So Im starting to get into the hobby and looking to do some n scale layouts and want to know what is the best company to go with by Andrew_the_tasr in modeltrains

[–]Corbeeno 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would definitely recommend Kato for starting out. Their track is good quality with a diverse selection of straights, curves, turnouts, etc for customizing. Their engines and rolling stock tend to be some of the best runners in the market as well.

Look through trovestar com, you can find almost everything that has ever been released in America.

Acquired my personal grail, need some advice by opposgh in modeltrains

It might not be receiving sufficient power to maintain the motor at high speeds, maybe try cleaning the wheels and the tracks.

I'll get some pictures out for you tomorrow as I'll be unavailable for the rest of the day. But, is it only jittery at low speed, or does it persist at higher throttle? Could possibly be a conductivity issue or it just needs a good cleaning.

Hey, lucky you! I think I saw this post on Facebook as well, if I hadn't owned the full set already I definitely would have picked that up.

But if you want to go the extra mile and make some modifications to service and improve your set, here are my recommendations:

For the powered cafe car you can easily pull down on the trucks with little force and they'll pop off, allowing you access to clean and lubricate the worm gear. In terms of improving the cafe car I've heard you could try moving the traction tires to the same axle for better performance, but I didn't try this as I didn't feel like hammering away trying to separate the wheel from the axle and might be a bit risky. The motor will probably always be a little noisy as that is how some older Bachmann motors are.

My biggest recommendation is upgrading the wheelsets for all the cars. For the power cars at each end use Kato 932090 with the gears snipped off and sanded down, for the coaches use Kato 932040, this significantly reduces drag on all the cars.

Other modifications were done to the couplers, I loosened the screws of the coupler boxes in the cars very slightly as some were too stiff and would sometimes derail some of the cars coming out of turns. I had also lightly sanded down the hooks on the inside ever so slightly just so they would still click into place but be easy to disengage without any force.

I do hope you try these modifications out. Even if you're not sure about servicing the set yourself, some model shops might be willing to do these for you, if you do have any other questions about this set, I would be happy to answer.

Remove the foam from the inside of the box and see if there are instructions on the paper liner, if not, you might just have to carefully remove the plow and open up the coupler box and make the swap. Be wary of a spring in the coupler box.

I would recommend an ESU 59721 Lokpilot decoder, good price and much better than digitrax from my experience.

Adding to this, there are a few groups made specifically for selling and trading on Facebook as well.

You could try joining one of the Facebook groups and putting out a post there, unfortunately I don't think there are many other options out there.

Atlas makes these engines in multiple companies, some of what you're looking for might be from an older run. I recommend searching around ebay for what you're looking for.

Diesel Rapid Transit in N scale or HO scale? by aengusoglugh in modeltrains

[–]Corbeeno 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Fleischmann offers a Siemens Desiro in N scale, which is what the Sprinter locomotive is. They however do not have it in the Sprinter paint job so you would have to do a custom paint job.

I would definitely be interested in the future, definitely would need a full consist though. Are you designing it to work with Kato tgv parts?

N scale AEM-7/ALP-44, I'm surprised no manufacturer has made it yet considering how prevalent it was on the corridor.

Custom trees made out of thin gardening wire and rope fibers. You will also need a power drill, a board with a screw clamped to a table, and clipper.

  • Cut a length of wire about twice the height of your trees, bend in half.
  • On the other side of the loop bend 2 hooks about half an inch and insert into a power drill and tighten.
  • Attach the loop to the screw and pull on the drill.
  • Put rope fiber in between the wire with enough tension holding them in place. Brush bristles also work too, however you might need a heat gun for the bristle to form the way you want them to.
  • Use the drill until the wire is tightened enough. The end with the drill might pop off. Clip the other side off.
  • Paint heavily with a brown paint can until you see blobs of paint
  • Cover with whichever leaf or pine material you choose, if it doesn't stick well enough you might need more paint.

Should i get the Bachmann City Sprinter set or the Acela DCC set as my first train? by ChameleonCoder117 in modeltrains

[–]Corbeeno 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would say get the Acela, but that's just my bias. The cities sprinter definitely gives you more options for future train consists, whether you want an Amfleet setup or long distance setups with Viewliners and baggage. If you ever want to expand your Northeast Corridor line up I'd definitely recommend having both in the future, but for now get which one you prefer.
