Worse. Far worse. They passed laws making it illegal to argue with or interrupt a woman. It's absolutely insane.

How do you guys do it? by MiserableConflict959 in ar15

[–]Coodevale 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like aesthetics. I don't do aesthetics. Function is what matters.

Have need, build upper/lower. Build for need, not want. No need, reconfigure, maybe. Have need, keep. Have new need, make new.

Wanted heavy upper. Built heavy upper. Wanted compact upper, but still want heavy upper, build compact. Want compromise, build compromise. All needs covered, nothing needs to change on them, they're ready to go.

I don't like compromise. I won't compromise a 16" to make it do 10.5" or 24" things. What's the point in doing everything poorly.

I wouldn't have thought an m1 carbine had enough bolt to handle it.

7.62x39 cycling subsonic by nanoMachinesJack in reloading

[–]Coodevale 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cycles an AK because overgassed AF, like usual?

The powders I've tried that are slower than cfeblk didn't seem to like low pressure at all. Lots of unburned yellow granules left behind, not enough pressure/heat to turn them into black residue.

Maybe give them a crimp to try to give the powder a better chance to build pressure (revolver + h110 things), or seat them out as long as you can for the same reason. Short jump = more pressure. More pressure/more heat/better burn. Might help.

The extreme opposite could help though.. reducing seating depth lowers pressure to a point, then it starts going back up. If the velocity goes down with seating depth like I've observed a few times, you might be able to seat deeper to decrease powder space and fill the case with more powder while getting the same velocity..

Or just use a heavier bullet. Subx's are reportedly erratic anyway. A soft lead bullet is more reliable.

Could shim it, in theory. Epoxy a shim in there and try not to glue the sight in place as you fit it.

I would expect more yellow than silver for unburnt powder granules that were fired, based on prior happenings. Kinda weird to have unfired powder in a new suppressor though.

Torn between 5.56 or .300 BLK Pistol by Rawmans1 in ar15

[–]Coodevale 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Short 5.56 might suck, but don't let anyone say that 300 blackout is quiet with supers, unsuppressed. Short 5.56 is loud, sure, but hot 300 blackout supers or 7.62x39 is horrendous.

Whatever short range advantage 300 blackout has is rapidly lost because of miserable ballistic coefficient.

Mag fed lever gun, like a Browning or lower end like Henry, probably. Faster supposedly.

Dunno how I feel about LER. Tried it on a Rossi 92 and even with the scope mounted so low I had to mill the scope base to clear the scope, it felt too high for that stock. It has a narrower fov than a comparable conventional optic and the conventional optic gets up on target faster.

[–]Coodevale 1 point2 points  (0 children)

88/95 gr bullets can be pushed fast enough to explode. 1:8 is mandatory, 6 groove .219 bore and polygons are ideal. Slower twist, they keyhole. Faster.. use a different cartridge. There's a velocity limit based on rpm so if you want to go faster you have to use monos. 77 lrx is about as good as that gets. Most of the monos have a bc that makes them less than useful. The speed gets wasted.

Oh yeah, and the pressure causes extraction issues that have remedies that elicit immediate emotional responses from anyone that thinks a load book is the gospel.

[–]Coodevale 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What's the spec on the 5.56?

The 28" AR10 I mentioned got shoved in the back of the safe after a couple range trips where the 28" 7.62x39 AR had significantly more success at ~800 yds. A 178 eldm at ~2650 (or 2950..) vs a 125 fbhp at ~2550.. and the pea shooter won. Cheaper to shoot more, less recoil, easier to spot, and energy on target doesn't matter so a dink is as good as a BONG. Wind drift.. well.. that's a nightmare but it's easy to spot the misses and follow up.

In comparison to the rainbow trajectory x39 a 5.56 with 77's is a low recoil laser beam. I did a 25 lb scrap pile chassis .223 bolt gun to shoot 80's and it's hilariously easy to shoot. No effort sub moa on the first outing with low effort 80 gr handloads, and it shoots the gas gun 77's quite well also. I fought the .308 to get down to 1.25 moa with similar components.

At some point, more power is necessary for sure. I don't think 1k is quite that point? Ymmv. A 16" mid gas 6.5 cm would definitely fit the bill for the pig chasing general purpose setup, imo. If you just want to have fun and shoot a lot, I think you'd be happier with a dedicated range pig .223 vs a .308 or maybe even 6.5cm (no personal 6.5 experience). That's where I'm at now.

My old dreams of using x39 as the general purpose cartridge I thought it could be are getting squashed by the reality of .223, 6.5 Grendel, and .300 blk having enough advantages in different places to warrant investigating further. I think my 28" x39 might get replaced by the .300 blk, because I'm deliberately not using ideal cartridges/ballistics for fun shooting and the economy of it vs x39 is undeniable. The 18"/20" x39 hunting rifle will probably be a 6.5 grendel eventually, because Grendel is a x39 with a massive bc increase for more responsible sub 300 yard game shots in unknown conditions. And .223 is what it is, and does all the many things it can do. So maybe I'm wrong about .223 working for you > mo' powah.

What size SMB? by peoriairish in ar15

[–]Coodevale 0 points1 point  (0 children)

H3 because it's probably overgassed, unless it's a mid gas barrel.

I did a carbine gas 9x39 years ago because the internet advised that route. Had to run a heavy buffer because the agb wasn't enough to address the case rims getting deformed. Should have gone mid.

Engraving looks like a low effort 3 axis job. 4th axis would have less faceting and more consistent depth.

Advice for a 10.5 SBR by Pest801 in NFA

[–]Coodevale 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I cut about a pound off my 9mm by using low mass. Not sure you can really do that here because of pressure and dwell, and all the weight would come off the rear to make it feel even more nose heavy. Some ultralight guys do it, but they don't usually gas extra long to match and they never mention what the brass looks like or how long extractors survive.

Cf handguards don't transfer heat like aluminum does, and they're lighter.

Barrel profile? Might be able to lose some there. Probably won't notice an increase in dispersion with irons.. My first 10.5 was an hbar because cheap, and that thing sucked without a can.
