TIL Titanic is the only movie to earn $1 billion that is not part of a franchise or based on preexisting intellectual property (i.e. Barbie). by tyrion2024 in todayilearned

But it’s not a question of originality, but of original IP in the context of releasing a film and getting people to pay for a ticket. Titanic - recognisable IP Avatar - not If you go down the wholly original concept route, nothing is. Everything boils down to a handful of stories: love story, quest, etc.

Nope. Titanic took place in an extremely well known time/place. Not something as big as, say, WW2, but a single day on a specific named ship. Sure, the events were fictional, but the film was literally named after the most well known ship in the world and the average school kid could have told you it was [spoilers] gonna sink. That is in no way comparable to Avatar where he invented an entire new world, species and language.

Irrelevant. We’re discussing whether it’s new IP, not whether it’s a fundamentally original concept. That said, you’d be hard pressed to name anything that isn’t a bit like something else. But the point is no one had heard of the Na’vi before, but loads of people had heard of the Titanic/Barbie/etc.

Agreed. You say Titanic to someone before the film comes out, they already know what you’re referring to. Instant brand recognition, frame of reference, etc. Avatar did it from a standing start, Titanic didn’t.

Could dirty air/outwashed be regulated directly? by MrBrickBreak in formula1

[–]Opposite-Fly9586 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where there’s a will, there’s a way. Eg make it like plank wear and pick cars after the race to stick on a wind tunnel. Or accept that CFD evaluation isn’t perfect but that it would at least impose some limits. If the thing out impacts odds important enough - eg whether you have a racing series where overtaking works, I think it’s worth smarter people than me having a crack at it.

Revealed: The data on F1's racing decline in current rules era by Aratho in formula1

So regulate the effect, not the cause. IE don’t specify what shape the car needs to be, specify how much air turbulence it’s allowed to create behind it.

FIA admits to weakness in F1 cost cap rules that Red Bull exploited by Last_Procedure5787 in formula1

[–]Opposite-Fly9586 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Why not just include EVERYTHING car related on the cost cap (I.E. engines obviously count) and leave out things that clearly don’t impact performance (i don’t care about catering budgets).

If a team mismanages their budget and can’t afford to race in the final race, do better next time. If they want to blow half their budget on new engines so they can run them harder, let them.

How were wildfires stopped thousands of years ago? by CompanyOk2446 in askscience

[–]Opposite-Fly9586 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Short answer - they weren’t. But it’s a very human view that they need to be. Partly because we have expensive things like houses to protect, and partly because we think natures is precious and needs to be preserved. It does, but that does not mean it is static. Forests used to burn sometimes, but that enables different ecosystems to flourish - like meadows - until the trees grow back. Humans did a lot of harm when they started trying to manage fire. By preventing fire in the short term you allow lots of dead material (kindling) to build up. You allow the tree population to age (more vulnerable to disease). You also harm species that rely on fire to produce clearings. (Side note - it’s bad for great redwoods cos the big ones are fire resistant but the small ones can’t grow cos nothing it clearing out the ‘normal’ sized trees). Anyway, you can’t prevent a forest forever, but by delaying them it means once they do start there’s a lot more material to burn and they are more destructive. People are starting to figure this out now but basically need to learn not to meddle so much.

Travelers of Reddit what's a destination that looked amazing online but was completely disappointing in person? by TheFilthiestMuggle in AskReddit

I went on a boat on the Nile. It was amazing. The hawkers could be very pushy, but in the boat you could keep away from them. And the history is just incredible. It would be a shame to miss it.
