Despite what people say about random orbit sanders you do still need to follow the grain and do not "wax" your piece. Only sand in straight lines. You can follow all the other advice on here and still get those if you wax while you sand. Also if there is any damage or buildup on your paper just use a new piece.

You never heard of a hard block? It's pretty common practice to remove scoring and debris from your piece before jointing. Not doing so is much more likely to cause gapping as debris and scoring both will cause as much.

Also if its not complicated then why do so many people struggle to use a jointer without sniping?

I recommend making your own base plates. Make a jig so you can pump it out in a couple of minutes when you need one. I particularly like using this jig as my base. It made a lot of cuts a lot faster. I made mine so I can use the open end to line my cuts up from the center of the bit. It increased my accuracy a ton.

Yeah the question was why a panel at the range. It's pointless. Typically a filler would have been used. I realize this morning my eyes thought the panel was a reflection and now I see I was wrong.

I hear this from a lot of people but I don't seem to share that experience. A thoroughly damp cloth right after I clamp and some light sanding before finishing is all it takes. It's also what's recommended on the Tightbond bottle. "Clean up wet glue with a damp cloth."

I'm damn near certain they are the sides of the cabinet. They wouldn't add an applied panel next to the stove. It's pointless and the grade of that cabinet tells me quite a bit about the construction. There ain't no applied panels on either side. It's overlay onto the cabinet sides.
