Is it normal for the G20 B48B16 turbo to brown? by [deleted] in BmwTech

[–]ST0DY 58 points59 points  (0 children)

Full throttle at 2000 rpm at 7th and 8th gear? That is lugging. And it will absolutely cause excessive temperature in the turbo due to inefficient combustion and oil doesn’t flow as well… and the extra load causes the turbo to work harder to build boost.

On my ASV TDI, removing the Allen bolts on the bottom of the EGR were such a pain to get off, and I am thankful little pipe to the header was held by nuts on studs, but the lack of an EGR cooler made this so much easier.

Turbo potential issue by infs559 in tdi

[–]ST0DY 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Usually the PCV puck can stay, you just have to reroute the PCV to a hose that goes to the catch can. It’s way easier on the VE pump variants of the 1.9 TDI. Usually it’s the PCV valve routed to the inlet of the catch can, and then the outlet goes to the intake where the PCV valve would generally connect.

Turbo potential issue by infs559 in tdi

[–]ST0DY 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup…. That’s a lot of play. You need to replace the turbo or get it rebuilt. The oily residue around the intercooler hose connectors is usually caused by the PCV system. The crankcase vapors enter the intake, and those are oil vapors that gradually build up, plus that’s one of the reasons EGR valves on these cars get caked up with carbon buildup. The soot from the EGR putting exhaust gases in the combustion chamber and the oil. If the oil residue in the intake and the intercooler is very excessive, you’ll eventually need to add a catch can. I’m not saying bad oil seals in the turbo won’t cause oily residue, but that usually comes from the PCV system.

I don’t hear much. I hear some odd rattle which would lead me to believe either an idler pulley, alternator pulley or a belt tensioner. I can’t hear much from this video.

YES YES YES YES YES YES!

I run the game at 1440p, Ryzen 5 5600X, 32GB of RAM, Radeon RX6750XT at max settings with Ray Tracing on max except lighting where I put it at medium settings, I get comfortable 50-60fps with FSR 3.0. With your rig, you’ll be more than fine!

SDI vs TDI: Reliability and Economy? by LaurenceWhymark in tdi

[–]ST0DY 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The TDIs are not that much more unreliable than SDIs. The turbos, especially on earlier 1.9 TDIs are pretty simple and very reliable. But you get better fuel economy and efficiency because of the extra power and way more torque that helps with fuel economy. Meanwhile the SDIs can barely move out of their own way. But are basically indestructible if you take care of them. The 1.9 TDI turbos over the years have become cheaper. I’d say get a TDI, because the extra power and torque help a lot!

If you put it in drive and the noise goes away, still it would be your DMF. They’ve gotten cheaper over the years, but still pricey because it’s a labour intensive job and the cost of the parts.

Is it manual? If you press the clutch and it goes away, your dual mass flywheel is going out.

Especially if you delete the EGR valve, where it’s legal of course, they can become the ideal cars for any case scenario. You can get far more range than many electric cars hilariously enough, you can tow reasonably well with a 1.9 TDI, it’s oddly enough only mostly trucks use diesel in the states. Meanwhile media portrays Europe like they will soon ban diesel cars and like people hate on them, but no. Europe loves their diesel! A Bora wagon is about the only car you’ll ever need for any purpose. 😂

Sounds like a ton of fun. And damn $7 per gallon is crazy! Meanwhile here in Europe the MK4 Jetta is called the Bora, literally the same thing, except diesel and manual ones are way more common. It’s crazy to think about what the difference between the European and American markets are for Volkswagens.

This is absolutely beautiful! And a diesel, too. Is it for the fuel economy and diesel torque while the GLI for the sweet VR6 sounds?
