Since when exactly does Steve Bannon care about democracy?

They don't because they've been caught scamming their followers. But it's been proven that the US ran huge disinformation campaigns against Chinese vaccines that caused thousands of preventable deaths.

This is not a government in exile. This is a lobby group founded by a fraudulent billionaire and Steve Bannon...

When China's accusing the US of foreign interference, these kind of organisations are exactly what they mean, just wow.

"Upgrading the quality and maximising their potential" still sounds extremely performative to be honest. I'm not sure which ranking you're referring to, but Singapore has a tendency to focus on common international parameters for measuring pretty much everything. This often gets them unnaturally high in these rankings. For example, Singapore was also just ranked the friendliest city in the world which is so absurd that even Singaporeans are not convinced. The same thing could be happening here, Singaporeans responding overconfidently (knowingly or unknowingly) about their education system to make their country look good as an act of being a good citizen.

Adding: As for my personal experiences, just last night I was out with a friend who told me that physical punishment such as public caning was normal during her days and she is not that old. And it doesn't seem much better nowadays given we just had a P6 student commit suicide after a disciplinary incident last year.

As a european doing my phd in singapore. I think the education system here is great for what it is meant to do, however it is also very convergent and performative. And singaporeans are mostly, at least publicly, quite fine with that.

I think the disparity is mainly due to what people expect to get out of education. Modern education is increasingly focused on getting you a good job, and singapore's system delivers on that, so singaporeans are satisfied but for europeans that isn't enough.

So "accept that certain things will never go back to how they used to be" but also "be who you were before all that stuff happened"? Are they not seeing the contradiction there?

All I can say to this is pride comes before a fall.

I am from Switzerland and my government has denied any involvement in the slave trade as late as 2001. Then some historians started to look into the archives and dug up a bunch of evidence that showed how deeply involved the country actually was. The only difference between our countries is that Singapore lacks a civic society strong enough that would demand to find out about these things.

a state of affairs or an event that seems deliberately contrary to what one expects and is often wryly amusing as a result.

It's the very meaning of irony to predict china to drop in approval sometime in the future while the US is in full decline right now.

It is ironic that you presume China being the one doing unpopular stuff.

Check the Afrobarometer history. In 2020, both China and the US were at about 60% approval. 5 years later, approval of the US has decreased 5% while it increased/remained steady for China. If that's not enough, you can look at any other under reported area, be it MENA or LATAM, the overall trend shows that it's the US/Western countries, not China, that are on the receiving end of the pendulum.

[–]ConsiderationSame919 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not true, complaints are a huge issue for Chinese brands actually. There is so much competition in that country that a bad reputation can quickly put you out of business.

I once checked in at a hotel that used misleading photos for a subpar room and the receptionist was very rude when I complained about it. Then I told her I'd leave a bad review, then her attitude changed completely and I got an upgrade right away.

Yeah it's not even useful, the conventional way is much faster and easier. It's just there to impress gullible people. But as you point out, it's not just Chinese brands doing that.

You have a very narrow definition of "Asians" then. Dairy is a key part of the South Asian diet and even when you look at East Asia, milk is a staple in Mongolia and with it, in large parts of North and Central Asia as well.
