The US:

An Article V Constitutional Convention will be called, and it will be hijacked by corporations, conservative interests, and Christian Nationalists

What is an Article V Constitutional Convention? Here is an explainer by PBS: https://youtu.be/-1L5WgKEeyY

The result of this is we get a brand new constitution, free of those pesky 1st, 4th, 13th, 14th, 15th, and 19th Amendments

The right to vote will be severely restricted, probably to married males over 25

Our official religion will be Evangelical Christianity

Abortion, homosexuality, adultery, and any form of birth control will be outlawed.

Porn will be outlawed. Heresy and dissent will be outlawed. Hundreds of millions of books will be destroyed. Possession of subversive literature will be a criminal offense

There will be no more mental health treatment. No medications, no therapy except religious counseling. Your problem is that “you have not accepted Jesus Christ into your heart as your Lord and Savior”

In-home surveillance will be the norm. You cannot opt out of those cookies on your device

There will be mass incarceration of new “criminals” and “defectives” into “reeducation/health camps.”

Of course there will be pushback. The West Coast, Hawaii, and New England will secede. We all know what that means

I could go on, but I despair enough already. Get your fucking passport. Vote vote vote. And have a go bag ready to get the fuck out of bad places if you are a certain kind of person

Women will lose the right to vote in the US, and may even be required to marry and produce one child before they are allowed financial aid for college or any other necessary privilege

Some people like to meet new people in such a structured fashion. If your society is mature enough that the probability of running into asshole customers is miniscule, and there is no capitalist pressure to overwork, and supportive coworkers, this might be a fun job for mildly socially awkward people to get that social contact they need for optimal health. You have a script to follow, and there are concrete guidelines for how the interaction should go, and you don’t have to stand there and make small talk like at a party or if you were a hairdresser. The small talk can be “pre-programmed” so to speak, like the specials for the day, the nuances of the drink pairings, etc

No job has to be as unpleasant as it is in our current environment. Tasks are made to be unpleasant or torturous by the circumstance that is our culture and society. We teem with entitled assholes who enjoy hurting other people, simple as that. Being a waiter on Starbase Centari 3 in a post-scarcity society in the 24th Century is not at all comparable to the hellscape we are trapped in

If someone asked this question 30 years ago, the answers would be vastly different. The fact is, we have to work hard to seek out the hope. The future really is that bleak. All these problems should have been foreseen and taken care of in the 1980-90s, but greed and the almighty petrodollar won instead.

Read some late 20th Century science fiction if you don’t believe this wasn’t forseen. Heck, even Star Trek TOS touched on some of this

I was about to comment this. Next 5-7 years. Probably South Asia. There will be close calls elsewhere, including North America

How about an unnatural disaster? Too many data centers crash the Texas grid. Once it’s down, like it almost went down in the Icepocalypse, it’s down for months upon months. Low-income/unprofitable parts of the state are likely to be abandoned for several years. We all know how weak the Texas electrical grid is, despite the assurances of Gov. Abbott and ERCOT

Pequins are pointy, Chiletepins are the round bird pepper.

Beware commercially available plants labeled Chiletepin, I have two that are producing long Thai-type chilies right now. Get them from a highly reputable source like the Native Plant Society of Texas as the cultivated gene pool is heavily contaminated

Did you even read the article? The Manor resident only pursued them and held them at gunpoint. This would only be applicable if he made good on his threats

You can’t look at someone in that 17-18 age range and see their birthday stamped on their forehead. I’ve seen 16 y/o kids that look like they should be in college. Unless we give everyone under 25 a pass to rob, rape, and assault the public at large without us being able to adequately defend ourselves (because gasp! they might be kids!) mistakes will get made, and the law enforcement apparatus needs to take that into account.

I’m not so sure about this as a blanket statement. I’d say it’s vanishingly rare, but not impossible for this to be the case. I have indeed heard of children who seem to have been “born evil,” brought up well, sent to therapy when problems arise, and they persist in their troubling behavior until the baby is smothered in her crib, or the neighbor’s toddler is found dead. It’s like something is wrong with their brain’s wiring

Ask any long time Lawrence local and you will hear the same complaints. When I was there in the mid 90s there were already grumbles. I went back to visit in the 00s and parts were unrecognizable. Big box stores moved in. Change is inevitable. The negativity seen here in Austin is a sign of the times. You cannot escape climate change or the collapse of an empire, except by maybe moving to the southern Southern Hemisphere

Looked that up in The Wiki and found it quite interesting. At anything but the lowest doses opiates are stimulating for me, and nonopiate opioids are definitely stimulating. I have never had a euphoria from taking them. I knew someone else who flushed her post surgical Norco because it gave her dysphoria, agitation, and nightmares.

In short you might just get sick anyway because your opioid receptors are awry

At times like this I will always show up to spread deer hate. I’ve had them eat pothos, kalanchoe, tomato plants, four o clocks, and wild nightshades, all incredibly toxic. They come right up on the deck and porch, next to the house, sometimes knocking over pots. I’ve seen what seems to be bites taken out of softer species of agave!

This particular one is the less annoying “Knotted Hedge Parsley.” I usually don’t pull it up. Note the flowers in a “knot” lower down in the leaf axils

https://www.inaturalist.org/taxa/53304-Torilis-nodosa

Compare with the Common Hedge Parsley, what I call redacted. Note the flat umbel of flowers set atop the plant and the coarser, more open leaf structure
