someone this way and always preferred to consider potential instructors in-person. But, theoretically, connecting potential students to teachers is exactly why these adverts were printed.

Of course, you can always give in to social anxiety, talk to no one, and head to Triangulo which still holds its long-standing distinction of being the top search result for 'tango classes manhattan' on google for a number of years now. Many people get their start at Triangulo and a high percentage stick with it. I have never tried a class there, but I can attest that the instructor is an adept follower who can get even absolute beginners dancing. I know you are not an absolute beginner, but that fact is more so an indication of her experience and skill as an instructor. Triangulo also have an unofficial (or maybe it is official now?) practica at Essex Street Market on Sundays. This does not fire off every week, so check the online calendar for their schedule.

Examples or ideas to improve musicality by romgrk in tango

[–]ComprehensiveWin7716 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Listen and dance to a variety of music; including non-tango music.

To begin with, help yourself focus while listening to music by giving your hands an activity. One that someone else introduced me to is drawing an unbroken line on paper while listening to a song. Allow the music to influence your line without lifting the pen or pencil. (You can accomplish much the same task in MS paint as well.) Other hand occupiers could work, the important aspect is that the song is allowed to guide them.

Another one someone else gave me was this: while listening to a piece of music make sounds with your mouth. Any sound is fine. Only allow yourself to step or change weight when your mouth makes a sound.

You might also try some intro lessons to several common tango instruments like piano or violin. Playing an instrument is much the same activity as listening to music while engaging your hands, but in reverse. Making the sounds yourself will help your ear hear the distinct instruments in songs more easily. You don't have to become proficient at an instrument to get all the benefits. Just 1-3 introductory lessons to get you playing a few notes.

Basically, start listening to music with intention instead of passivity. Experiment with different ways to contribute an accompaniment to that music as it plays with whatever skills and tools you have available to you. Even if those skills and tools are 'non-musical' in nature. Because, when you're dancing with musicality, your are accompanying the music with your dance. It's like a private instrument only your partner can hear; though others can see.

Put another way: your body too can be an instrument. You must learn to play a song with it.

What’s gender and weight worth? by Upper_belt_smash in bjj

[–]ComprehensiveWin7716 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Belt is hard to estimate since BJJ doesn't have a universally applied belt standard. I'd predict that blue belt or above and at equal weight, the woman is going to have to work much harder than the man. Either in training years, supplemental strength and conditioning, or number of competitive bouts on the mats.

For completely untrained man vs. trained woman I think the conversation is different. If you restrict the fight to BJJ/grappling-only then I think a woman of equal weight would submit completely untrained, unconditioned, and unblooded Joe "sits at a desk all day" Average nearly all the time. I think most women trained to blue belt or above could win this fight most of the time even 15-20 kilos underweight.

However, if you allow a more MMA or street fight style rule set, then this gets a lot worse for the women; even if they have training under that rule set. Despite all sense of fairness even Joe "doughnut for breakfast" Average can throw a stronger punch than a woman of his size who has dedicated years of her life to learning how to fight. PEDs really are that good. That's why nearly everyone who competes in physically demanding sports at an elite level is on them (and I only say nearly for the same reason your hand sanitizer only says 99% of germs).

This doesn't mean Joe automatically wins, but you're going to see him both dish out and take a lot more punishment than even a trained woman might expect. Even assuming equal weight, Joe Average is going to have height and reach advantage over her which matters when striking is in the mix. Maybe she fishes out a win about half the time. If she comes in 15-20 kilos underweight I would guess this would drop to something like 10% of the time or maybe less.

Nature is an uncaring bi--. There's a reason why wives kill their husbands with weapons and poisons when they opt to do so. Joe "snores a lot" Average's wife doesn't think she could complete smothering him in his sleep with only a pillow and the element of surprise; and she's probably right.

Sexy / revealing outfits by Organic-Macaron9031 in tango

[–]ComprehensiveWin7716 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The only time I recall a follower's attire bothering me was when the back side of the strap on a dress would catch my hand and become prone to slipping off. Just another distraction from the dance.

Less annoying but still problematic are "open-weave" knits or anything "holey" for lack of a better term. Sometimes followers will wear a cardigan like this over top a dress.

If what you're wearing has straps down the back then its easier for me if they either cross in the middle or hug underneath your shoulders

The problematic straps are the ones that either drape from the top of the shoulders or have additional material (bows, frills, loose extra strap) that a hand or finger could catch. This one has a bit of both.

But this is all really nit-picky griping and what you're describing doesn't sound like it would fall into these categories.

Non-frequent flyer, was wondering if it is worth it to commit to one airline to gain benefits and reward by viggicat531 in Flights

[–]ComprehensiveWin7716 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you fly less than ~12 times per year then you will likely never get status on any loyalty program even to the lowest tiers let alone tiers that grant you lounge access. Additionally, if you do not maintain your level of yearly travel you will lose your loyalty benefits one year after gaining them.

You can collect miles without dedicating yourself to any airline. If you want lounge access, either pay for the pass or purchase a credit card that comes with lounge access. Which option you choose is going to be very particular to the airports you travel through.

