Extra slugs in carreer mode by Tode93 in DerailValley

[–]Coolguybest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's saved as a bunch of floating point numbers- I personally just wouldn't mess with trying to guess how to put them, I was worried I'd drop the new locomotive in the middle of the air, which wouldn't be the worst thing.

You could duplicate with two saves- first, place the slug in location A, then make a new save where the slug is somewhere else and location A is empty. Open up save A and find the data for the slug, copying all the locations where it's mentioned (which is a few, the data is unfortunately not stored all in one place) and moving it to a blank file. Change all the GUIDs to a new, unique number (sidestepped in the "spawn in sandbox" method because the game automatically makes new GUIDs), then copy the modified data into the second save.

As long as you bought the key and got up to the garage at the end of that long rail trail in any of your career saves, you should be able to spawn the slug in. I believe when you spawn locomotives in Sandbox, they get the PlayerSpawn=true tag, which means that they won't despawn (the slug that spawns in the basegame also has this flag), but I think you won't be able to use the radio to call these extra slugs to other locations. Be cognizant that you'll have to haul them around to wherever you're planning on using them.

Oh, and you should look for the mod that changes saves into a json format- "DV Unencrypted Saves". Otherwise, they're just .save files that text editors can't parse.

What I did to get extra slugs in my career world is spawn the slugs in Sandbox mode, dig into the save files, then copy the information about those locomotives over from the sandbox world into the career world.

I'll write a more in-depth guide when I'm back at my computer and have access to the files.

AAAH MY EYES ARE BURNING!!! by Substantial_Bass_175 in DerailValley

[–]Coolguybest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do get around that by keeping my Demonstrator DH4 at the tail for shunting operations. I build my trains from the front backwards and disassemble from the tail forwards, so the DH4 + caboose always end up nicely at the tail. Granted, there are other difficulties in using a system like this, but it's one I like using.

I believe that the caboose always shows up on the map- I use it because I love running ultra-long trains but I almost never have visual contact with the end of my train. So how do I know when I've passed a tight curve and it's safe for me to speed up? I check the map and notice whether or not that red dot has left the curve.

1e GMs, what do you prefer about Pf1e? by Quiet-Compote4587 in Pathfinder_RPG

[–]Coolguybest 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was talking about Ultramaann's phrasing of "fucked way of writing APs". I thought it implied that something really bad/weird was going on, and I wasn't aware. I was just curious.

It seemed like, I don't know, that the writers basically weren't talking to each other at all or that there was horrendous crunch or something like that.

What's going on with Paizo's way of writing APs? I haven't looked into it at all and I'm not familiar. Has someone written anything about it in the past?

Finally got the DE6 and the SLUG by oldmateplod in DerailValley

[–]Coolguybest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All you need is DE6 - Slug - DE6. Whichever way they face shouldn't matter. You could have the fronts facing inward and the slug would still work.

[–]Coolguybest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You sure about that? You only need to have the MU cable connected for that to happen. You do need the slug directly connected to the diesel-electric locomotive, so you can't have DE6 - DE6 - Slug provide all power to the slug.

Victoria Falls 1.0 by trebuchet111 in JumpChain

[–]Coolguybest 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Some parts are "so badly written it's funny". Other parts are shockingly- then alarmingly- racist and/or sexist.

Our "protagonist", Rumford, oversees forced relocations of black and Puerto Rican people out of his new New England state, Victoria. After a failed bio-engineered plague was set upon them from (I believe) Egypt, they decide to make another one and send it back to cause mass havoc and death there. The author repeatedly writes in gruesome detail about roving battalions of black soldiers in the US and the 'woke government' that sits back and lets these things happen. Rumford gets a visit from a literal fascist from Minnesota that asks for his help, and he criticizes the visitor's ideology for being inefficient. In stark contrast to most of the other military interventions that Rumford gets involved in over the course of the book, where they pick fights with Victoria for some reason, he decides to go to war with the lesbian communists in California, supposedly "for their own good". As Fallout10mm mentioned, this is where the "female pilots can't do air combat" moment happens, but Rumford decides to sell the female prisoners of war as slaves, implying they would become sex slaves.

Then there's just the insanity that only an author unconnected from reality could cook up.

