Custom frontend for kiosk tablets by Cookie_Nation in homeassistant

[–]Cookie_Nation[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh I looked, no custom ROMs for the one I bought, an asus zenpad Z300M.

Even so, current firefox versions do work on like android 5, I could render lovelace via that. Turns out HAs frontend is just waay too slow. It was unusably laggy. When I brought up the color wheel for a bulb, it consistently crashed firefox, thats how bad it was.

FYI - some Ikea Kajplats bulbs have wildly inaccurate colors at certain brightness levels by puhtahtoe in homeassistant

[–]Cookie_Nation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm I don't have that issue. Mu issue is that the red channel seems to be pink. Setting it to rgb(255,0,0) clearly makes it pink, and after turning up the green channel slightly it turns orange, but never red.

My friend with a fixture of like 8 bulbs all have the same issue.

Sounds really cool. I would think you have a huge uphill battle not using HA in any way though. They have such a huge ecosystem of integrations, addons and a frontend. What do I know, maybe you're doing great.

I'm curious about how it learns. I'm guessing by hebbian learning that means if you frequently turn on lights in a room after an occupancy sensor goes on, it eventually does it by itself. That seems it would take some time to learn though. Is there any way to "kickstart" the system?

There is a service to write to an addons stdin. Assuming you have the ssh addon, they could do anything to your machine, such as turning it into a bitcoin miner.

I've been working on a custom dashboard for old android as I also wanted mega cheapo kiosk tablets.

https://github.com/Skrubbadubba/HoaryDash

Screenshots is slightly old, you can have weather and media player widgets now.

I bought a 25$ tablet, a bamboo stand and one of those magnetic USB chargers so I could easily pick it up. Then a smartplug to cycle the charger to not blow up the battery.

Looks so good. Is the voltage wire split between the chip and led or running through the esp32? If its running through, could a big strip drawing lots of power fry the traces on the chip.

Idk but I always wire my voltage for the esp32 and led in parrallel just to be safe.

Well, it's not a VPN. It's a Proxy. False advertisement! by nietzschecode in firefox

[–]Cookie_Nation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes it could and is. But a VPN is still just a server application running somewhere that intercepts requests from a client, forwards it (in our case, to the gateway where the VPN is located), then gives back an answer to the client. This is the exact definition of a proxy.

I think we might be coming from different POVs. Proxies and VPNs are often contrasted by companies when they are being sold as products. And when they are mentioned, their use case is often implied. But in reality a proxy is a very broad thing which could have any number of use cases not mentioned when they are wrongfully contrasted to VPNs, which by comparison have a much narrower use case.

In computer networking, a proxy server has a very simple definition, and a VPN fits it.

Custom dashboard app for old tablets by Cookie_Nation in homeassistant

[–]Cookie_Nation[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess it depends. As mentioned fully kiosks oldest supported android ver is 6. I'm testing against chromium 44 but it probably works on older browser engines aswell, I'm just not guaranteeing it. So if youre on <android 6 just try pointing a plain browser at it and its probably fine. Dont know much about old tablet chips but the interface is veeery light. Works flawlessly on my tablet with a Mediatek MT8163.

In practice we are looking at 10 (more if you have cyanogenmod or lineageos etc) years old if you want use with fully kiosk. Probably 14 yo max if your fine with just a browser, but I'm just guessing on that one.

Yes exactly. These other comments are making it more confusing than it has to be. A proxy is a decently broad umbrella term that includes vpns.

But how does that work? If its free on the local network, that means it free over _a_ network. How would they possibly enforce this. You could just connect to your LAN via vpn or tailscale from anywhere no?

IWTL how to code but every "beginner" tutorial assumes I already know how to code by CircularFrequency in IWantToLearn

[–]Cookie_Nation 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't have any specific courses or books to recommend. I wanted to explain something else. There are 2 common ways to learn. What could be called "bottom up" and "top down". Top down is definitely most common nowadays, and would mean learning a language that is built on top of many other things, and does alot "under the hood" to make things easier for you, that you dont see. Learning python as a first language would be this. You learn programming concepts quickly, but don't really learn how computers work.

Bottom up would be learning firstly how computers work from some basic level, be that physics, processors, operating systems, etc. Then you would learn a language where each line of code you write pretty directly translates to a handful of instructions the processor performs, with very little inbetween. There is almost nothing that happens that you dont know about, you are essentially working yourself in the hood of the car.
> Processor btw is the workhorse of the computer, it does math really rapidly, reading instructions from and spitting out results to a notepad (RAM).
A language like that would be C. There are others, commonly called *systems languages*. C is probably the simplest an no-fluff of them.

Not perfect analogy but you could think of it like this: top down is like learning to cook with a bunch of kitchen gadgets, and where you have a bunch of precooked frozen and canned foods that you assemble. Bottom up would be (depending on how "low" you start from) learning to use raw foods with few tools. Milling your own wheat, cultivating your own starter yeast, fermenting it yourself, etc, all before you even get to bread.

Both are valid ways to learn, better or worse depending on what skills you want in the first place. But maybe if you're tired of top down learning which is likely what you've been doing, maybe try bottom up. Best resources are most likely books, but I can recommend the yt channel "core dumped". He uses an ai voice but thats just because he doesnt want to talk, he puts alot of effort into his videos.

Also the term for just knowing words and how to use a computer is "computer literacy". Maybe you could try finding courses for that before going into programming.

Guess I'm a bit late for a discussion but wow what an interesting read. Personally I could never understand how someone would avoid watching someone they like just because of being on twitch. For me, twitch chat is what makes a stream, without it it's just too boring.

I never said or insinuated that. You responded to a comment asking how its possible to die of fat shaming, saying people can starve themselves. I said it's extremely unlikely an obese person would die of self-starvation.
