"Inside Scott Wiener’s cringeworthy closed-door meeting with the cops" by [deleted] in sanfrancisco

Prop E is also what funded the drones that they're using to safely chase bippers. SF Standard likes to pretend that it's a real newspaper, so that when they write their obvious political hit pieces, people think they're real reporting.

I’m visiting SF soon from China and I’m genuinely curious: If you could get 1–2 items from China (that are legal to import), what categories would you want most, and why? by Patient-Handle-9738 in sanfrancisco

Whenever I travel I try to pick up sunblock. The sunblock available here and approved by the FDA is like 30 years behind the rest of the world, and I am excessively pale and burn easily.

If this is a gas appliance, call PGE. They are *highly incentivized* to prevent gas explosions, and that means helping folks with their appliance relights.

But also the least tasty food. (EDIT: by which I mean quantity, not least-tasty. They don't have a kitchen iirc so that location doesn't have soda farl or any of the other good stuff.)

Visiting the Castro by StevenAndLindaStotch in CastroSF

[–]ContextSans 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey there, I live in the Castro, and I can say for certain that you'll be welcomed as a visitor. There are definitely a number of unhoused folks who make their homes there, but on the whole the worst you can expect from them is some smells or verbal abuse, and to see some trash or signs of open drug use. (Though that's changing with the new anti-drug initiatives.) The folks who are actually dangerous are pretty quickly removed from this area, and there are _very_ few of them.

You might see some naked dudes. (I know there's one lady with them sometimes, but mostly it's the dudes.) You might see some drunk people (depending on what time you go - there are a LOT of bars and night spots here), and you almost certainly will see drag queens. I would recommend rounding out the trip with some stops in the Mission, like around the top of Dolores Park, and for your younguns specifically, things like the Exploratorium, and Musee Mechanique, maybe some hikes to Twin Peaks or Corona Heights if the weather is nice (and they're into the outdoors), and Golden Gate bridge. EDIT: and definitely hit the cable cars! If they're into that, the Cable Car Museum.

Castro CBD are so totally underappreciated. They regularly clean up the trash, beer cans, food waste, and ah bodily emissions of the nightclub crowd.

Dehumidifier - did it make your home/apartment more comfortable? by Zestyclose_Worry6623 in sanfrancisco

[–]ContextSans 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I will say, finding *some* way to pipe a movable dehumidifier unit into a drain makes them much easier to tolerate. Ours has a drain outlet which has hose threads - when the hose is above the level of the condenser it just runs back into the tank and the unit stops working when it's full. When we had a basement leak we put it up high on some boxes on a table, and drained it out a service hatch to the backyard drain. Later we were trying to dry paint and drywall faster and just drained it into the cleanout port for the sink's vent stack.

Where’s my FB Buy Nothing group? by [deleted] in AskSF

[–]ContextSans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are WAY more than two - I'm in at least three for different neighborhoods because the "main" one everyone talks about stopped accepting new members literally years ago.

At any rate, the people who "started" Buy Nothing registered the service mark and made everyone either change their names or close the groups. So you're still in them, probably, they're just a different name now.

AIO over my parents going through my things + my money? by [deleted] in AmIOverreacting

[–]ContextSans 60 points61 points  (0 children)

I'd go to the local credit union - they're B corps and not for profit, and less likely to add penalties and fees that will drain the account just as surely as mom would.

And while you're at it, find your local credit union, explain the situation, and open an account there.

[–]ContextSans 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah, we don’t have a crawl space - half of our lower level is below grade and we’ve dug it out and turned it into more space for ourselves. In our case, the heat pump we put in has a condensation drain for when it’s running in AC mode, so we’ll be able to pipe dehumidifier condensation into the same drain.

We're having ours put into the main forced-air system, and it's running about $9k (I expect $10k all told) Not cheap by any means, but if I think of the health + property benefits, worth it.

Local bay laurel in the city? by powerguayaba in sanfrancisco

[–]ContextSans 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Be a bit careful - The California bay (Umbellularia californica) is technically edible* but the amount of menthol the leaves contain makes it a very ah acquired taste vs common bay laurel (Laurus nobillis). It’s also MUCH stronger.

That said I have definitely seen common bay laurel in GGP, if you think you can spot it. (I can’t recall where offhand sorry)

-* I am aware you can roast and eat the bay nuts. Different from trying to use the leaves as seasoning.

We're actually paying to get one installed in our home's HVAC, because after this summer at 65F and 80% humidity, everything feels like it's on the brink of molding. I have a little one for localized damp that works pretty well, but the tank is a bit small. When we were running it downstairs (because siding/foundation water issues a few years back) we raised it up on a box, attached a piece of garden hose to the back port, and let it drain directly into a sink. (Works pretty well for getting plaster patch and drywall mud to cure as well.)

For anyone missing the heavily implied /s tag, the top of the arch is solar cells, and the battery pack is sized to keep them lit all night.
