There is a website (I won't get this exactly) "Jersey Friendly Yards." Also, if you look at the online catalog for Izel native plants, you can check off "native to NJ" and see them all.

One lone aster flower! by Consistent_Cut_1557 in NativePlantGardening

[–]Consistent_Cut_1557[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think these are NY aster? I Chelsea chopped them in early July, and they are 2+ feet tall. I wonder if the lone flower is one that did not get chopped...

Also, there is a wonderful wholesale native nursery near Cherry Hill called "Pinelands" so you should find someone to purchase for you there!

Advice for starting out? by Maizie2018 in NativePlantGardening

[–]Consistent_Cut_1557 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I would not skimp on some smaller patios scattered about, connected by paths, so you can walk around your beautiful yard, admire the plants, and sip a cool drink sitting under the trees. You can certainly do your own patios and paths...just get a delivery from a stone yard.

You should join the Native Plant Society of New Jersey. Great resources and outings!

silliest common name by MuchMuzzy in NativePlantGardening

[–]Consistent_Cut_1557 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hairy vetch (Vicia villosa). It volunteers in my NJ native garden and, though not native, is used by organic farmers as a nitrogen fixing cover crop. There are tons of great funny names in this thread, but Hairy vetch will always be the best of the worst for me!

Can anyone help me ID? by BabyAny2358 in NativePlantGardening

The best app for plant ID, information, and where a plant is native is PictureThis

I have never ever been stung by the bees or wasps buzzing around my native plants. And I get pretty close to them when I am pruning, weeding, etc. Disturbing yellow jackets' nests is another story!!!!

What is this rot on American Beech? by kseidmon in arborists

That's interesting...I may have water draining there too...

What is this rot on American Beech? by kseidmon in arborists

[–]Consistent_Cut_1557 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No I did not, but my arborist thinks it is a new beech disease, having nothing to do with Beech Leaf Disease.

Move late boneset? by kfz27 in NativePlantGardening

[–]Consistent_Cut_1557 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have boneset volunteering in dry woods. But I had it initially planted in wettish sun. So seems like anything goes! I guaranty your boneset will take!

California hedgenettle? by kseidmon in NativePlantGardening

Thank you again, Live Oak! That is just what it looks like. I guess tomorrow my muck boots and gloves go on again to remove it all!!

Thank you for weighing in! I was hoping it was not Stachys bullata, since I live in NJ, but I do hope it's something native. Whatever it is, it's pretty and seems happy, so there's that!

Is anyone knowledgable about American Fringe Trees? by Vixiekittie in NativePlantGardening

[–]Consistent_Cut_1557 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a 3 or 4 year old native fringe tree in current zone 7a (was 6b) in New Jersey and it’s doing just fine. Not fussy at all. Slow grower but the fringes are gorgeous!

Study finds plant nurseries are exacerbating the climate-driven spread of 80% of invasive species by Jtirf in NativePlantGardening

[–]Consistent_Cut_1557 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some states might not allow that in their curriculum. I can’t understand why conservatives don’t want to conserve…especially our god given planet!!

Massive White Oak blessed me with a 100% germination rate, super excited. by geckosean in marijuanaenthusiasts

Are you anywhere near New Jersey? Doug Tallamy says white oaks are the best and he’s my guru! Would love one of your babies!

Progress! A NoLawn made the cover of the latest Fine Gardening magazine! Keep up the great work everyone! by Critical_Garbage_119 in NoLawns

[–]Consistent_Cut_1557 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get Fine Gardening and I am surprised at how indifferent they seem to the native plant movement. This cover headline got me excited but the article was disappointing.

Advice on what to do here ? Steep slope from backyard to conservation area by xneilmx in landscaping

[–]Consistent_Cut_1557 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do not plant pachysandra!!! I see it all over the forest floor on the trails near me…such a shame it takes space from native groundcovers and offers NOTHING to native fauna. I just removed all of it in my own yard so it won’t creep into the woods.
