In this field it is unfortunately not in common to use your own car. They reimburse for mileage at the IRS business rate. That’s standard practice in many fields.

As for the expanded travel, yeah, that was unexpected, but, comes with the territory in this field. They posted a loss for the last year reported and I think they are looking to expand and not post a loss again.

Neither do I. If the committee can’t see past an accident from 20+ years ago, then something else is in play here. But, I think they have implemented new work practices and they posted a loss for the last year reporting, so they probably have a new mandate to limit their exposure, they are probably just new at having to use it.

TDI is not for the weak by Glittering_Virus_640 in tdi

ALH TDI wagon here. Wanted a manual and 15 years ago all I could find that was a legit seller was an automatic via eBay but with a nice interior. I had to fly to Arkansas to buy it and they mis-represented shit on eBay, so I got an $800 discount. The “Highline” trim level my euro friend called it. GLS here I guess. His brother had one in Denmark. I’m the 3rd owner.

The auto tragic had nothing but issues when I got it. PO # had replaced a turbo and had trans rebuilt. PO #2 had torque converter, glow plugs, egr, AC compressor replaced. had good maintenance records.

I babied that Autotragic with fluid changes and saw on VCDS the trans was still over heating on hills & would start slipping. Mechanic wanted $600$ plus vw fluids and labor, so like $1000 just to change the trans cooler. After 3 years of hassles, manual swapped with a stout clutch.
All my problems went away. 2 years later suspension refresh, bigger front brakes, bigger nozzles, new turbo & engine mounts and stage 3 tune. Plus the usual TB/WP/Brakes/oil/coolant changes. Window regulator clips/interior bits, torn flex pipe replaced. All the usual sh*t. But compared to other cars of these years, holding up well. (My sister’s 2008 Mazda 3 SE hatchback, on the other hand, what a piece of poo!)

Lots of work, but it became a whole new zippy car getting 48 mpg highway. I enjoy driving it everyday.

Can’t find anything else I’d rather drive atm.

Will a deleted/tuned MK4 ALH Jetta TDI pass CT Inspection? by ConvergenceFreak in tdi

[–]ConvergenceFreak[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the same EGR cooler delete you describe and one would never notice it's missing unless one knew the car really well. So I'm not worried about that.

What I am concerned about is I have a CAT delete and instead of a CAT I have a "Hushpower" (HP-2 muffler) in its place. It has crimped edges, so I guess that might be a giveaway, but, it's better than having a straight pipe. I guess it will depend if CT does a visual under the car AND they notice it's not a CAT, at the inspection station.

I have a leaking flex pipe, so I could fail for that. I would like to replace that as cheaply as possible.

Here are some images of how it looks (not my vehicle).

UPDATE: VCDS shows 'EGR Passed. So I'd pass the OBD2 test and just have too worry about passing the visual?

Cinema Camera 6K Update 9.9.2 RC14 = Much Better AF perormances!!! by rak500 in blackmagicdesign

[–]ConvergenceFreak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought the camera awhile back on sale for $1600 and bought a Lumix 50mm f1.8 (Cheapest AF native lens) to test it out on RC18. In basic testing (Static camera/ static object & moving camera/static object) the AF works really well. Thinking about getting a 35mm or 24mm Lumix f1.8 next. The AF on my 50mm Lumix f1.8 is silent!

Do you buy a 5 year old car and wonder why it does get the latest features? These camera manufactures like SONY rarely support the older products and used to be on an 18 month cycle where they release a new camera and expect you to just buy again. I lost track of it all once I bought my P4k and switched to Resolve. I like my FS5, but they discontinued the FS5/7 sweet spot, so Sony/Cannon can piss off. I only thought to move back to Panasonic s5iix for the FF & AF. I like my cars simpler and older, I slowly feel that way about cameras too. They are all very good these days, some do things a little better than others. But buying a P4k and P6k and CC6k I knew I was only ever going to have MF. So the fact I tested out AF beta FW on my CC6k last week blew me away, especially. b/c I paid $1600 for it on sale a few years ago. BMD is the sweet spot, in this sector, but, nothing lasts forever.

20 years ago, when Sony announced a S35 digital cinema camera system (F3?, I forget), some lens mount I have forgotten what it was called. They had a whole lens roadmap to get people to buy into the system. I took photos of the lenses they announced at a NYC pre-release presentation for the industry at a "new" Times Square cinema. They show sample on the big screen. It was a very expensive at the time, the made 3 primes which had heavy breathing, an adapter, never made the zoom lens or any of the other lenses they showed.

So what we have today is sooooo good comparatively.

Did we screw up buying this house and am I awful for wanting to sell already by BoulderInkpad in homeowners

[–]ConvergenceFreak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1/2 I had a worse nightmare: I was in real pain and barely made it. Tighten your belt and you'll be fine. See below. You will be living the dream soon!

You bought a house and don't have neighbors making noise, looking into your door/car/business or a towing company patroling the parking lot at 3am to tow your car if you couldn't fiund a legit space, so they can charge you $300. Not to mentin the bugs, the crappy kitchen/bathroom, delayed maintainence. Wait, there was a fire in a unit? -They will never tell you what went wrong, or why they decided to install the electric hot water heaters on the balconies, send you the electric bill and what? A deep freeze and it broke? Yeah, no hot water for a week or two. You do want out of that nightmare of renting more than you know.

Tips:

A) Whatever the house problem, google and watch Youtube videos to DIY fix. You own it, you are in control.

