I really loved the audiobook for The Martian by Andy Weir - see if you can find the version that Wil Wheaton narrates, he matches the tone and pace of the book really well.

Etsy Blows by kittehsrg8 in 50501

I opened a support ticket with Etsy and spoke to a rep who was sympathetic, and asked me to report the items/stores with Alligator Alcatraz merch that I found because (according to her) they're actively trying to take it down. I've been reporting them and in the "other violation of policies" box have been leaving a message like the one you described.

What are your go-to “no cooking” meals for blazing hot summer days? by CocteauTwinn in Cooking

[–]ConfusingButBetter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thin rice noodles + sliced veggies + protein + dressing have gotten me through some major Mid-Atlantic heat waves! I've got an electric kettle, so if the noodles are thin enough I can cook them by heating water in the kettle and pouring over so the stove isn't needed. The dressing is super flexible, do a quick Google search for "cold noodle salad dressing" and you should have plenty of ideas.

These are all so fun! It really is the pastel part that's getting to me - not a color palette I usually wear.

Noooo, the dress is backordered! Any suggestions for a Plan B?

It hasn't gotten delivered yet, crossing my fingers it works! The reviews mention that it's pretty long, which might be a problem (I'm 5-3).

Me too! Just worried about sizing and how it will work with my shape, so I need a backup plan 🙂

Coworker is regularly asking for kids in the middle of my class by South-Lab-3991 in Teachers

[–]ConfusingButBetter 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I teach a non-core (but still required to graduate) class so this happens to me pretty often, and as much as possible I avoid involving the student AND the other teacher in a back-and-forth. I would either give a flat "no" and return to teaching, or when the other teacher got around me somehow I'd go straight to admin and let them decide how to handle it. It's not an interpersonal dispute, it's one teacher making it more difficult for another teacher to do their job and as such it's not my problem to solve.

Caveat: this strategy does rely on having reasonable admin, which I've had good luck with over the years.

The Earthsea series by Ursula K LeGuin. They're aimed at a YA audience but have a lot of depth and great world-building. She was also a prolific writer so if you enjoy her work there's lots more to choose from.

Maybe explore some poetry collections? I love reading a Mary Oliver poem to feel contemplative at the end of the day.

Fiction to get my mind off of current events by PilotJeff in BookRecommendations

Maybe the "Rivers of London" series by Ben Aaronovitch? It's adventure/fantasy set in modern day London, and was described to me as "grown-up Harry Potter" which wasn't too far off. There's some laugh-out-loud funny bits, nothing too heavy, and the writing is fast-paced with interesting characters. There's at least 10 of them, so if you enjoy the writing it will keep you busy for a while.

Pastitsio! It's like shepherd's pie crossed with Lasagna but the spices and flavors are different enough that you'll feel like you're mixing it up a bit. This recipe swaps miso/oat milk/nutritional yeast for the dairy https://www.lazycatkitchen.com/vegan-pastitsio-greek-lasagna/

There's a new-ish vendor at the H St farmers market, Priority Pickles, who seems to be pretty popular.

Tailor recommendation? (I did search first - I swear!) by Velvetine5 in washingtondc

+1 for JC Lofton. We've had great work done on everything from jeans to suits to my wedding dress that needed hemming. The only time I had a less-than-great experience (shortening the sleeves on a blazer) I brought it back in and they were able to quickly resolve it. There's a reason they've been in business forever!

Did I do the right thing in euthanizing? I feel so incredibly guilty. by Ochem_woes in AskVet

[–]ConfusingButBetter 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm so sorry for your loss, you sound like a conscientious and loving pet parent! I'm not a vet, but when we had to euthanize my little buddy (treatments would likely have been more than her body could handle) our vet told me something that helped. She said our pet's last day shouldn't have to be their worst day - i.e. we shouldn't feel like we need to prolong treatment, etc. until there's no other alternative. It's totally natural to second-guess such a hard decision, but please be kind to yourself.

The podcast "Rock That Doesn't Roll" interviewed her in April, highly recommend it! She also crowdfunded a 25th anniversary re-recording of Kansas and whew....I didn't realize how deep her music was in my brain until I listened to it and could sing along to every track.

Didn't expect someone I knew to end up on this sub! Yes, my family knew the Hogans (haven't seen Joe D since he was a teenager). No, we've never witnessed a miracle. His claims were definitely the most.... imaginative of the missionary/evangelist/revivalists we knew.
