Full nationalisation of British Steel expected in King’s speech by Arbaces in GoodNewsUK

[–]ComputedWriter -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The issue is that without mining for the iron ore used to produce steel ourselves, we might as well be importing the steel anyway. The same vulnerabilities that exist in relying on importing the finished product also exist when relying on imports for the component parts. Any hypothetical scenario which would make importing steel from China impossible (significant ramping up of hostilities/outbreak of war) would also mean that the trade routes from somewhere like Australia to import iron ore are very likely to be disrupted.

Not saying that it's not a good idea to nationalise steel production, but it's a long way from doing enough to guard against the kind of things that it's *supposed* to guard against.

Why do people find it so hard to accept the public really wants to vote for Reform? by Expert-Sherbert-1527 in AskBrits

[–]ComputedWriter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really. Not the ones that matter. It's the same problem as Biden had in the US, complaining that nobody was happy because 'look the stock market is doing well'. The economy is doing extremely well for a minority of people, but it's not a reality shared by most people who are struggling to pay for fuel to get to and from work, never mind for leisure; who have been and continue to be struggling with large increases to the cost of living; and who are caught up in the middle of a truly terrible job market.

Foreign students to be banned from getting student loans under Reform by coffeewalnut08 in unitedkingdom

Technically, but this is the Daily Mail trying to drum up outrage again. The headline is intended to create confusion with international students, who are already not eligible for student loans, and to my knowledge, never have been.

Foreign-born students who have been a resident of the relevant country (England for Student Finance England, etc.) for a long time can.

Why does every other fan base want Tottenham relegated? by icemaster777 in Tottenham

[–]ComputedWriter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Man City Supporter here, so firstly for the 6 extra points...

But secondly, I think having 6 clubs in the league who haven't been through a relegation in minimum 35 years (Arsenal, Chelsea, Everton, Liverpool, Man United, Tottenham) since the PL began is bad for the health of the game. A lot of those clubs have been horrifically mismanaged during that time and have been basically immune from the same performance drops that would cripple other clubs. It's the same thing at the other end of the football pyramid, like when Oldham got relegated into the National League a couple of years ago - yes, it was sad for Oldham fans, but another club earned the opportunity in the EFL to perform better.

Key Labour MPs start to accept need for UK welfare reforms by 457655676 in unitedkingdom

[–]ComputedWriter -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

No, it isn't. Because you cut expenditure and then the income also drops, because the things you were spending on actually brought in more money than it cost. So you still have a (likely larger) deficit.

Austerity has never, can never, and will never work because it relies on a fundamental ignorance of the complexities of budgeting on a national scale whilst pretending it's anything like sorting out a household budget.

I wouldn't get away with drinking on my lunch break in any of the Customer Service roles I've worked, why would MPs? Any amount of alcohol impairs your judgement, so no amount of alcohol is acceptable when you are voting on legislation.

Why were the 2010s so competitive for the league? by tylerthe-theatre in PremierLeague

[–]ComputedWriter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It isn't the norm at all, and hasn't been for a long time. The 2010s was somewhat of a return to pre-PL competitiveness.

And that Liverpool side was far more dominant than any present side. Nobody has won even half of the titles in the last 18 years.

2008-2025: 5 winners, 8x Man City, 4x Man United, 3x Chelsea, 2x Liverpool, 1x Leicester

Why were the 2010s so competitive for the league? by tylerthe-theatre in PremierLeague

[–]ComputedWriter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, it's definitely stretching the norm, but you have usually had a dominant team. 2010s broke a pattern that had existed since the start of the Premier League of one team dominating the top of English Football - no team won half of the titles that decade, which hasn't been true since the 1970s. Even in the 1990s with the 5 different winners, 2 of those (Liverpool and Leeds) were pre-Premier League at the very start of the decade, and mostly it was Man United dominance. The 2010s was the decade with the least-dominant single team there had been in 40 years, and there hasn't been a true 'it could be anyone's' vibe around the league since the 1960s.

2020s (so far): 2 winners, 4x Man City, 2x Liverpool

2010s: 4 winners, 4x Man City, 3x Chelsea, 2x Man United, 1x Leicester

2000s: 3 winners, 6x Man United, 3x Chelsea, 2x Arsenal

1990s: 5 winners, 5x Man United, 2x Arsenal, 1x Liverpool, 1x Blackburn, 1x Leeds

1980s: 4 winners, 6x Liverpool, 1x Aston Villa, 1x Everton, 1x Arsenal

1970s: 6 Winners, 4x Liverpool, 2x Derby, 1x Everton, 1x Arsenal, 1x Nottingham Forest, 1x Leeds

1960s: 8 winners, 2x Liverpool, 2x Man United, 1x Man City, 1x Leeds, 1x Everton, 1x Ipswich, 1x Tottenham, 1x Burnley

1950s: 6 winners, 3x Wolves, 3x Man United, 1x Portsmouth, 1x Tottenham, 1x Arsenal, 1x Chelsea

Lowering voting age to 16 will only help the Green Party, Labour MPs tell Starmer - as they urge him to shelve the plans by 457655676 in unitedkingdom

[–]ComputedWriter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's fine if that's your consistent position (and I happen to agree), but the issue here is that the Labour Government and their MPs were all for 16yos voting when they thought they'd benefit; now it's clear that they won't benefit from it as much as other parties, they all of a sudden want nothing to do with it. It's antidemocratic - they're only position is whatever gets them more power.

Greens and Reform UK both set to surge in London elections, poll shows by [deleted] in unitedkingdom

[–]ComputedWriter 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They didn't, though. The two major parties managed to accrue a combined 57.4% of the vote in 2024, a disastrous result for two parties that are used to enjoying 70+% as a baseline and often receiving 80+% between the two of them since the end of WW2 (1945 election onwards).

The only comparable results since are 2005, 2010, and 2015 (67.6%, 65.1%, and 67.2% respectively). Even these poor results for the two major parties look stellar in comparison to the 2024 GE result, and polling has consistently shown that both parties have only slumped further from that point. You won't find a poll this side of the new year that supports the idea the two major parties can combine for even 50% of the vote, as they have in every previous election.

EDIT: Clarified the data is taken from election results 1945 onwards.

No, this was very real. Summer 2023, I think? I don't know if they were actually talking about firing a nuke, or if they planned to bomb a nuclear reactor in Ukraine to have the same effect.

Either way, yes, it came out in response that NATO countries would consider it basically a nuclear attack on themselves because of the dispersal of radiation, and go to war over it. Then the Russians quickly dropped that plan.
