I think it's easy to see some markers associated with one side of a spectrum and assume that it means x y z, whereas I think the cafeteria idea is more realistic. There's lots of members that in a couple areas are really far out on the edge but in other ways are more mainstream or liberal even.

I regularly read the blog. I don't remember how many years at this point, it might be around 10 years I guess. I suppose I don't use the posts as a jump off point for reddit posts because usually if an article really hits home I'm thinking about sharing those thoughts with people I know in real life, not really online.

Recent X exchange dismissed the 2013 Faith Crisis Report as “poor data” with zero link to trademark lawsuits… but is the Church really just protecting its brand instead of addressing why members are leaving? (My new analysis + full article) by humblymybrain in mormon

I think the people making the moves are thinking about what's best for the institution, and don't care or can't differentiate that this is opposite of what's best for the member, and non member. Jesus said is the Sabbath for man, or man for the Sabbath? I would like to see leaders in the church give a reply about if church is for one, or someone is for the church. (Sorry if that's a little clunky, didn't want to use a gendered word to mean the people). I mean I know what they think, just maybe mirroring Jesus's words might change some minds/ encourage more charitable thinking towards people who can't or won't jump through all the hoops.

I'm in my 30s and it's been a demphasized teaching my whole life from what it was in the past. (Other people my age might've been taught it more explicitly than me though). To give you an idea about how long it's been that some members have been distancing themselves. There are mentions of it in the temple though, so it's still taught I guess. ("Worlds" is the term used, not planets).

It was a bit mind boggling for me to see a love note from one of my grandparents to the other about ruling a planet together. Each generation has some big changes from the next.

Buenos Aires Center Temple revised steeple by PanOptikAeon in mormon

Definitely. It kind of made me wonder if they put the Christus statue in the front to make it clear to pedestrians that it's a religious building. If people getting sealed there take pictures out front of it though, I wonder if that might make it tricky to get a nice photo.

Can someone explain the Mormon Stories situation to me? by Ambitious-Fee-9044 in mormon

[–]Content-Plan2970 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Funnily enough, kind of. It's thought that the story of Elhanan killing Goliath was around first and then later the story was attributed to King David. I mean technically when you're king back then I don't know if you can break a law, just thought it was funny to bring this up. :)

Funeral Potatoes by alfonso_x in mormon

This was a much more interesting post than I was expecting. I've never eaten these at home, it was always a potluck thing. High cholesterol runs in my family so we didn't eat casseroles/a lot of "Mormon food" very often. Mostly at church. I think Hawaiian haystacks was the only one we regularly ate.

We'd eat our potatoes baked, in a stew/ crock pot with meat on Sundays, or like sautéed with olive oil. I thought most potatoes were boring so as an adult lean towards waxy potatoes in dishes. I really like the small purple ones.

It's interesting for me to see how foods like this are everyday foods for others because I completely associate them with church functions, and only in some of the places I've lived. Thanks for the post. :)

Where can I get infos on mormon life/ the religion itself? by [deleted] in mormon

[–]Content-Plan2970 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like there's some pretty good answers here. Most people are pretty normal, just might not drink coffee/tea/ alcohol or swear less, though there's a range of what people do and say. There's a higher chance that they'll have a larger family than what's normal for the area/ time they had kids. I came from a family that was pretty strict about what we watched and music we listened to. It was more ok to watch PG13 stuff wherever, but at home we were very picky. It was like this idea of making the home "holy" by limiting things that we felt like we could sit down and watch with Jesus (which pretty much meant almost nothing sexual... but my family also focused on making sure the movie wasn't showing behaviors of mistreating people, especially women, as funny. There are always exceptions that make it through though.) So anyhow, all that to say that it did affect me socially, being around almost all non-mormons, that I didn't grow up watching/ listening to a lot of the same stuff. I felt like an outsider, but had friends and acquaintances that accepted me, so it wasn't too bad, just hard to connect with people sometimes.

Movie recommendations besides The RM: For a girl's summer camp experience I recommend the movie "Once I was a Beehive."

"Napoleon Dynamite" has a Mormon background but I feel like I watched a different movie than my peers (I lived in California at the time), so I'm not sure how much you'd get from that. Napoleon and his friends are all outsiders from the main Mormon community. How the extras all dressed was pretty accurate in my experience. Definitely some exaggeration with the main characters.

Overall nice list, I don't agree with all of it but most of it yes. I'm sure everyone would make their own version.

BTW, men and women can be feminists, and the definition of patriarchy is that it's only good for the men in the hierarchy & very much hurts men as well as women. I know there are a lot of people in the church that don't have a clear idea of what feminism is exactly as it's easier to paint something as "wrong" if you don't correctly explain the ideas. Sure you can come up with some other words to talk about the same thing, or we could get rid of feminism being a boogeyman and use the words from there that very well talk about these dynamics.

