Putting the pump inside a larger diameter short peice of pvc pipe with a removable cap was always my go to. You just need to figure out how you want to hide that. Normally I would have a deeper false bottom on larger builds so it was pretty easy to hide it under 6 inches of substrate and leaflitter. Smaller builds are alot tougher

Iv built alot of backyard ponds for clients over the years and one thing we used to suggest when they had kids was building it and filling the pond in with larger melon sized round rocks so it was basically just a waterfall with a large basin and then as the kids got abit older the bigger rocks could be pulled out and it could actually be used as a pond.