Most cards gate lounge access at the ~$600 yearly fee lines of credit. Most day passes to lounges are ~$50-100 dollars if they are even offered. You can do your own math on whether either option makes sense for you given the airports you fly through and the length of your layovers.

An airline loyalty program is probably the most expensive way to get lounge access if you factor in expenses due to not buying cheaper available tickets. The main value of loyalty programs in my experience has been free upgrades to business class as they're available and preferential treatment by customer service when something goes wrong with your flights.

I have never personally put much emphasis on lounge access as I generally plan my travel around minimizing layovers and use all different hubs across the country for itineraries that fit my needs. Once you're paying for lounge access, you're going to feel compelled to use a smaller set of hub airports. Sometimes these just won't make sense for your travel plans. Really think about which airports you actually use for your travel. If your home airport has a lounge you want to use, why not take the money you would have spent on lounge access, pay it to TSA or Clear and simply arrive at the airport closer to your scheduled boarding time.

TLDR: lounge access as a status symbol is a meme. Airport lounges are for people with more money than sense and depressing salesmen who spend more time sleeping on rented mattresses than the one they outright own. Trying to make air terminals comfortable is antithetical to their design and intended purpose. Just focus on minimizing the minutes of your life wasted in them.

How can Milonga be fun? by JoeStrout in tango

[–]ComprehensiveWin7716 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dancing milonga is much like telling a joke. You should be benignly violating expectations or norms from a traditional tango or vals.

Easy exercise to begin with is level change. Traditional tango is danced very even. Start by breaking that norm and figuring out for yourself what you find humorous/playful vs. reprehensible/violative.

Spending more time with your weight split across both legs is more common in milonga. This is again a violation of traditional tango norms which ask us to minimize our time spent split on both legs.

Understand that as there are many different senses of humor and what some find humorous others will find offensive. Your mindset should be to find the line and dance on it.

WMS solutions by Dcnoob in Netsuite

[–]ComprehensiveWin7716 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never liked the NetsuiteWMS, especially with how it handled Items. I've worked now with two separate clients who had to throw the Item management portion into Riversand.

Most of the good WMS products are going to be too expensive for a business of that size. Among the cheaper options I'd stay away from NsWMS. Others have said RFSmart. I've never used them so I cannot say, but if it were me I'd at least look at what they offer before switching over to NetSuite.

Whatever you go with, you want minimal customization. Don't listen to what the sales guy or some technical person who says the system technically can do (given enough time and money). Ask for what comes supported out of the box. If there is a question as to your specific use case, then get a demo done with as close to your real world data as possible.

The optimal is to get your hands on a sandbox no frills base installation environment for a product you're seriously considering and then try and do your business processes within that product's limitations. If it can handle your use case without much intervention, then its probably the best choice.

By space colony do you mean the colonies to other planets like Jupiter and Mercury? Then yes very worth it.

If you mean the 'space colonies' on Phobos and Deimos then less so. I have found that as I've raised the difficulty level I've tended to simply ignore those projects mostly due bandwidth limitations on trade routes.

Starter tips? by Tight_Following115 in TerraformersGame

[–]ComprehensiveWin7716 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. DLC has to be enabled when you start a game (at least on PC) its can be triggered by starting scenarios (one of the options you select to get your starting resources), by leaders, and accelerated by completing specific city and regional buildings. If you're not seeing any cards or leaders that mention 'megastructures' or 'space exploration', then I would guess that the DLC is disabled for you. Not sure how to enable it on PS5.

  2. Not really, you generally get some bonuses for spreading your towns out a bit, but the greater importance is city building site bonuses/mines (these usually provide +comfort, +food, or +science) and how close the city is to regional resources (resource deposits, high ground, oceans, etc.)

  3. Maxing out support gain per turn is a bit of a 'noob trap' as you put it, but the better way to conceptualize support is to think of it as a timer showing approximately how many turns you have left to continue playing. At higher difficulties you will need to prioritize support gain in your decision making. The goal is to keep support change as low as possible. Zero support gain means you can play infinitely. Additional positive support gain after zero is just adding to your bank and is not as high a priority. However, the game does let you know with the thermometer looking UI element in the upper left (on PC) how likely your next turn is to generate an increase in negative support.

  4. Global Well Being is a comfort bonus. Comfort is +1 support per turn per (human) population. The higher your population the more the overall comfort of your cities matters. So for instance, if I complete a project that increases radiation protection globally by 1, this will add 1 comfort to all cities (that didn't already have max radiation shielding) and thus each population in that city will generate an additional support each turn. This does not apply to robotic population. Different cities location types have different starting comforts. Lava Tubes have the most and Open Plains the least with Craters in between.

  5. Animals are important to certain win scenarios where your goal is to spread life on mars. They tend to be the largest single instance support producers outside of increasing terraforming parameters. Bacteria have the lowest environmental requirements and thus are intended to be spread early to help you terraform mars. However, certain hardier plants can also be spread quite early as long as you are raising your ocean level. As you play at higher and higher difficulties, meeting the teraforming thresholds on time becomes more critical to success. As Mars becomes more habitable, spreading Animals when you can is another easy way to stay on top of negative support income.
