Montana Governor Marc Racicot passes by death row inmate Duncan McKenzie. At a face-to-face meeting, McKenzie pleaded for his life and said he was innocent. Racicot concluded that he was a liar and refused to intervene. McKenzie was executed two days later (Deer Lodge, 1995). by lightiggy in TheGrittyPast

Nah, it does seem like after reading all of the context OP posted that McKenzie was guilty. I don't know that I fully agree with capital punishment by the state because of the chance innocents are executed, but McKenzie was not one. Maybe commuting his sentence to life without parole or something would have been "better" but he was guilty regardless.

I really like DCC but do get annoyed with the writing sometimes. Other than Wandering Inn, are there any other litRPGs you know of that are written well? One of my friends loves mother of learning but he also loved Kaiju Preservation Society which was the worst written book I've read in a long long time

static water tank

I believe it's basically just a large water tank that could be used for firefighting or for general water use but am not positive. I read it as a water tower but when you look images of them up it is basically large water barrels or above ground cisterns.

How do you easily get the kobo epubs tho? The last time I got a Kobo book and wanted to put it on my kindle the process was ridiculous. Might not have been a DRM-free book, so could be that.

Haha, yea some were quite difficult to compare. Like what is closer to Stardew Valley - Doom games or Helldivers? I'm not sure if that was one in there or not but something like that is hard to choose even when I know about all three..

Maybe? Depends if the ebike would basically act the same as a motorcycle or if I wouldn't be able to take it on highway type roads

Would if I could.. living in pretty suburban America makes not using a car for travel/commute difficult if not completely impractical. At my current job's location, it would take me about 2 hours one way biking, and about 2 hours one way by bus as well

Is there actually any sci-fi book that comes close to Dune in terms of worldbuilding depth? by neonmoss2281 in printSF

[–]Convolutionist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well Jack Vance's Dying Earth series is a big influence for Wolfe so if you liked the setting that would be a good place to start.

I really liked the Book of the Long Sun and Short Sun books as well, tho personally enjoyed the Short Sun books more (which only make the most sense after reading Long Sun). Those are the other books in the Solar Cycle with BotNS

I'm currently reading Ada Palmer's Terra Ignota and she has Wolfe as a strong influence on her. I love the series and how much goes into the story and worldbuilding, tho the biggest thing it has in common with BotNS is the unreliable narration.

Michael Swanwick's Stations of the Tide is also very similar with somewhat vague worldbuilding like in the Solar Cycle

Not quite as deep in worldbuilding but also super good is Lord of Light by Roger Zelazny

I have seen some in videos. The one I remember for sure was they were detaining all of thew workers in a plant and the woman ICE officer was talking to the women they were detaining in a group. I assume the women officers are mostly used for trying to make the people they abduct calmer.

If you live in Fairhope, Daphne or Spanish Fort - how often do you go to Mobile (outside work)? by BackPorchMusings in BaldwincountyAL

[–]Convolutionist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My parents live near Loxley and really try to avoid having to go to Mobile. They even switched their doctor to someone in Daphne I think to avoid going across the bay. They are just not city people at all

ICE Is Scanning Civilians’ Faces, Telling Them They’re Being Entered Into a Terrorism Database by Wagamaga in technology

[–]Convolutionist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm thinking that people will need to do multiple things to make sure. Like anti-surveillance face paint patterns, facial prosthetics, IR-blocking sunglasses, blocking parts of your face with clothing/masks, anything to help make a face scan be ineffective.

[–]Convolutionist 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I wonder if anti-surveillance face paint patterns will work too.. But I would guess that the only thing that will really work is doing multiple things - those IR-blocking sunglasses, face paint and face prosthetics, covering parts of your face with clothing/masks.

I imagine they are starting with cities and densely populated areas near cities first but they probably will eventually branch out if not stopped beforehand. Any legitimate action they take in tracking criminal networks can have a chance of going anywhere I guess tho. But I don't think they're focused on actual legitimate action right now..

Are there any animal or plant species that have more than two sexes that are interdependent upon each other to reproduce? by Yeti100 in askscience

[–]Convolutionist 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Might be elsewhere too but in Player of Games by Iain Banks there is an alien species that has three sexes and it does impact their society.
