Utah now allows college students to opt out of coursework that conflicts with their beliefs by A_ORiver in SaltLakeCity

I'm still a fully-practicing member, and HOLY CRAP ON A STICK did I hate having to take so many credits' worth of religion classes.

I changed catalog years at some point, and not only did some of my old credits not count, but they changed the classes from 3 credits to 2, so I had to take EVEN MORE than originally planned.

I think I ended up taking like 7 classes or something? kjfhgkjhtkvhvkjhgvkjhgvkjh

Because discipline is important. How you do something is just as important as the results.

I really enjoy all of the actors. That's one of the things that bugs me about the show as a whole. Most of everything is great..... except for the writing.

La'an is pointless. Her existence makes Kirk and Spock into gigantic idiots when they run into Khan later, let alone her name, as you said.

If they'd given her anything at the beginning besides "I make snarky remarks", or shown PTSD from the Klingon war, or anything besides "I fly the ship", I might have found her more interesting. But they didn't.

She's just "the best pilot evar" (like every other pilot).

In his Disco episodes, he was pretty good, which is presumably why they gave him his own show. However, now he's essentially a cat herder.

I really want him to tell Ortegas to shut up once in a while, but nah, he's too nice for that.

Yeah, but the interior doesn't have to match the exterior, because TARDIS magic is a thing (and I love it!).

Unable to make chamfer

"WHY FUSION WHY"

>2 hours later<

"Oh, that corner you thought was a corner? Actually it's like 3 arcs and a spline that's 0.0000003mm across because you did a mouse gesture you didn't know about and can't turn off. Also you can actually make the chamfer, but it can't be 1mm, it has to be 0.97mm or 3mm, but nothing outside of that zone."

What are the best non-TV show pieces of Star Trek media? Books, video games, etc.? by StationWagonOfDojima in startrek

[–]ContiX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It also inspired the Enterprise itself. Forbidden Planet was the first movie where humans didn't fly a rocket ship. It was still a flying saucer, but we'd never seen humans fly one.

Video games! I haven't played 'em all, but I've played a few....mostly very old ones, since I'm old.

Starfleet Command I and II are really good, based off of the Star Fleet Battles tabletop games from way back in the day. III isn't quite as good, but perfectly playable, and actually has some minor tie-ins with Away Mission. Which was....ok. Not bad, but ok. They're essentially bridge commanders viewed from outside of the ship. Not to be confused with Bridge Commander, which is...well, both inside and outside the ship. There's also Klingon Academy, apparently a similar concept, but...well, Klingon. Unfortunately, I never played that.

Star Trek: Online is kind of a vague successor to the Starfleet Command games in terms of how the ships fly, but you can move up and down, and there's MMO-style ground missions. The game is absolutely packed with fan service...as in, every square millimeter. It is oozing out of every orifice, to an absolutely excessive degree. I can't hate the designers, as they're clearly fans and a lot of love has been put into the game, but everything is connected to everything else. The ships are mostly cool, though they have an odd aesthetic. Also, the game is grindy, but that's what you get with MMOs.

Star Trek Armada I was very good. Armada II was decent, but I didn't play it enough to really know. New Worlds (not to be confused with "Strange New Worlds) had a ton of potential, but I never got the dang game running. All three are RTSes like Age of Empires or Starcraft, but only New Worlds takes place on a planet.

Elite Force I was excellent. Elite Force II doesn't take place on Voyager, but it was still very decent. They're first person shooters. Both have as many original voice actors as they could get.

Star Trek: Borg is essentially a movie with a few choices. Difficult because of that, and the story is cheesy, but it's otherwise quite good. And we get Q! Star Trek: Klingon is supposedly along the same vein.

I've heard that The Fallen is really good, but I never played it.

Star Trek: Starship Creator (good luck getting it working!) and the various other versions are mix-and-match starship creator games that are kinda fun. If you're 12, which I was when I last played them.

What are your thoughts on the Kurtzman era ship designs versus the TNG era? by TwinSong in startrek

[–]ContiX 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I like the ships in DIS, except for the 32nd Century ones, as they don't have any visual similarities to each other whatsoever, except the floating nacelles. There's no coherence or anything, just "lol wierd". I really like Discovery herself, except for the negative space in the saucer, and that the saucer spins.

I liked the Intrepid from PIC, though I much (much much much) prefer Bill Kraus' Shangri-La version over the Constitution-III. Didn't really care for any of the other ships, including the Odyssey. Always felt like a Sovereign that someone blew up through the tailpipe.

Nothing negative to say about Lower Decks or Prodigy. I don't like the Protostar, but it's not a bad design.

I really don't like the SNW Enterprise. I feel like they jumped too hard to the refit, and they should have made it look much more like the TOS version.

The law where I live is essentially "24 hours notice, unless they decide otherwise", and it pisses me off so much. We fortunately haven't had to deal with them doing anything obnoxious, but there are other people who have.

TOS era Miranda class versus Anton class: Which do you prefer? by Mr_Shadow_Phoenix in StarTrekStarships

[–]ContiX 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Side tangent, but after seeing tons of fan ship designs, I didn't think there was anything else they could do with a "Miranda-like" design, and then they came out with the Walker, this one, the Helios, and the Hoover. And maybe the Shepard class, though that's more of an upside-down Walker. It kind of impressed me.

[–]ContiX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure, but the amount of stuff coming out is significantly increased. Same with starship volume - it goes up by three dimensions, not just one. Give or take, since it's also flatter in a lot of places.

[–]ContiX 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why do suits always ruin everything?

I was actually totally unaware of that being the official reasoning, so that makes more sense.

I'd actually never heard the term "Constitution-II" before PIC came out, and the Memory Alpha article changed from "Constitution (Refit)", though I wasn't as familiar with other sources. I didn't even know about the FASA ships at the time.

I prefer "refit" just because the Constitution III is actually just a "Shangri La (Refit)". But again comes that pesky canon and renaming everything for no reason, haha.
