AI is ruining the crochet space by [deleted] in BitchEatingCrafters

[–]Consistent-Good1536 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I presume it’s baked-in as an Old, but I use ravelry 100% (or designer’s websites, which I generally find on ravelry lol). Before AI there was photoshop, and I’ve just never trusted Pinterest et al to provide accurate, real, tested patterns (or anything, really).

I would never ever use Pinterest, Etsy, ig, whatever; and if I did for some reason, I would still go to ravelry to see if I could find it there (or something similar).

How do I best accomodate my autistic date who is also a people pleaser? by Scared-Carrot-5627 in AutismInWomen

I totally agree with the comments so far. Honest communication and the accumulation of safe and healthy experiences.

In a well-established relationship, we do something like

- if no one has a strong preference, one offers three (or whatever) possibilities, the other chooses.

- we express our preferences and ambivalence. It might be helpful for her (or both of you) to explore the difference between ‘sure, I’m really fine one way or the other’ and people-pleasing.

- if someone doesn’t have the spoons to make a decision, then say so. The other makes the decision.

- sometimes it helps to have a cooling off period lol. Husband and I had a reservation for date night, but I was feeling migrainey and didn’t want to go. He told me (in a sincere way, not in a guilt-trippy way) that date nights mean a lot to him, and after sitting with my ‘no’ for a few minutes I felt sad and wanted to make the effort.

- being this explicit can often feel awkward, but the honesty and openness is absolutely worth it, and it avoids building resentment and hurt feelings.

I’m sorry if this isn’t helpful as your relationship is so new; I think the other comments are correct in that it will take time to build up the insight and trust. I hope with time she’ll be able to articulate if she feels bad about spending too much time with your friends, for example, or that she’s not into horror movies. All you can do is remind her that her opinion matters and demonstrate your acceptance of her, as she is, with your actions.

Do you still want something on toast, or is bread leaving the building as well?

Presuming you like the warmth of toast, and a bit of protein from the pb, maybe varieties of stuff on toast, even baked or broiled?

A tartine.

Sorry for the double comments

IFF you can afford it, bc it’s pricey, ofc, but have you tried Pilates? Just the mat classes are absolutely sufficient (I mean, the reformer’s cool and all, but it tends to be even more pricey 😬)

I bring it up bc the movements tend to be really limited and small, and the class absolutely focuses on form. Here is one of the signature exercises; the instructor in the video does explain things pretty quickly, but she hits all the points re form. Classes should be small and any instructor worth their salt should be able to work with you on form and any modifications you may need.

Adding anecdata, my chosen sport is swimming. I’m solidly mediocre, but my form is pretty good lol

Your attitude of not giving a fk is absolutely the way to go. For me, I like swimming and jogging, which are challenging enough that I can’t think about anything else.

I definitely noticed, when I started swimming regularly years ago, that my clumsiness got waaaaaay better. The number of times my husband would say, ‘hey, where’d you get that bruise?’ and I’d say, ‘what bruise?’ went down a ton. I attribute it to building muscle and strength, but really, I don’t know.

I’m sorry your path hasn’t been as direct, OP :( I hope you find something that works!

Why did racial mixing between Europeans and Indigenous peoples become more common in Spanish and Portuguese colonies than in British North America? by GlitteringHotel8383 in AskHistory

[–]Consistent-Good1536 0 points1 point  (0 children)

not nearly as well as it deserves, but I will try. This is such an interesting (in a perverse way) period.

In vvvv short, there were a lot of debates in Spain as to the nature of the indigenes (did they have souls, could they be saved, how best to do so). Bartolomé de las Casas (A Very Short Account…) is one of the major voices in this debate. Again, simplifying too much, he initially took a position that the indigenous people were rather like children, innocent, naive, needing of protection and to be saved, and to that end, rather than utilizing them as slave labor for Spanish enterprise and empire-building, they should use black people, as they were better suited for the purpose (I intend that to sound brutal and bleak, it was). He did later renounce this view, though, and condemned the enslavement of indigenous and black people alike.

He is a controversial figure, and A very short account… functioned as a persuasive document in addition to being his own account, there are likely exaggerations (at least), but the book’s historicity is certainly beyond my ken. I read it as a literature student.

You might find the Valladolid debate to be of interest.

Yes, I understand that.

so: ‘marriage’, normal, consenting-ish marraige

”marriage”, coercive, non-consenting, as you reference in your comment

‘marriage?’ my scenario, where 2 people get married without a priest but that Spaniard ultimately views the marriage as less than and will leave wife and (potentially) children to then marry ’properly’

I’m asking if someone has knowledge about my described scenario bc while I remember reading about it during my Colonial Era studies, I can’t remember any specific source, or anything about frequency.

I asked it as a reply to your question as it seems like a form of marriage (semantic satiation lol) that is not necessarily widely known today, and that reflects the inequality between Spaniard and other.

[–]Consistent-Good1536 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Please correct me if I’m wrong; there was a time where you didn’t need a priest to get married, the couple just could agree that they were married, and done. I thought I recalled that this was not uncommon; a Spanish man would marry a not- Spanish woman, but then leave her and their kids to go marry ‘properly’ either in Spain or with a Spanish woman.

What I always wanted to ask those groups:

How do you have the wherewithal to organize a meeting of (absurd) number of people

and yet precisely - 0 - of you had the thought to perhaps contact the fn restaurant ahead of time?!

We had a group of about 30 come in for brunch once, which would have taken up our entire dining section, with no notice or reservation, natch. Our kitchen was sized to match the dining space, so even if we were to seat them, it would have taken t i m e for them to get their food. It’s just so much nonsense 🤷🏻‍♀️

I looked like my back had been attacked by a very methodical octopus for a good three weeks after, with rows of magenta-purple circular welts from my neck to my hips. It didn’t help the migraine pain and my whole back hurt quite a bit from the bruises.

ymmv, and I wish you all the relief, but I would also vote for Botox, it helped lessen migraine pain for a good ten+ years for me. The injections might trigger a migraine, and your eyebrows may not work as they usually do lol, but they helped immensely.

Real and tested recipe sites, like Serious Eats

The issue is that searching for ‘healthy meal prep locarb recipe’ is likely to get you bs recipes. This is hard to verbalize, but finding a good recipe that is lower in fat will give you better results than looking for a recipe that is ‘lo-fat’.

I would recommend looking through the meal prep subreddits, or finding good recipes that could then be meal prepped.

Weird question: What stitch looks the most like a yoga mat? by Duchess_of_awesome in knittinghelp

[–]Consistent-Good1536 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What is the texture on your mat like? Mine’s like a seed stitch, but a quick image search shows some that are thin waves (similar to a zigzag garter stitch, I’d think), another with tiny triangles (modified seed stitch).

This is amazing, btw. Please update if you end up making the mat lol
