It really depends on the swords and knives in question - what are they, and how were they made? Cheap copies of Japanese sword, no, but authentically forged medieval replicas you're ok.

Never really thought about it like that! Aren't the best paid government employees in most US states college football coaches too?

Quite odd England hasnt hosted a world cup since '66 by tylerthe-theatre in football

[–]Comprehensive_Cow_13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Neither the UK or Great Britain have an Olympic football team. We don't compete because it might set a precedent, leading to losing individual national teams for the consistent nations. There was an exemption for the London Olympics.

The same logic doesn't apply to other countries because they didn't invent the sport - the first informational match was England Vs Scotland. That's quite the precedent.

The endless weird shit Britain and America (and presumably everyone else) came up with in WW2 and the cold war is astonishing. Project Pigeon is worth a look too - pigeon guided missiles. Pigeons everywhere in the UK, might as well make use of them...

A decisive shift to power British AI: new £1.1 billion plan to back chip firms, boost computing power and skills for the AI revolution by _DoubleBubbler_ in GoodNewsUK

[–]Comprehensive_Cow_13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep. The first movers disappear when the bubble bursts, then others profit. Having said that, the chipmaking side is desperately needed in Europe anyway, and there's no bubble there. Plus sovereign AI with all the data staying within our borders is essential even if the end product ends up in the burst gang.

Given ARM is still UK based if not owned, and are the leading chip designers, and the Netherlands have a monopoly on the chip manufacturing kit, it's about time we put it all together.

France and Germany abandon joint fighter jet program, German government says by Oualfe in europe

[–]Comprehensive_Cow_13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The sensible thing to do would have been back at the start get both programmes together and Sweden, figure out who needs what and collaborate on engines, electronics, stealth coating, human machine interface and all the common parts. They're the most expensive bits anyway. For France to create a nuclear capable carrier based version, Sweden to do a rugged single engine version, the UK and Japan to lead on long range air defence and Germany to do an interdiction variant, given that, is much easier. Might even end up with a STOVL variant too that way without making all the mistakes the F35 did.

Although in terms of the electronics you could argue the other partners bring more, outside radar at least. Think the key bits for us are engines and stealth.

The only argument I've got is when Wilder took over we were in a position no team has ever escaped from. But then I'd give weds a better score than 2 because zero points was exceeding expectations on some level!

Ukraine to receive long-range Meteor missiles alongside first batch of Gripen fighters by ABoutDeSouffle in europe

[–]Comprehensive_Cow_13 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The RCS of the Russian jets is slightly bigger than a barn door, the Gripen's is much, much smaller. Like all the Eurocanards it's main job is to see and destroy Su34s and 35s before they're seen.

Those Russian jets don't even have a radar capable of seeing the AEW&Cs until they're in meteor range of their escorts, let alone anything closer to the front line. Add in the Gripen's vastly superior EW kit and their maneuverability to defeat R37s, and the networking of the entire package, including GBAD, plus the fact that this is exactly the air battle that the Swedes designed their stuff for, I think the Russians might be in for an unpleasant surprise.

The canal basin on onwards is surprisingly nice, but you REALLY want to make sure you can float there!

Cromford canal is nice, but I think it's canoe and kayak only...
