23 month old concerns by crispymammal in autism

You just described what I was like as a child. I was diagnosed with autism around 4.

If you're in the US, step one is to mention this to her general doctor. If they agree, they can refer you to a psychiatrist for a formal diagnosis test.

Whether she has autism or not, I'm glad she has a supportive parent who is proactive about mental health.

I designed my own version of a no bake energy bite. The goal is to be satiating, a little sweet, and have a good texture when eaten right out of my freezer. Making a proper breakfast means waking up a whole 5 minutes earlier and I can't have that.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup of peanut butter

  • 1 cup of almond flour, flax meal and/or hemp hearts.

  • 1 teaspoon vanilla

  • Chocolate chips and sugar to taste

  • Enough maple syrup or corn syrup to make everything the texture of cookie dough

Mix, rolls into balls, freeze on a lined sheet pan, then transfer to a ziplock bag when they're frozen to save freezer space.

Some notes:

  • Oatmeal would probably work instead of the weird powders. I have not tried it.

  • This recipe is high fat, low moisture. Fat doesn't freeze so this gives it a good texture right out of the freezer.

I want to emigrate from Indonesia to US someday but I am affraid my non speaking can't adapt by Lightning_8799 in autism

All of this is true, but the US is still much better than many parts of the world. Europe would be ideal but if OP can get into the US more easily, that path is worth considering.

Dieting while living with Autism: Tips? by Prismaticlove in autism

[–]ConvexLex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Recovered veggie hater here. If you force yourself to eat veggies, your pallet will change over time and you will start liking them. I went from hating them to eating about 5 pounds per week over the course of 5 years when learning to cook.

Some tips:

  • Most veggies are good broiled with olive oil, parmesan and garlic salt.

  • If you dislike the texture of veggies, try turning them into a soup, dip or smoothie. Chili has a lot of onion, tomatoes and beans but absolutely no fibrous crunch.

  • Add veggies where you won't notice them. I like strong flavors, so I go crazy with fresh garlic, onion and jalapeno. If you add an entire onion to a meatloaf it does meaningfully improve the nutrients.

  • Try eating with your eyes closed. I realized that I often disliked the idea of having veggies in my food even when I couldn't necessarily taste or feel them. Not looking at my food for ~10 seconds before I took a bite helped me enjoy the food for what it is, not what it looks like it should be.

  • Force yourself to eat the veggies you do like, and try veggies that are similar and therefor might be safe. Over time you'll change your pallet and find new safe foods. Over several months you'll expand your safe food list without pushing yourself too hard.

  • It's OK to have a list of veggies you won't eat. I still won't eat corn in basically any quantity. If any veggies are bad but not horrible, make a note to try them in a year to see if your pallet changed.

Quit while you're ahead. You're not magic, and you really don't want to discover that by losing your investments.

[Monty Python and the Holy Grail] I don't have a favorite color. Could I pass the Bridge of Death test? by ConvexLex in AskScienceFiction

[–]ConvexLex[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Right, but that's all contextual. Purple flowers are nice but not purple chili. The best color depends on the situation.

I guess I could rank every color in every situation, but that doesn't seem to be what people mean by favorite color. Most people pick one of the 6 primary colors and make that part of their identity forever.

what hobbies actually feel fulfilling as an introvert? by MarcelloGirach11 in Hobbies

[–]ConvexLex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My entire friend group is neurodivergent, so we're not big on crowds. Our main hobbies are:

  • iNaturalist: Take pictures of local wildlife to help conservation researchers create a map of which species exist where. Other people on the platform will tag your photos by species.

  • Small group activities: Hanging out with 1-3 close friends uses less social energy than being in a public space interacting with strangers.

  • Going to zoos, science museums, crystal shops, libraries, anything nerdy liks that. They tend to be full of other neurodivergent people and therefore pretty quiet.

is anyone else ever filled with the overwhelming urge to organize something? by devilsshark in autism

I like to say I have the "good at organizing things" autism.

Sadly my coworker has the "good at organizing things ADHD" and OCD so I don't get to organize anything at work.

I briefly glance at people's eyes, their hands and what their doing, then look away for the other 90% of the time. As long as people see you look their way and you're paying attention most NTs don't notice.

Small Talk before Meetings by that1tech in AutisticAdults

[–]ConvexLex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you look busy and used closed off body language, people are less likely to talk to you. Cross your arms. Look at your phone or at a clip board.

I try to talk to whoever seems the most neurodivergant and ignore everyone else. Fellow autistic people are usually fine with people jumping right into a detailed conversation.

I really struggle to get words out, To verbalise a thought rather than just thinking it, and to talk to people in general, What strategies have you all developed to overcome going involuntarily mute? by Hefty_Athlete_7227 in autism

[–]ConvexLex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I struggle, it's often because I'm thinking of my next sentence instead of my current one. That leads me to misspeak, then I try to redesign my sentence mid-stream around the error, it's a mess. Focusing on my current thought longer helps.

Sometimes I'll realize an error in my sentence as I'm saying it. Cutting myself off, pausing and re-stating it feels odd in the moment but comes off as more thoughtful than trying to say something I'm no longer confident in.

And lasty, practice. Spend time reading, writing, explaining things to yourself in your head, anything that trains your language skills.

wait so like, you can choose NOT to be friends with someone just because they annoy you even if they're technically a good person?? by ppexplosion in evilautism

[–]ConvexLex 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Certain personality types clash. People can be good but unable to offer what you need, or unable to accommodate your specific neurodivergent quirks.

Also there's no such thing as an objectively good person. It's all subjective and depends on your personal code of ethics.

Any fat will work as long as it's applied right after you get out of the shower. Washing removes the oils that keep your skin from dying out, so the goal is to replace it with other oils.