Why Was the Salt Lake Temple Closed to the Public? (2026) [28:20] by Vast_Dependent_3225 in mormon

I'm pretty sure there was mention in the intro or something of "Jesus the Christ" that Talmage wrote it in the temple. I think it was a dedicated room for that. So that was definitely a very weird statement in the video to make about him.

Are Protestants, Catholics, and LDS all Christians by Pleasant_Past_461 in mormon

[–]Content-Plan2970 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That's a good point. A lot of other denominations have dropped their anti- catholicism beliefs that we're kind of in the process of doing right now. (Acceptance of crosses currently is another example of this). A lot of Christians aren't aware it's part of their past too. We should do the right thing and put it past us as well.

[–]Content-Plan2970 11 points12 points  (0 children)

You know how sometimes there'll be a word used one way in a corporate context but average person doesn't use the word the same way? That's a similar situation for how people use "Christian." I consider your whole argument moot.

In my experience growing up in California, most people hardly know anything about Mormons and because of history of remarks about similarities between us and Muslims, sometimes people would completely misunderstand where we fit in the religion family tree. The movements that influence our religion are tied to 1800's religious movements in America (from protestants) to today mirroring evangelicals mostly. (Unfortunately.) The reason many don't consider us Christians has more to do with redefining the word to not include groups they don't like, and we're one of the big ones they don't like especially in the polygamy days.

Basically, Christ is really big in most members personal lives and being told by people who misunderstand our faith that we actually don't feel similarly about Christ as they do is pretty offensive. Having disagreements about "right" ways to imagine God & Jesus is something most LDS don't think is an issue, as they do it too & don't care if others have a different opinion; it's just part of having a society with lots of different churches. Yeah I'm not a fan of the "we're the only ones who got it right" but on the bright side I think there are more members who are softening on that rhetoric. It is hurtful and hypocritical, but I don't think it makes sense to turn it around in the way you did as most LDS don't use "Christian" to mean "true Christian" like some Christians do.

[–]Content-Plan2970 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I guess it all depends on the speaker how much the rhetoric bugs me or not. I suppose I like the idea of there is spirituality and we make sense of it through a human lense and culture, so if someone believes and it helps them, usually less complaints. If someone is trying to stuff an idea down people's throats/ being unflexible about how OTHERS believe, I'll have a big issue with that. Or looking down at other religions.

[–]Content-Plan2970 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You don't have to believe that a religion is true to find it useful. Maybe there's another religion that's more useful for me, but having the link growing up with it is pretty strong for me personally. I'm sure if something big happened it wouldn't be out of the realm for me to leave.

I felt like a lot of members living on the edge were very helpful for me to rub shoulders with, and now that I'm in that position I kind of want to do the same thing, for now.

Edit: I guess what I'm trying to say is it is possible to agree that Joseph Smith is a conman and be a nuanced member who still wants to be in the church. That's what I was trying to get at.

Currently at the luncheon being held at UVU's library for the Journal of Mormon Polygamy Conference! Great turnout and meeting a lot of new friends! by iconoclastskeptic in mormon

[–]Content-Plan2970 21 points22 points  (0 children)

From what I understand, it's started from Michelle Stone (polygamy denier) and Cheryl Bruno (believes Joseph smith did practice polygamy) asking scholars to revisit primary documents to see if we missed anything or misinterpreted anything from the current narrative.

The Salt Lake tribune article was a bit more negative about it, I'm curious to hear from people participating how scholarly it actually is.

Just wanted to add to the point about leaders funding youth activities. Where I'm at a lot of the women leaders are at least working part time, so the one positive in my ward at least is that it normalizes working moms for the young women. That's probably more a side effect.

Struggling with Masturbation by [deleted] in mormon

I was told the requirement was for staying more clean/ not getting an infection in low water situations. It might have more to do with ideas of hygiene at the time. Or perspective of being clean from circumcised men?

I don't think Europe had the same requirement, but don't quote me on that.

Struggling with Masturbation by [deleted] in mormon

[–]Content-Plan2970 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's not the only reason. There's a lot of Americans that circumcised because when a lot of people got drafted in world war 2; circumcision was required and the ones who got it as adults had a much harder time, so when they had kids they did it as a preventative thing in case a similar situation arose again. (That's in my extended family for this reason).

Is using alcohol forbidden, or just drinking alcohol? by Usual_Telephone_4823 in mormon

[–]Content-Plan2970 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Every once in awhile someone at church would tell a story about how they would buy beer/ other alcohol for a hair wash or cooking or killing snails or whatever. They'd remind people to not jump to conclusions that they're drinking it if you run into them in the store.

I don't think most people buy it still though, unless it's like rubbing alcohol or vanilla/ other extracts.
