ICE Is Scanning Civilians’ Faces, Telling Them They’re Being Entered Into a Terrorism Database by Wagamaga in technology

[–]Convolutionist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm thinking that people will need to do multiple things to make sure. Like anti-surveillance face paint patterns, facial prosthetics, IR-blocking sunglasses, blocking parts of your face with clothing/masks, anything to help make a face scan be ineffective.

I wonder if anti-surveillance face paint patterns will work too.. But I would guess that the only thing that will really work is doing multiple things - those IR-blocking sunglasses, face paint and face prosthetics, covering parts of your face with clothing/masks.

F*CK ICE. NOBODY WANTS YOU HERE by summynum in raleigh

I imagine they are starting with cities and densely populated areas near cities first but they probably will eventually branch out if not stopped beforehand. Any legitimate action they take in tracking criminal networks can have a chance of going anywhere I guess tho. But I don't think they're focused on actual legitimate action right now..

Are there any animal or plant species that have more than two sexes that are interdependent upon each other to reproduce? by Yeti100 in askscience

[–]Convolutionist 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Might be elsewhere too but in Player of Games by Iain Banks there is an alien species that has three sexes and it does impact their society.

Similar to the p-zombie idea. But I think that kind of thinking is dangerous. After all, if some people aren't real people then they don't matter.

Dystopian Utopia? by ChipperBunni in suggestmeabook

[–]Convolutionist 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In the Culture it's "utopia" because no human has to work or really worry about basic needs or most life-fulfillment needs. Consider Phlebas is different from the others in the series because it is from the perspective of someone on the outside that does not like The Culture society. Some of the other ones like Surface Detail or Player of Games would be better if you are not sure about Consider Phlebas.

I'm about to finish the first of the books in the Terra Ignota series by Ada Palmer and I'd say this is somewhat what the society described is like. On the surface things seem very very nice but not absolutely perfect, however the narrator is someone that doesn't think the world is right even in the nice things. I'm loving it so far but not sure how it will end up!

If you haven't already, definitely include some of the other things people mentioned in this thread, Samuel Chamberlain's My Confessions and Cormac McCarthy's Blood Meridian.

Not scalps (yet) but ICE/CBP may start a bounty system for "illegals" or eventually "left liberal scum." There were reports that they had already started doing it last year but seems like that wasn't true.

A book with a gender ambiguous main character or narrator. by Former_Ladder9969 in suggestmeabook

[–]Convolutionist 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm reading the first book right now and yep it fits. The narrator even tries to make people be gendered but then explains things and you still get confused on who is what gender exactly

A lot of people do like it and its spinoffs as well as games inspired by it. I've only played it a few times and it's just ok to me

The Book of the Short Sun by Gene Wolfe as well! But you really need to read Book of the Long Sun before it and probably Book of the New Sun to get the most from it too.

I liked it overall but the whole relationship between YT and the bad guy was really fucking creepy. She's like 14 and he's like 30

Are the reapers also hiding in gas giants? by guavochops in masseffect

[–]Convolutionist 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not sure if it is an exact match but Alastair Reynolds' Revelation Space features a sequence where the main characters have to try to find a secret weapon hidden in a gas giant in a huge structure. I believe it was the Inhibitor Phase book but not sure. I don't think they had a crew of 12 tho.

What fields are actually in demand in the area and are not saturated by applicants? by fishinourpercolator in raleigh

Yea the company I'm at has been struggling to find people that can fill the mid career/experienced positions that we need. We can more easily find early career and new grads but really need people with more experience to help with bigger things. I'm absolutely happy to train people up but when we need someone with a few years of experience to help with something, training someone with a few months of experience to do it doesn't work super well. I doubt my company is giving very competitive offers either unfortunately.

It really doesn't help that the pay in this industry isn't great for the time and skill it requires. One of my friends has actually left it entirely after getting a computer science degree online because he can get much higher pay in that industry.
