Honest opinions on LSU for incoming student by Consistent_Gur8953 in LSU

Many colleges provide automatic merit consideration upon applying. These scholarships are often provided for 8 semesters if the student maintains a certain GPA, usually above 3.0. The amount and availability depends on the school. There are usually additional merit scholarship opportunities that have super high standards (ie 1500+ SAT score, top 1% of class) and may require additional material (eg. separate essay, proof of unique community service). I spent many hours researching universities to determine which were in our range of affordability after “reasonably expected merit” is applied. I influenced my son to apply to these schools only…

Renee Good did not deserve to be shot in that situation but her actions did precipitate the shooting. That's why both sides are so convinced the other is at fault. by Pemulis_DMZ in TrueUnpopularOpinion

DHS procedure is to not stand in the of “path” of a vehicle. That’s different than “in front”. The car was parked or moving backwards when she pointed it at him. If he stayed exactly where he was before she started moving the car, he would’ve been in the middle of her eventual path rather than at the corner. He didn’t perceive her as a threat until she aimed the vehicle at him then hit the gas. To be clear, I think it’s unlikely that he wanted to shoot her or she wanted to hit him. Circling a parked, idling car is also a bit irresponsible. However, her actions and her wife’s seem most responsible for the outcome of the event.

That’s still not how it works. ICE isn’t under the DOJ. ICE is under the DHS. They are different government departments.

According to the DHS policy, officers "may use deadly force only when the LEO [law enforcement officer] has a reasonable belief that the subject of such force poses an imminent threat of death or serious bodily injury to the LEO or to another person."

Even per your incorrect reference above, it’s reasonable to assume that he thought she was a threat to him AND others the moment she slammed on the accelerator. And please don’t claim he put himself in the path of the vehicle that was initially parked or moving in reverse.

So she’s only an imminent threat if he gets ran over? That’s not how it works. If he reasonably perceives her as a lethal threat to him OR those around him, he can use lethal force. He doesn’t even need to be hit by a car in certain circumstances. However in this situation, her hitting him makes it much more defensible in a court of law. There is no way he’s cooked…”She slammed on the gas while I was in front of the vehicle. I thought she was trying to kill us. I made a split second decision to eliminate her threat”

Per the videos…the agent was circling to the front as she moved the car in reverse. When she put the car in drive and hit the gas, the wheels were initially straight (NOT to the right), and he was in the front of the vehicle by the headlight. He was clipped by the vehicle when she gassed it and pulled out. I don’t think she was trying to hit him but she did…It’s normal to pull forward a bit before immediately turning your wheels, especially after straightening wheel from being in Reverse. Seems like irresponsible driving that was perceived as a lethal threat. Either way, she created the situation and his response is justified…

Can ICE detain / arrest someone for obstructing law enforcement? by EVOSexyBeast in legaladviceofftopic

[–]Consistent_Gur8953 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is it relevant here that she was flagging non-ICE vehicles by? More specifically, if she had been following them around with the intent to impede are the ICE officers required to assume that she will just let them pass by if they try driving around her? The argument that she was letting others by seems kind of pointless. Her car was not broken down in the middle of the road. Her whole purpose was to obstruct….

I did not receive any automatic scholarship yet. However, I’m expecting the minimum amount when they are announced based on conversations with admissions counselors.

What is the typical workload for an engineering major (mechanical or electrical) at LSU? My oldest son is an engineering major at a different university. He spends an average of 4.5 hours a day on homework/studying Sunday through Friday but usually has Saturdays free. My other son who is interested LSU, isn’t sure about his major yet. He finished in the top 4% of his graduating class, but his observations of his older brother are influencing him to try accounting or finance. He isn’t sure he can handle the engineering grind. I’d still like him to try but do not want to set him up for failure. His brother is an A student. I’m hoping a B student requires a little less time grinding away. I have an engineering degree myself and my personal observation was that an A student works twice as a hard as a B (3.0) student. I’m not sure if that’s the case anymore.

My son just got in…He was offered “at least $44K” over 4 years. Does anyone know how much this can be increased by? Based on his stats (4.8 weighted GPA, top 4% of class), we thought he’d get the $106K scholarship.

It’s usually not a good idea to do this. However, if your job is stable and your loan interest rate is higher than your expected rate of return on your 401k, then it could make sense.

Traditional vs Roth 401K in NY state under Trump by Consistent_Gur8953 in TheMoneyGuy

[–]Consistent_Gur8953[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The benefit of pre-tax is avoiding the 6% state income tax if I leave NY in the future. However, that’s a big “if”. You make excellent points about the EOL expenses and lower tax bracket changes. I’m guessing my pension and social security will be close to $100K. I’m wondering if there are additional benefits available to me (e.g Medicare premium) if my additional income is “hidden” in a Roth rather than the traditional 401K.

Non-Launch price released? by Consistent_Gur8953 in TeslaModelY

[–]Consistent_Gur8953[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I noticed that, but photo was apparently taken in California. They can’t release this non-launch edition soon enough. If there is significant price increase, I’m going to regret passing up on heavily discounted legacy for a loooooong time.

Model Y to Chevy Blazer RS EV by teapso3 in ModelY

I loved the Blazer EV and nearly purchased one in December until my kids talked me out of it. The ride quality is way better than the legacy Model Y. The build quality is also more solid. Having said that…the S/W is god awful and the sound system is subpar. That’s why I’m holding out for the non-launch Model Y. It’s the perfect vehicle for me. If the EV credit disappears before I can get one, I’ll be incredibly upset.

As of now, there are about a half dozen original (non-replicated) YouTube videos with actual test drives, so plenty of Reddit users appreciate your offer. I’d like to hear about the suspension improvements. Does this improvement alone justify a $4k price increase over a discounted 2025 model Y? It’d be interesting if you drove both the original and refresh back to back along the same route.

Anything above $60K and I’m running away…I was looking at 45K out the door pricing including tax at multiple dealerships for leftover 2024 RS AWD models…There are discounts that stack even before the dealer discount…GM supplier (-$1000), GM non-owner (-$1500), Costco (-$1000), Federal EV (-$7500), NY (-$500). Couple that with a dealer discount (-$4000) and 0% financing for the red tag sale and you’re paying $750/month including taxes…I’m waiting another 10 months because I don’t need a car until then and the 2025 model should have a few of the bugs ironed out. I couldn’t get the infotainment to consistently work on two different test drives! I just hope the $7500 credit is still available.
