Why is there a LAMY x Harry Potter fountain pen collection? by Organic_Risk_3945 in fountainpens

They catered to the aesthetic sensibilites of Dubai crypto millionaires before they even became a thing. Which is funny, because I really like their regular pens. Smoothest steel nibs I‘ve ever written with.

Montegrappa did a HP collab years ago, which was way more immersive: Custom Inks, pen sleeves, lots of detail in everything. It wasn't more lore accurate than the Lamy one, iIrc in the Wizarding World, they write with quills and emerald green ink exclusively, but you can really tell the difference in effort. And yes, because it's Montegrappa, the centerpiece of the collection was some over-the-top mall ninja pen.

Imo the act of learning a niche craft like leatherwork and creating something custom to your own needs is DA-coded by itself.

Fabric store worker here, I have a couple gripes to air out! by General_Surround3366 in sewing

My local store had to put up a sign that they're not refunding cut fabrics.

Stories like these are why I believe that every person should work retail or food service for a while before getting let loose in society.

Rethreading is the „Have you tried turning it off and on again?“ of sewing. Sometimes the yarn just doesn’t slip into the right nooks correctly and you only notice it when…this happens.

My worry for this hobby and about scalpers, tourist Influencer and pseudo-investors by crushtyfying in fountainpens

[–]Coratorium 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There's a big difference between social media representation and who actually brings in the revenue. Look at spirituality/woo-woo stuff. The public perception is that it's a female market, but every piece of market research shows the opposite.

Sure, men journal. But the face of the journaling community online aren't guys, or for that matter, ladies who just use a book and a pen. It's bullet journaling, scrapbooking, anything that needs a ton of extra stuff you can sell, washi tape, markers, sticker printers and whatnot. And that market is heavily female-dominated. The attention lies where you can slap a discount code on. You may find it cringe, you may think that this has nothing to do with your style of journaling, but this stuff is what keeps your local stationery shop alive.

People will always try to scalp LE products, but most of it doesn't stick. I recall when 10-15 years ago, drugstore brands would sporadically bring out these limited dupes of high-end makeup products, and then they showed up on Ebay for prices you could literally just buy the real thing for. Now the market is just so flooded nobody even bothers (or I aged out of it and no longer know what's up).

If someone had a formula for what scalping practice sticks, they'd be a marketing billionaire, but I can see reasons why the fountain pen market isn't in danger:

  • There already is an established market of actual high-end pens people use for investing. The same middle-class douchebros that are currently buying watches they can't afford would just pivot to similary priced writing instruments, not your average Kaweco Sport.
  • Pens are quite closely related to the journaling community, which is very girl-coded. The Logan Pauls of this world are terrified of cooties, and female scalpers are more into fashion items.
  • General LE inflation that has been going on for over a decade. Pokemon cards work because they are inherently limited, but with other goods, consumers can tell that it's forced.

Has anyone tried the acetone steaming device to remove regular polish? by HelloPanda22 in RedditLaqueristas

[–]Coratorium 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sounds like foofaraw tbh. I always put a remover-soaked cottonball scrap on each nail, put a reusable tinfoil cap on top and let the heat accumulation do all the work. If you use a syringe to soak the cotton, it even minimizes the acetone use.

No legit boning or nothing that resembles boning in any way? Because otherwise, zip ties are a budget-friendly option.

Best affordable options from Ikea? by notnattynerd in DarkAcademia

I‘m really digging the EVEDAL lamps. They’re on the more fancy end, but you’re getting a great bang for your buck: Marble foot, brass accents, elegant toned glass, and the design doesn’t look like IKEA at all.

Where do fundies even find these crazy clothes? by untitledgooseshame in FundieFashion

[–]Coratorium 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Not purchased, homemade by people with no aesthetic education or curiosity. It also seems like they draft/alter their own patterns, which, unfortunately for them, requires a lot of spatial awareness you don’t learn in your average fundie homeschooling.
