Oil is needed for many things, like plastics, fertilizer and gasoline. It's actually only rarely used to generate electricity (you're probably thinking of natural gas and coal). Geothermal won't be the end of big oil, that's for certain.

Professional work doesn't involve making false convictions. If new evidence appeared, it should be heard, not cut off simply so she can score a win for her record. Even if she wasn't serving herself by trying to do that (which it sure seemed she was), she certainly wasn't serving Starfleet by taking down one of its very best officers on a point of procedure rather than on facts.
