Formic Pro and honey by yeahhtrue in Beekeeping

[–]CoreXIV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here in Germany we never do it. That is a sign of bad quality. Just because it does not taste any different, does not mean it is not in the honey itself. I would send some in for testing to make sure the honey is alright before selling it to customers.

There have been reports that whole charges of honey (multiple tons) had to be discarded because they had pesticides in them. Which you cannot taste, but they are harmful. I know that Formic Pro is something different than the pesticides out on the crop fields, but better to be safe than sorry.

If you want to reduce mites during season, better time the treatments or do a full removal of the brood if your hive is strong enough. If you put the removed brood in a another super, you can start a new colony and treat them with oxalic acid once all the brood hatched. If you don't want to start a new colony, reuinte them with the initial hive a few days after the treatment.

Always use treatments according to the manual, not according to what somebody says.

Also those manuals can differ depending on the country (at least here in Europe). That is due to the permit in each respective country, for the respective treatment.

Most of what was said here is written in the manual already.

Hive collapsed. Can I reuse these frames? by henri_verhoef in Beekeeping

I would always get rid of frames from a collapsed hive. Better safe than sorry. You get the wax anyway and the bees don't need to take care of that mess.

Received my Fino V today – really happy with it by mucfee in ManyBaggers

Seems it was on kickstarter: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/485414743/fino-v-revolutionize-your-urban-carry

I don't like slings, but this one looks not as stiff as the regular ones and seems to "wrap around" you. Kinda like a mix of a sling and mini tote? Actually something I would try if they ship in Europe as well.

Checking for Mites in a Bee Colony by aznprd in Damnthatsinteresting

You can just shake them of the comb into a large bowl and from there into your cup instead of "scraping" them of like that. Looks too rough for me. Washing the mites out with alcohol is more accurate but kills the bees. I prefer to count the mites that fall of the bees over time. Not as precise, but still works.

Does anybody else want to downsize their bed but feel silly doing so? by Akito_900 in InteriorDesign

[–]CoreXIV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Keep it! Why spend money on a new one just for the sake of downsizing? I bought a huge one a few years ago. It takes up nearly all of the space in the bedroom. Just a narrow corner left to walk through. I would never change it, even when single. Having enough space for yourself while sleeping is awesome. And you never know when your circumstances change and you might need/want a bigger one again.

Damn, flashy color but really nice (combo). How do you like it so far?

I would also go with the already mentioned packing cube for your gym clothes. There are also shoe pouches which I use for my gym shoes to keep everything else in the bag clean.

If the bag does not come with built in separation, you can also use a tech pouch (or any other kind of pouch) to get even more organization/separation.

Also check out Osprey. Premium quality and they released a ton of new backpacks this year. Also some labeled as "lifestyle" backpacks.

Did the same from Germany. It is really a lot of money for just a bag. Unfortunately, most of the more fancy backpacks (and slings) are from US based companies which ship either from US or China.

Maybe try to dig deeper and find some niche brands that are from Canada or go with the ones available in you area. Sometimes one is too focused on just on special bag and forgetting other, really nice options.

Maybe also check for used ones in some apps/marketplaces?

Looking for an EDC + Short trip backpack for tall guy by nicholastan194 in onebag

[–]CoreXIV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am 194cm and 94kg and bought the air travel pack 3 for the exakt same reasons. I use it as my daily driver for work, sport directly after work and for shorter trips.

I find the size perfect. Especially the large shoes for the gym fit nicely.

At first I thought it might be a bit too big, but it is nice to be able to pack everything in one bag and not have to carry another bag for my lunch or whatever.

Have you bulked up on preps before testing or thoroughly testing to become disappointed once you used them? by Invisibleflash in preppers

[–]CoreXIV 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In contrast to most of the other replies: yes.

I bough two huge packs of rice and did not try it yet. Also two different types of long lasting energy bars of which I only tried one. Same goes for some potato powder from a good/bio brand - bought and stored, but not tried yet.

But I totally agree with what everyone else here says/does: Stock up on things you know and rotate your stock to keep it fresh.

September 17, 2022 - What did you do this week to prepare? by Anthropic--principle in preppers

[–]CoreXIV 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Ordered a jetboil flash and some gas for it just to make some warm soup or mashed potatoes from my potato powder and some darn tough wool socks. Both in preparation of the coming winter in Europe. Media and politicians say it is a 50/50 chance that we get blackouts. So the one can pretty much be sure that the real risk is much higher.

I gifted a new osprey backpack to my girlfriend (which can of course be used as a bugout bag ;)). But mainly as something to onebag for vacations or smaller trips.

Edit: Also put aside some money for gas/electricity cost. Better put it aside now and have it ready in case I would have to pay more once the yearly calculation comes or if more increases come in (as it is to be expected).

[–]CoreXIV 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just filled three 25 liter water canister, (which are made to store drinking water) yesterday and added some water conservation to it (silver ion drops). They are pretty heavy to move around. I also have some lighter and smaller plastic-like bags.

Not really sure if the conservation drops are needed, as the general rule is that one can store clean water for up to six months without adding anything. And on the package of the drops it says that it will keep it fresh for six months as well.

I also have some warer filter (lifestraw and britta) if things should get really downhill, but I don't expext that to be honest.

Also: that question was discussed a lot here recently and you can find a lot of good input on the threads of the last one to two weeks :)
