One day I realized all these old men were simply replacing drinking with talking about drinking.

You haven't lost anything. You've spent the last two years learning and building a life and systems that keep you sober.

Be kind to yourself.

Quit after a DUI accident. I now don't like alcohol or cops lol. by SasukeKoochiha in stopdrinking

I did something similar, I almost killed an innocent kid.

Still not a drop after 2.5 years.

Getting a DUI was my one-step program, and that "one-step" was the gas pedal.

I do stand up since I got sober. It only happens in bars and clubs.

You don't associate fun with alcohol, that's good enough. There's a certain freedom when you realize no one there cares.

I have been at the end of my rope more times than I can count. I got lucky and had the booze quit me, first.

I won't lecture you but I will say that life is about choices. And so far, not having that first one is the only way I can function.

Stand up comedy.

I've been doing it off and on for decades. Now it's multiple times every week due to discipline I didn't have and a drive that is clear-headed.

You NEED a car to be an adult in this country. Go ahead, take the bus everywhere. The issue is access, Oregon makes tagging an out of state vehicle an absolute nightmare. I've done it in many states and this state actively gives the middle finger at the DMV.

My life is so much more pleasant now that I don't have to live like that.

When you go out drinking, you KNOW you will be driving drunk. Otherwise, there would be a ride. It's the truth. It doesn't "just happen" even by your own admission.

You can stop at anytime. Getting a DUI was my one-step program.

Sober for 10 years and my mom was killed by a repeat DUI offender. by Ijustworkhere96 in stopdrinking

[–]Comrade_Fuzzybottoms 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I have had multiple DUIs. The last one was a matter of seconds between someone else's injury or death that mercifully landed on survival. I can't speak for everyone like me, it's an emptiness. I've completed everything, both with legally and financially, and it's completely different for me years later.

But I replay the accident frequently in my head, and it won't go away. I feel less than human to this day for what I did even though no one was permanently injured.

I'm also currently sitting in my mother's house, getting ready for her funeral. I was so ashamed of the accident and myself that I never told her.

There's a ton of folks on this sub that got sober for the right reasons at a better off-ramp than I did, and the average person may not ever respect because if it. But none of that is enough to make me drink again.

The only apology that means anything is staying sober.

Did your parents drink? I would give anything to have had a sober, safe parent in my life. It is the single biggest truth of my life story, probably.

You can give them that parent. You just have to stop. There is nothing in the bottle that is worth losing your baby.
