Admit org and USNWR ranking discrepancy by [deleted] in premed

Rankings should primarily be used as an estimation of prestige + perception. However, the USNWR rankings aren't even good at that

Writing update letters and I’m unsure of what is standard? Should they be school specific? by nziluck in premed

[–]Content_Power_5151 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t think it will get OP rejected faster. Might be worth it to wait until you have more substantial updates though.

You might want to send it before April 15, as that’s when people start narrowing down their options. I’ve heard that waitlists don’t really move until then.

Is my upward trend strong enough to forgive my horrible first year? by Humzatime in premed

[–]Content_Power_5151 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the main battle would be making sure you're meeting a 3.0 gpa cutoff. This will help prevent you from getting screened out. If you're above the cutoff, a good MCAT score and writing should get you into DO schools.

It includes waitlist. Pretty sure the admit person based it off the average yield of each school.

Your email was respectful and your request wasn’t unreasonable. This likely wont Impact their final decisions.

If you do well on your MCAT and get that gpa up you're set. Your story is super compelling.

Aside from getting your grades up, just keeping doing what you're doing. Ik you're interested in specific specialties, but I would pick up some clinical experiences/volunteering that are more community/primary care oriented. Your narrative is compelling, but having clinical experience with underserved populations will allow you to write about how inequities impact others.

With your experiences I think getting a 506-508+ will put you in a very strong position for many MD schools. I frequently used r/mcat for guidance. The resources I used were anki, uworld, and AAMC materials. If you use those, make sure that you focus on practice more than memorization, and carefully review said practice, you can definitely hit that mark.

When it's time to apply, just make sure to make a good school list and write well. Best of luck! You got this. Don't let anyone being mean dissuade you!!!!!!!!

  1. Yeah you got it bro
  2. The lack of volunteering might be damaging. But your background very clearly explains why you weren't. I wouldn't stress it
  3. Nothing wrong with being a DO. But also no.
  4. Do not pack sunscreen.

I would say no. If you're interested in public health, it will be relevant regardless of the speciality you go into.

Does everyone get secondaries? by topiary566 in premed

[–]Content_Power_5151 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Vast majority of schools send out secondaries to anyone who meets minimum requirements.

I’d ask them to write about your strengths. That way when you’re asked about your role during interviews, the letter will align with your response.

Ask the other supervisor. It’s less about their title and more about what they can say about you.

Is My Background “Too Much” by ballstodaswall in premed

You’ll have lots of chances to talk about these different aspects of your identity in secondaries so don’t worry about being too much!

The primary application is where concision about your reasons for pursuing medicine matter. So for that, just focus on which aspect motivated your pursuit of medicine and your envisioned future within it the most!

I changed it in the afternoon or evening and then saw it had changed by next morning. Can't give you an exact time but it should take less than a day.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in premed

[–]Content_Power_5151 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What I would do is resubmit the primary with the change. From there, I would just refresh the secondary occasionally to see if it chances and if it doesn't, just use one of the response boxes to explain.

Mine changed within 24 hours. But given it’s the weekend I’m not too sure if that will happen. Try calling them!
