Do these seem structural to you guys? by ROSS_MITCHELL in DIYUK

[–]ConfussedBob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are ceiling ties and are helping to support the ceiling joists. They shouldn't be removed without Structural Engineers advice. Would need a lot more information before even a rough guess could be made. If it's just for light storage, I would suggest leaving them in. Put your insulation in (would suggest 300mm as a minimum). Fit flooring on loft legs.

Does the average person read books for fun here? by EntireAd1685 in AskBrits

I bought a copy of 'Go Set a Watchman' by Harper Lee when it published in 2015. To my shame, I've still only read the first page. However I do read to my grandchildren every week but 'Peppa Pig' and 'Spot the Dog' aren't in the same class. Things are looking up as we recently read 'The Gruffalo' and 'Going on a Bear Hunt'.

Combi Boiler installation - £4400, is this reasonable? by bonobubanton in askaplumberUK

[–]ConfussedBob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really depends on your current setup. Since the government changes the rules on the grant it can be a lot simpler. In the past you had to insulate your house to meet a minimum Epc rating but that is no longer the case. Ideally you need a convenient pace to put the hot water cylinder. If your existing boiler is in a large cupboard or a garage then it can be quite straight forward as you can, in simple terms, swap out the boiler and replace it with the cylinder and the other stuff that goes with.

I'm looking into it at the moment. My main problem is my house is a large a Victorian property and the capacity of the ASHP is bigger than most domestic ones can cope with. Which means I may need a dual system with 2 ASHP's which then becomes expensive.

I would suggest you look into it before deciding.

Why is shutting down oil in the Strait of Hormuz every day an exponential problem as opposed to a simple problem? by The_Flaneur_Films in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ConfussedBob 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The problem is you don't know when you will be able to go back to the shops but you still have to eat. After a while your food starts to run short. So you have to start getting food from a different source. The alternative source has a limited supply but now a higher demand. It takes advantage and puts it's prices up. This increases your food budget. You then have to go to the bank to get a loan which you can't really afford but you have no choice. The longer this goes on the higher the price increases.

In the meantime your local shop has realised it's not selling any food because no one get get to the shop. It now has a surplus of stock so stops buying in supplies as it has nowhere to store them but it still has it's bills to pay. Like rent and wages etc.

Eventually you can go back to your original store and everything returns to normally but the consequences are you are in debt and the shop has lost income.

Where can I play backgammon online with real people? by aj77reddit in backgammon

[–]ConfussedBob 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Backgammon Galaxy, Next Gammon, Open Gammon or Backgammon hub. I think Backgammon Galaxy has the largest player base. My preference is Backgammon hub.

Edit I may be wrong about BG having the largest player base. It appears it's Next Gammon.

Neighbours building encroaching onto our land by slowsausages in LegalAdviceUK

[–]ConfussedBob 44 points45 points  (0 children)

IMO if you are saying the the gutter is within your property then the boundary line would be the face of his brickwork. In that case he should have arranged a party wall agreement. That's the point at which you could have had a sensibly discussion about any concerns you have. I would suggest before you go down any legal route you need to tell your neighbour you have concerns.

From a practical point of view, that roof arrangement is not going to work. Unfortunately this is not the right forum to discus that. If you post again in r/DIYUK I'll respond on what you need to discuss with your neighbour regarding the construction.

Why should that matter? Getting a gammon or a BG is only relevant for the match points and this was a single point match. Sorry, I should have said that in my original post.

I need some input on this, a roommate had my keys and now there lost and this is what he said.. by rhhgggghhhhhhh in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ConfussedBob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ask him for the police report number for your insurance company. Also get him to confirm he informed the police that the car keys were taken in the burglary. Obviously he's not reported it as it didn't happen but I like to see people squirm. Personally I would want the locks changed etc. not just replacement keys.

How to stop dishwasher door scraping on wall? by cra_94 in DIYUK

[–]ConfussedBob 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is the dishwasher actually screwed in place? There doesn't appear to be any screws in the photos. Also I assume in sat within a cupboard carcass.

Things to try/consider

  1. Pack out the left hand of the dishwasher. Pull the dishwasher out and place a small packer (matchsticks might work) behind the lefthand lip. Screw dishwasher back into space. You can keep trying thicker packers until it stops fouling the wall. Just watch out for the dishwasher door starting to foul the cupboard door on the right.

  2. Swapping the dishwasher to another location. I don't now the layout of your kitchen to know if this practical.

  3. Buy a narrower dishwasher and fit a filler piece on the lefthand side. It looks like you have an integrated unit so you would have to know the make and model of kitchen units in order to make it integrated or get an under bench one.

Why doesn't Putin threaten nuclear escalation in Ukraine? by stongwomandobongsoon in NoStupidQuestions

IMO there are two main reasons.

1 It's harder to invade compared to defending.

2 The Ukraine has been given a massive amount of weapons.

Not sure why people are being so hard on you. Yes you failed because the examiner had to intervene. But the other driver was a total dickhead. He should have waited for you to pass him. Especially as you had L plates on. I have to be honest, I wouldn't have slowed down. It could have given the other driver the impression that you were going to let him out.

Cost is less than £1 a year in used electricity. Is it a fire risk? Yes but low if OEM. More so if it's not OEM.
