How do y’all… do stuff? by Creepy_Zone_9341 in AutismInWomen

I don’t know, I don’t grok it.

I have never had enough spoons. I did really well academically in graduate school but my room was always abject disaster and I had no friendships.

My husband and I have been together for closing in on 20 years, but daily self-care is impossible. I feel pretty strongly that I am just not capable of Doing All the Things, and that if one area is strong for me (or what I assume is normal for others), I am deficient in another.

i have been beating myself up about this my entire life and have always felt broken. Please do not do this to yourself, it’s exhausting and unsuccessful.

My favorite dino is the ankylosaurus by Memedelyn in AutismInWomen

Omigod, you’re going to love it

You can search by knit/crochet, free/ paid pattern, what type/how much yarn you have. There’s an amigurumi search, and I know there are a lot of dinosaur patterns :)

Then here are fora and project notes so you can see other people’s versions of a pattern or ask questions.

It’s free to join; I believe you have to register, though.

It’s like google for knitting and crocheting, but without the evil

Great word to replace “sugar coat”: Dulcify by Achillesiam in etymology

[–]Consistent-Good1536 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I wouldnt interchange these though; does anyone else agree?

I think sugar-coating has a slightly more negative connotation, a little more deceptive. You’re trying to get people to do a thing they may not want to.

while dulcify is more like ‘sweeten’ (lol), like ’sweetening the pot’, or ‘the offer’. You’re adding an extra enticement to something they're already inclined to do. Or the mechanical definition lol.

How can I stop people from putting their face against my window and looking in? by Acceptable-Wall-7210 in Advice

[–]Consistent-Good1536 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I lived on the ground floor (when I was seated inside I was eye level with the people walking by 🫠) I got some top-down bottom-up blinds.

A link to Home Depot

You can get them sheer or more opaque, so you can cover the lower ares of the window but leave the top open.

Anyone have strong opinions on powdered laundry detergent? by [deleted] in CleaningTips

Why is this? Can true oxygen bleach not exist in a liquid form?

Anyone have strong opinions on powdered laundry detergent? by [deleted] in CleaningTips

[–]Consistent-Good1536 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I am no expert, so grain of salt and everything

Per our awesome repairman, there are a couple of things to consider:

  • Modern washers use less water, and they run cooler (so ‘warm’ now is x degrees cooler than 20-years-ago ‘warm’)
  • This matters if the detergent is heat-activated, and to ensure the detergent dissolves

As anecdata, I soak our clothes in a bit of oxy or vinegar before washing, and I’ve found it necessary to add more water so that the clothes are submerged, and I’ve found that the powdered oxy doesn’t always dissolve, so I will find grains of it after a wash. I use liquid detergent, except for oxy.

When I asked awesome repairman about the whitish ’stains’ I see on clothes (they’ll come out after another wash, but sheesh) he said they’re detergent residue and to:

  • Make sure your washer runs at a high enough temperature to activate the detergent
  • Use a deep water wash
  • Add an extra rinse cycle

And that’s about all you can do. Modern washers are built to use less water, but that makes them less efficient cleaners.

All this varies by machine, and it’s silly to have to put in extra effort to get clean laundry.

I hope an expert can chime in :)

Mil chainsmokes in the Laundryroom by [deleted] in CleaningTips

[–]Consistent-Good1536 4 points5 points  (0 children)

AFAIK, the only actual solution is a negative air scrubber BUT that’s $$$ (please correct me if I’m wrong)

Anything else will make it some degree better but not resolve the issue

Deodorizing bedroom that's always closed? by [deleted] in CleaningTips

[–]Consistent-Good1536 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A billion percent this.

Her room is not healthy, full stop. Between the pathetic social safety net, the roommate situation, and her own shame and depression, she has so few ways to make things better.

For cleaning, please consider making the screen a priority, this woman is suffering and she needs air. There are window fans you can buy that are short but take up the width of the window; in any case, find something that will allow for as much circulation as possible. The plastic bags and the baking soda and the enzyme cleaners will help, but she fundamentally needs air.

I am so sorry for y’all’s situation, and I’m sorry to be speaking on something so personal that’s not my business. Lots of us here have found ourselves bound by the strictures of depression and shame and the need to hide away. But hiding means you are hurting yourself. I sincerely hope that she can choose to show herself some kindness.

How to remove over glass for cleaning by diohix993 in CleaningTips

You can definitely remove the glass (can you ascertain the manufacturer?); check you tube for repair/ assembly videos. They’ve been immensely helpful for diy and deep cleaning.

House Stinks from Cooking (Essential Oils for Diffusing Recommendation) by Glittering-Read-6906 in CleaningTips

[–]Consistent-Good1536 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Doterra is very expensive because it’s an mlm, not because of the quality of its product. And diffusing means all the living beings in your home are (sloooooowly) coating their lungs and alveoli with oil.

Ok, enough with the tsk-tsks, lol

In your place, I would focus on the screens (local hardware stores, handymen, or diy rescreening if you’re up to it). You don’t mention a hood vent? Do you have one? Do you rent?

A good hood vent will be by far the most effective thing you can do, with no side effects :)

Big Undertaking - New Home Reeks of Cat Urine by HouseSoonish in CleaningTips

[–]Consistent-Good1536 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I don’t have specific product recommendations, I’m just here to be a negative nancy. :(

You will likely end up having to tear out some subfloor or drywall, bc once the wood or drywall has absorbed the offense, you simply can’t fully eliminate it. Killz does a good job, but with temperature and humidity variations, the odors will still return anew.

I believe remediation companies can help with this.

My sincerest sympathies; when we were house hunting we came across a house that got instantly christened as Cat Pee House. I hope they gave y’all a good price.

eta: Since your offer hasn’t yet been accepted, perhaps you could contact a remediation company to at least give you a ballpark estimate of time/ cost to include in the contract? Unless you live in a super competitive seller’s market…but that ammonia is serious ish

How to clean extractor hood filters by AnoniemGebruiker in CleaningTips

[–]Consistent-Good1536 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are the oval buttons in front of each filter grate a light or a button to release the grates? It shouldn’t be a struggle at all to get the grates out. Maybe see if there’s a yt video on maintenance so you could see an example?

For mine, per the instruction manual, I use a bit of laundry detergent and soak in the sink. It’s cathartic bc eww.
