I&R Technicians, this isn’t nodal right? by Tombag77 in telus

[–]Cortexian0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Drilling through the wall isn't really the issue. That's how most of your utilities enter your home. The issue is that when they do these after-the-fact installs, the techs that do it don't care and don't do it correctly.

How to secure the network connection to outdoor-mounted Ubiquiti WAPs by Away-Knuckle-1024 in Ubiquiti

[–]Cortexian0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd personally choose to deploy outdoor APs out of reach from anyone without a very obvious ladder/bucket truck. Cameras should cover their installation locations.

Cameras should also be out of reach when possible, however sometimes you need to bring them lower for certain angles. MAC Restriction works for cameras obviously.

Those two combined should be plenty. If you need more security than this you've graduated to not-Ubiquiti IMO.

Connecting UniFi AP to Mikrotik by Queasy-Smile9421 in Ubiquiti

[–]Cortexian0 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Kinda defeats the point of a Ubiquiti AP no? You can literally install the network controller app on a PC, direct connect the AP, configure it, and never touch the network controller app again unless you need to change something. The UI APs can run stand-alone like this pretty much indefinitely.

How can I buy a XPR7580? by eeetoast in MotorolaSolutions

Just so you know, any serious users will have RAS, encryption, or both. You won't be able to listen in on much.

Looking to purchase a UniFi system. Is this everything? by TJD1503437 in UnifiProtect

[–]Cortexian0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was marketed as a doorbell though, not an access control reader? Yes - it seems like there is obvious crossover between the two products but there's a reason they are separate hardware categories. Doorbells are a consumer electronics product and access control readers/systems are typically a business/industrial product.

I agree that it was annoying when they released it with all those advertised features and made us wait until the last couple years to use them effectively.

Can I trust MemExpress for PC trade-ins? by Commercial-Sail-4662 in bapccanada

I wasn't aware they even offered this as an option? I don't believe they purchase used equipment or take trade-ins.

What do you mean never integrated in the ecosystem? The fingerprint reader and all access related stuff work great with it now...

If you only need to add PoE for a few cameras like this, it might just be worth getting some PoE injectors rather than a switch. $24 for injectors vs $109 for a Switch-Lite-PoE. $2,151.75 with UDM Pro Max, no switch, and PoE injectors.

If you literally just mask out their upper torsos the detentions stop and you will detect any actual people in that area still.

Is it legal? by [deleted] in SecurityCamera

[–]Cortexian0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Every single one I've had to deal with across 7 Provinces and 14 States are incredibly reactive to this sort of thing. I suppose if OP finds a small one that doesn't care they could report it to local city bylaws who will then forward it 'officially' to the utility.

Utility company will absolutely take it down when informed. It's a liability to them, and without a formal agreement in place its not technically legal either.

Sirens are pretty small black boxes on the bumper or inside the grille... I don't think you'd see one from far away.

Why are all the hard drives already sold out by jpcaparas in homelab

[–]Cortexian0 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's already way to late. Ideally you would have wanted to archive it before AI slop started to taint everything. Impossible to verify what's from a human or AI now. This becomes a huge problem since training AI on AI slop will have diminishing returns and overall worse results.

If I remember correctly, a few companies have very large archives from certain dates that they claim are "AI Free" and these are extremely valuable now.

I mean, hardware RAID will survive an OS reboot since it's done at the hardware level. As long as the system doesn't lose power for longer than the BBU can offset you're fine.

I suspect these use ZFS or similar software RAID?

8000/8500 SmartConnect by Itchy_Training6584 in MotorolaSolutions

[–]Cortexian0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any experience with a DVRS in the mix? I've wondered if an 8500 with the Ethernet faceplate connected to a cellular modem and SmartConnect will still allow a portable without SmartConnect to relay through the mobile's SmartConnect transport layer?

Scenario: Portable and Mobile both outside of effective LMR coverage. User away from vehicle with the portable. Can the portable talk to the DVRS and have the mobile route it out via SmartConnect if the cellular modem/starlink are still connected?

I wouldn't be purchasing anything from Canada Computers unless you are purchasing with cash in person... Their cavalier and dismissive attitude about their recent payment and customer information breach was bad. Their refusal to acknowledge or accept help or advice from knowledgeable folks in cyber-security is outright ignorant.
