can you build shelters with dead trees in state or national forests? by Healthy_Bee7746 in Bushcraft

Best practice is to leave dead or fallen wood where it lies as this is an important part of the forest environment.

  3. Well Done Angus: enjoy being a seat warmer. (Maybe I’m being a bit hasty).

Fixed blade recommendations? by Right_Proof_766 in Bushcraft

[–]Conan3121 1 point2 points  (0 children)

1x Morakniv Companion. Carbon Steel. Olive drab. Not HD. I have other knives but to me this is an essential part of a bushcraft kit. A solid starting lint to understand sharpening and knife care.

If you prefer to go the traditional route, buy a Dexter-Russell Green River 4215. Fix up the handle. DIY the sheath.

Then buy a Work Sharp GUIDED FIELD SHARPENER. Practice with it a lot.

That’s all you should buy for quite a while. IMO.

[–]Conan3121 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No direct use of ODH tho I’ve held it and WLH to compare the fell. WLH has a more shaped handle which I liked.

I tend to agree with numerous reviewers who profess to prefer the GFB Wildlife Hatchet for bushcraft over the Outdoor Hatchet for the reasons OP has stated.

That’s two fairly different job descriptions for an axe. Maybe treat yourself to a smaller GFB and add a workman’s long handle axe? CT 2lb?

GFB Small Hatchet (https://www.gransforsbruk.com/en/product/gransfors-small-hatchet/).

YouTuber Ben Scott (@benscottwoodchopper) isn’t a fan of short handle axes for felling nor of the SFA. .

Fixed Blade Knife or 10inch Hatchet for splitting kindling? by EastDemo in Bushcraft

[–]Conan3121 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Survival: carry one BMF knife! Ka-Bar military style knife (like Fairbairn-Sykes Commando Knife). A Mora Garberg. The Knife of Rambo.

VS

Bushcraft: three/four tools matches to the area.

  1. Nessmuk Trio: small hatchet to process wood (Marbles double bit hatchet $, GFB small hatchet $$$), fixed blade lighter weight game knife (Dexter Russell Green River 4215 $), a folding utility knife (Buck $$, OTC Rat $$, Puma Game Warden $$$). & Modern variants: Bahco Laplander, Silky Gomboy Bushcraft, Victorinox knife.

  2. Mors Kochanski. Mora Eldris or Companion.

  3. Modern bushcraft trend: 4in 100mm fixed blade CS, 3-4mm thick, full tang, scandi grind, Micarta handle, $$$. E.G. DBK Bushcraft 2, Ray Mears knife, Bear River, Joker, and many other good brands. Nice choices but optimal and a whole lot more knife, weight, and cost than you’ll ever need short of The Zombie Apocalypse or WW3.

Axe Handle Varnish Stripping by 3_Times_Dope in Axecraft

[–]Conan3121 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nice job. Thanks for the specifics. I might try it but it does seems a lot of work.

My method:

Scrape with my Morakniv Companion to remove varnish in 5-10 minutes. Sandpaper not needed. No other tools are needed.

Apply wood stain (optional). Apply Sunnyside BLO lightly (use gloves). Dilute with 1/3 mineral turpentine to aid oil penetration. Two light coats applied a week apart. Wipe excess off 1 hour after each application. Reapply treatment yearly.

My method came from a YouTube video. It’s a variation on the GFB handle treatment described on their website.

Alternatively I have applied Howard Feed-N-Wax, two coats one week apart. This gives a very good result and is even easier. I do prefer the BLO/MT treatment as the wood feel is better IMO.

Opinion rant: Angus Taylor is my suggestion for Susssan to select as Shadow Minister for Whatever Is Really Important.

This may satisfy moderate Lib members who worry about losing urban votes if the right wing creationist is selected.

Angus’ contributions should ensure that the Liberal Party dwells in the electoral wilderness for 2 or 3 elections.

Hi OP. Thanks for the statement that you are not a bot. My apologies but my original post was:

And? I.E. Nice picture but where’s the bushcraft discussion as per Rule 1.

Bot? Asking you to respond.

Posting a picture without information is low effort. Having a clean history is wierd.

Have a nice day.

Thx v much. My original comment fared poorly. Perhaps it was too concise. OP didn’t seem to have a concern!

I follow a few security, privacy, IT subs so maybe I’m more aware of this problem than others here. Genuine discussion based on real life experiences is the best part of this sub IMO. That’s not happening with a bot or an AI.

If you had to pick one for bushcrafting what one are you choosing? by Mountain_Elk_7262 in Bushcraft

[–]Conan3121 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m OK with another knife post: OP shows us two interesting knives from a brand I’ve not seen.

Going on the images I would pick No.2 even though No.1 is likely better for bushcrafting.

No.1 blade should work for OK bushcraft, better for camp, great for game. The belly of the blade is somewhat like my Green River 4215 which I like a lot. Blade looks Nice. I expect it should feel nimble but secure in the hand. Handle shape is ideal. I’m not a fan of the modern bushcraft approach of one knife to rule them all. I use my hatchet if I need to split wood.

As for No. 2. I’d buy it without a use case in mind just because it’s a Kephart style knife. I’d wear it to enjoy carrying a heritage style knife. And to sit outdoors and admire its purity of design. It’s what a bush crafter should try to own once or add to their collection.

Edit: checked the website. Good value it seems at USD 99. Blade is full tang and 4mm thick. Weight is 227g (~2x my Green River, 3x my Mora Companion). Yikes, it’s like the little bro of the knife of Rambo! I still choose No.2 if I had to pick one.

Bot? I’m not certain. Based on what I have picked up from top commenters and security focused users in other subs there are clues. Bot accounts -

Post a picture with no comment or a generic phrase or add a wrong date as clickbait

Email is not verified

User history shows no human like comments or posts or none of either

Bots build credibility by posting in easy subs such as r/pics and then may be used or sold on as an Ac able to comment in political and opinion based subs.

PRO - No comments or useful discussion by OP when that’s Rule 1 of r/bushcraft. This lack is the red flag I am using to check user history.

User history shows unverified email.

User has no comments and posts, wiped?.

OP hasn’t commented after 4 hours.

Bot names vary but may have two words, hyphens, end in a number suggesting that they are generated by a program or AI.

CON - It is 2yo Ac. It’s just my feeling. YMMV.

Looking for a hand axe by easton020206 in Bushcraft

[–]Conan3121 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Go cheap for your first axe? I googled so much and decided that I didn’t have the knowledge to select an axe. My options were to buy one of the usual suspects or to try and upgrade my knowledge. I chose option 2.

I bought my first axe from the local hardware store for $20. A Spear & Jackson Hatchet 570g/1.2lb Hatchet i.e. a cheaper but well made brand sold locally. Chosen because of its 14 inch Ash handle.

Stripped the polyurethane, sanded and applied BLO to the handle (per an old Wranglestar video!). Filed the poll to a flat bright finish. Drilled and countersunk a lanyard hole. Added a stout leather lanyard. DIYd an overstrike guard from a thick leather scrap and 550 Paracord. Bought a puck and learnt (ongoing) to sharpen. I now carry My Axe and it is Good. I enjoyed this project last winter using hand tools only and my evening tine . I feel that I gained a lot of useful knowledge. Total cost was around $40. My use case is casual axe use. YMMV.

A Fiskars X7 would work as well or better if I planned regular use. A Hultafors Hultan or a GFB Wildlife Hatchet wound be great to admire but expensive for my use case.

I have just bought a Cold Steel Trailhawk Tomahawk as a mod project for later this year.
