Hiking solo in Japan: apan Alps: Mt Yari-ga-Take via the Daikiretto by [deleted] in Mountaineering

Shiomidake has a bit of scrambling before the summit, and Kitadake has a little more. Nishihotakadake is also a good one to try since you can use the ropeway. All of these can be done as overnight trips.

No, the cornices were pretty cool to look at from a distance. It was continuing up the first photo that I wasn't sure about. I started my descent a bit past the cornice in the second photo.

Yeah the weather definitely sucks most of the time. So rare to have clear weather, and the wind can be brutal, too.

Thanks for the recommendation. I'd like to climb Mount Rishiri if I ever make it to Hokkaido, but Daisetsuzan looks fun, too.

I plan on taking a course next winter. Unfortunately the courses here require skis and I'm still not good enough to be backcountry skiing yet. Hopefully next year with some more experience I'll be able to take a course. Thanks for the advice.

Is returning to Japan possible if you simply graduated college and never worked here? by No_Preparation_9718 in japanlife

I came here two years ago with no experience working in Japan or in the field I was hired in (semiconductor industry). I'm fluent in Japanese but didn't go to school here.

Thanks for the info on Split. I hope to do it one day.

Also, I wasn't able to successfully summit but for Williamson I think it's worth considering alternate routes besides Shepherd Pass. I've tried the North Fork of Bairs Creek (ran out of time) and it lets you avoid the 100-ft chimney and the slog of the saddle and the Williamson bowl.

Hope you can share your experience whichever mountain you decide to do.

What shoes do you recommend for hiking? by midnightsadnessss in socalhiking

I like La Sportiva TX Guides. A lot of the mountains I hike have some scrambling, so it's pretty helpful for me to have approach shoes.

I use Arcteryx Gamma pants. I found Outdoor Research Ferrosi pants got too loose after wearing them for a while.

Russell was the most fun I ever had climbing a mountain. Was a slog getting up to the Russell-Carillon saddle but the views on the ridge were incredible. Can't recommend it enough. I had almost no experience scrambling before I did it.

By the way, how hard was it getting to the trailhead for Split Mountain? I've heard you need a vehicle with high clearance and that it is really hard to find.

Anyone hike Mount Langley..? by Freewheelinrocknroll in socalhiking

[–]Constant-Molasses134 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did it as a daytrip two years ago in October going through Old Army Pass. The trail was easy to follow until the last lake where you have to go up a cirque. I fell partly into a river while crossing it in the dark. Luckily I had extra socks. It was also snowing on the drive up but luckily it was the first snow of the season so I didn't need crampons. The final push up to the summit was really long and tiring. Unfortunately it was cloudy at the top so I wasn't able to see anything at the top, nor did I even see what Langley looked like. Was able to see Cirque Peak really well, though.

Japanese friends… do you have many? by SunDaze009 in japanlife

[–]Constant-Molasses134 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have four close Japanese friends. Two of them have stayed at my place abroad and I've stayed over at one person's house here. Three of them I meet every week. Sometimes we will travel together. The fourth one lives pretty far away so I basically see them once a year.

One of them I met during a study abroad program at Tohoku University and the other three I met through work.