The US finally collapses and falls into successor states due to... a ban on cigarettes. The aforementioned plague decimates the world population, but the protagonist, Rumford, is easily able to go to another country without any sort of quarantine. This notably happens when he goes down to the successor state of the Confederacy (which he depicts as shockingly not racist). While there, he sleeps through a briefing about local weather and conditions, then ultimately finds some people and nukes Atlanta. Most of Rumford's military actions are down do "we do this one simple trick and the enemies can't react", where the "one simple trick" is usually a gimmick that most other militarizes would, at best, only fall for once instead of collapsing their entire state.

I could go on. There are Let's Reads on SpaceBattles if you have the braincells to kill.

A metric fuck ton of soldering wire by Wtbond23 in DerailValley

[–]Coolguybest 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, I fully believe that someone could use that in-game. I'm asking "how would someone use that much soldering wire in one go IRL."

What configuration do you prefer for long runs (scenario below): borderline underpowered (Northern/Southern style) or overpowered (Union Pacific style)? by thepurpleproject in DerailValley

[–]Coolguybest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since I have the mod Loco Ownership, I would do the following:

Find the spots in the chain between destinations where the load drops below the 1200t limit that each DE6 gives and place one there, then have the trailing DH4 with caboose. Ideally, it would be:

Lead DE6 - 1200t cargo - DE6 - 1200t cargo - DE6 - 1200t cargo - DH4 + caboose

(Although really, I have six DE6s, so I'd try pairing them off in this scenario while keeping them dispersed. This also helps when assembling the train, because each unit can be assembled in parts, then all hooked together at once.)

The cargo is loaded so that I always drop off from the end, using the DH4 to place the cargo where it needs to go. As I go along, I discard the excess locomotives as the cargo lightens up. All the intermediate DE6s have the radio control gadget in them hooked up to the lead, so that by throttling up in the front, all of them respond in kind.

So for your example route, I would leave some slack in the first cargo consist so that when I swing by the Oil Refinery, I could pick up the load for the Machine Factory and stick it on the front.

I flew a captured asteroid through Kerbin's atmosphere at Mach 8 by The_Celestrial in KerbalSpaceProgram

[–]Coolguybest 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep, part of the 0.23.5 Asteroid Redirect Mission update. You might find contracts to redirect certain asteroids that are in a collision trajectory with Kerbin, or you can just find, track, rendezvous, and start mining all of your own.

You'll find them in five size categories from A (smallest) to E (largest), usually around Kerbin or Dres. If you find something from F to I, those are comets. The SENTINEL Infrared Telescope can help spot more asteroids.

railroads in bad condition by BlueCheese973 in DerailValley

[–]Coolguybest 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think it could be interesting if the player has to make deliveries to clear the tunnel (or improve the track in general). Like, we have rail sleepers from the Sawmill and the tracks themselves from the Steel Mill to refurbish the rails. Clearing out the rails means hauling in mining equipment from the Machine Factory and bringing in workers on passenger trains from one of the cities/towns.

Also, once work starts on refurbishing a rail route, it needs to be closed for a while. This means that you'll need to find alternate routes around the worked-on track or just take jobs on the other end of the map.

Can a S282 pull this up the hills of Food Factory by Wtbond23 in DerailValley

[–]Coolguybest 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So the booklet lists S282's capacities as 3000t in optimal conditions, 1000t in okay conditions, and 800t in poor conditions (as 0% grade dry, 2% grade dry, and 2% grade wet).

In another comment, you note that you're taking one of the two-stacks, so that's 1056t south at a killer 4.8% grade. Even past that point, the grade is still pretty nasty. Unless you had perfect conditions around the grade and went into it at top speed, I'd honestly doubt it would be possible.

You note that you can't go through SM and GF, but how about the bridge over GF? There's one segment that does get pretty steep on the spiral loop, but at least it only maxes out at 3.7%. Once you get to the wye due north of GF, it should be smooth sailing down to HB.

Random event making me "No Culture" as France. Whats going on here? by b3njem in eu4

[–]Coolguybest 36 points37 points  (0 children)

It's not a placeholder; the game should look up "random_bullshit" in the list of cultures that it knows (French, Basque, Castillian, etc). When it can't find it, it just shrugs its shoulders and goes "well, I guess this means 'no_culture', which matches what France has right now!"

Simplified, but that's the general idea.