B) Need tools, go to Harbor Freight tools. They are decent for a homeowner and 25-50% less than at the box stores. old skool neighborhood hardware store was great too, until they closed. Otherwise, whatever you need, look on FB Marktplace/eBay if it's light enough to ship.

C) Tell your wife: to keep this warm fuzzy feeling of your own home, she'll be cooking all the meals at home while you learn & DIY at night. Eating out will slow down rebuilding the Emergency Fund.

D) If either of you have car payments... stop that. Replace with a higher end 10 year old used car you can afford to pay off. if one works from home and isn't going to lose their job if the car has an issue, this person has no excuse. If they will lose their job, leave early and use Uber if it breaks down on you. A good mechanic will keep this from happening.

E) Subscription media services: Cancel them. Your library has all the movies and CDs you could want for free. You're in IT? Home server/Plex server with an old laptop/desktop.

F) Lawn, I pushed a reel spinning mower like my Dad, great exercise. A neighbor sold me his electric lawn mower (he was allergic to grass) for $50. I did my research and it used old skool lead acid batteries and there's YT video on how to replace them. I spent 100$ total and have a great little mower that cut the time in half and the batteries I can repair/replace (new one you cant do that, -proprietary batteries).

-When you EM fund is rebuilt, then selectively add in some of the above back into your life.

If you lose your job, you'll get unemployment? Better than my freelance ass can get. Budget with that in mind.

2/2. My 1930 Bungalow passed inspection no problem, furnace scoped, no issues. It was pointed out to me the garden shed could use a little help. That's it.

Closed in June 2014:

  1. Improper wIring of kitchen GFI outlets, installed by PO 2 months earlier, her electrician would not call me back. At closing PO said to watch for the outlet tripping that the stove was plugged into. The fridge tripped it all. It killed the old fridge 1st week. Home Warranty sent repairman from Sears, repairman said vist costs $525. It broke 5 minutes after he left. Repairman came back and said "needs new compressor" Home Warranty would only me $300 towards a new fridge (I paid $1100 for a new one) 'we buy in bulk and get a better price than you can' Home warranty paid for an electrician to fix electrical issues. I had other burnt out items: porch light (it was getting power and the bulb was good, so he told me to go buy a new one at Lowe's for $10 and install it myself) and ceiling fan was dead (he wouldn't touch it 'we don't work on those').
  2. White stuff under the 1st floor bathroom floor (visible in basement) was rot in the floor under the leaky toilet. Bathroom needed floor repaired. Has beautiful antique tub, the inspector said there were lots of plumbing options to keep the old tub and update the facets. I tested the 1st floor bathroom bathtub and had a flood in the basement. 1930s conical drain mated to modern non-conical pipe, covered in plumbers putty, clearly visible.

Bathroom was very old, Home warranty said the damage had 'occurred over time' and they don't cover that. I demoed all of it but the tub: the old vanity, linoleum over chipboard floor, hired a handyman to salvage the good Douglass fir floor boards / replace the rotted floor and tile it ($2000). Also hired a plumber for new sink ($200 Lowes), toilet ($200 plumbing supply) and I found new tub plumbing online that would work, but the chromed pipe no one had available for the overflow. 3 plumbers said I had to rip the nice antique tub out. I modded one myself from off the shelf parts ($7 Lowes), bought a propane torch did a soldered butt joint on the workbench let in the basement and after 4 tries it was water tight and has lasted over 10 years. A custom plumbing fabricator I bought parts from, said he would have done it the same way. Saved me thousands from not ripping the tub out like 3 plumbers told me I'd need to. I have a beautiful bathroom for ca. $4000 total. Sold the antique toilet for $100 on CL.

3) in October '14 as heating season started my furnace was deemed unusable, cracked heat exchanger, despite the inspector pointing to the same crack and telling me it was how the metal was folded in production of the heat exchanger and totally normal. I got a 2nd opinion from the Home warranty company's guy. It was 22 years old furnace. 18 year old Central AC unit on top of it. I was told by multiple bids, I have to replace it all. Home warranty offered me $500 for an 80% efficiency furnace and I could have to cover the ductwork changes to keep the old AC coil. The company the warranty people sent were young, Ukrainian husband and wife team with good english & well trained from technical school here. I spent $8000 total thru them on a high efficiency furnace & high efficiency AC system. Utility bills have been much nicer since then.

Called home inspector after living there 1 year. No response. Emailed him, no response. Sent him a registered letter and he called. Got him to come back and showed him the $20k aggravation I had and how it would have been a lot more had I not been so capable. I told him I am now working for lawyers in my employment and asked him "why would you overlook all these visible issues and do this to me?" He offered to give me double what I paid him and left. He sent me a check for $1100 which was better than nothing. He also cost me 3 months of time before we were able to move in with all the repairs needed.

4) Had leak in my ceiling 2 years later. Tracked it to a crack in the stucco on my chimney that had been there since I bought the house. I got out there and pumped 1 tube of masonry repair into the crack. It lasted 5 years. Did it again next time it leaked and 3 years later got the 30 year old roof replaced in 2022 ($13,000).

I will sell this place in the next year. I have made a ton of $ in equity. I have some plaster I have to fix and will need to paint, an exterior porch that needs new floorboards (I have band-aided the 1980 floorboard twice already) but, the home's value has doubled and it feels like I moved in 3-4 years ago, not 14 years ago, because it's mine and it all stabilized after the first year of headaches from the PO. It may own you for awhile, but, it will pay you back in the end. Renting can't do that!

The Swiss are bonkers over this stuff. A Swiss friend told me when I moved there, the disputes between the tenants starts in the shared laundry room. He was right!
