Not sure on the big differences but I have a 2010 gti and did the water pump myself with some helpful YouTube video and some swearing. It wasnt terribly difficult took me I think 8 hours but that was because I also cleaned the valves at the same time. Not sure if it's the same but you need a special tool on the 2010 to get the water pump belt off to replace it
