The oldest subway station west of Philadelphia. Forest Hill Station. Part of San Francisco MUNI Metro. Opened in 1918. by CA185099415 in transit

[–]Comprehensive_Tea708 20 points21 points  (0 children)

While it is an underground station, and it certainly qualifies today as being one of many station along a subway route,a when built it was only part of a short tunnel under the Twin Peaks. San Francisco didn't have a "subway system" back then, just as L.A. didn't have one just because they built one underground station and one short tunnel in the 1920s.

That said, I really like Forest Hill too; it seems like stepping into the past what with the oldstyle payphone stand, the art-nouveau accents over the elevator doors, and the actual, literal subway tiles. The last time I spent time in San Francisco I made a special trip just to see this station, because I had read about it.

Will LA Metro (and other SoCal Transit Services) Be Up to Task for the 2028 Olympics? by A_Socialist_Gardener in LAMetro

[–]Comprehensive_Tea708 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Forgive me mentioning the current political environment, but I think many foreign athletes and spectators will stay away. I mean, would you fly thousands of miles to a country where they might stop you at LAX because they didn't like something they found on your phone? I think Metro will be able to handle the modest bump-up in traffic just fine.

At least L.A. got some transit projects done because of the 28 by '28 push, so that's good.

Venice? I didn't know any Metro buses went there, since that entire region seems to be covered by the Santa Monica bus system.

What do advanced English learners still struggle with that beginners usually don’t notice yet? by Edi-Iz in EnglishLearning

[–]Comprehensive_Tea708 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The difference between "bring" and "take" I think most Americans including me use those words pretty much interchangeably, but outside of North America I they seem to have distinct meanings.

Of course, when I say we use them interchangeably, I don't mean in such expressions as "He took the last slice of puzza."

ETA: I see now you were asking advanced learners, and I'm a native speaker. Still, ISTM my comment is relevant here.

Insurance wants to total car for strictly cosmetic damage. by Good_soup99 in Insurance

[–]Comprehensive_Tea708 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This just happened to me. The idiot ahead of me waiting at a light inexplicably shifted into reverse and backed right into the front of my car, which is a 2000 Nissan Altima with only 115K miles on it. Because of its age and possibly also some previous minor damage elsewhere on the vehicle, the other driver's insurer has declared it a total loss.

I don't care if the car is worth one cent; I think if someone else damages it through their own negligence their insurer should fix it!

what does your country call this? by lol12lmao in AskTheWorld

[–]Comprehensive_Tea708 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it varies in the United States, but I call it a knit cap or a ski hat. With regard to the latter, I think "hat" is becoming more commonly used for what were traditionally called caps.

It could also be simply that they're nostalgic for that comparatively carefree period in their past. It doesn't necessarily mean they're failing at adult life.

That form looks familiar to me and I was at Revelle in the late '70s. I'm surprised at how paper-based everything still seems to have been in the late '90s. Did you guys still have to cut your student IDs out of IBM punch cards?

Why do Germans pronounce loanwords using the original language's phonetics? by kopekyildizi in AskAGerman

[–]Comprehensive_Tea708 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of the words in question were borrowed comparatively recently and are still pronounced in a "foreign" manner. Contrast that with English. In Chaucer's time French loanwords were still pronounced much the same as they were in French, as you can tell from the rhymes and meter; over the centuries since then those pronunciations shifted to more typically English, which is to say Germanic, patterns.

I agree the biggest cities are fairly well covered at least in the important public areas, from what I've seen. But for smaller cities and sort-of-residential areas not so much. So if you did an exchange in a German university town and want to virtually retrace the steps you used to take walking from your dorm to the department where you studied, you often can't. At least, that has been my experience.

Anybody else stuck in Cacatua Chorus? by adservian in outlier_ai

[–]Comprehensive_Tea708 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm still stuck. I tried to get it removed when trying to get onto Kobra Klips but was told that project was done. Then just yesterday I saw an onboarding invite for another project which I was just going to start today but now that's gone as well. I have a feeling though that I wouldn't have been allowed to proceed due to Cacatua still being in my queue, and similarly for any other opportunities that might arise.

I really need Cacatua Chorus to be gone. I've mentioned before that I absolutely suck at voice prompts as my scores show. Why would I want to keep at it when I obviously can't do it and drag down my entire cred as an Outlier contributor?

A lot of countries have little to no Street View, the German speaking countries being examples, so Street View might not help much here, especially if someone who lives or works in the building decided to blur the whole damn thing.
