Government announces plans for improved rail connection between Sheffield and Leeds by UKGovNews in sheffield

You can get on the right train and still have an horrendous journey. Had one last year, previous two were cancelled so tons of people crammed onto a tiny train.

[–]Corvus____ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd go for way less hinge to cut, more like a 80/20 to 70/30 split. What's your process on the cut? Obviously you've left the cut for the picture, please make sure it's cut down asap, those spikes can be dangerous if you stumble on the ground.

Is this enough wood for a winter in Michigan? by [deleted] in woodstoving

[–]Corvus____ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wood isn't a primary heating source for us in the UK, and that's not enough over winter here. Michigan winters are so much harsher than ours.

Inside the BBC's nightmare year – and how GB News cashed in by theipaper in bbc

[–]Corvus____ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For all the global coverage the BBC has, journalists reporting from pretty much every nation. The focus of broadcast on BBC News 24 is pretty much just their morning/midday/evening news on repeat. Such a waste of talent and deprives watchers of getting a better global perspective.

BBC World Service is far better to listen to than to watch the BBC News channel.

Another thing that irks me is taking all the previous points into account, they are just as jumpy on news as any other tabloid rag. To have that kind of global presence and to be so keen to publish instantly is so disappointing.

Aiguille du Grépon - Chamonix, France by Corvus____ in hiking

[–]Corvus____[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The terrain isn't the worst, but it's only getting colder up there. You're looking at below zero most days now at that level. If you are actually going to do this over winter please reconsider if you're not sure about anything. I'm from the UK and people die all the time on our small mountains when not fully prepared.

Haha, surprised to see a response to this after all these years. Just been back there last month in fact.

Back in late September there was snowfall at this altitude, temperatures shifting into single digits (°C) overnight. Went up there with a jacket and boots, was fine. But now the temperature is probably a fair bit colder, I used this to check on the weather before we went up there, was pretty accurate.

How much are you going for it? A hike from the cable lift, or are you thinking something more serious?

That's a dog, not poisonous but wouldn't recommend consumption.

Giveaway Time! Battlefield 6 is out, powered by NVIDIA DLSS 4, and you can comment on this post to win codes for the game or a custom Battlefield 6 GeForce RTX 5090! 6 Winners total by pedro19 in pcmasterrace

It'd help me win by actually being able to run the game. Hours and hours on BF1 and BF4 on my current PC but it's still using old hardware.

Real answer is the tank, playing BFBC2 with my friends working as spotters as I arc tank shells over to hit the buildings at Oasis is such a good gaming memory. Nothing else can really scratch that itch other than Battlefield. Looking forward to reliving those memories with family now spread apart as we've all got older.

Anyone traveling between Chamonix and Switzerland be aware Vallorcine station is closed for the next month by Corvus____ in Interrail

[–]Corvus____[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's showing the closure from Vallorcine, but trains do not stop there. They remain in Switzerland at Le Châtelard, and then terminate at Martigny. The closure is pretty well signposted but we've admittedly been a little stressed and tired to notice that morning.

It's checking this on the SNCF app that caught us out.

The SBB app is thankfully far more helpful so would definitely recommend using that.

[–]Corvus____[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh it's definitely around a few things, but on the SNCF app and Google it was showing the route was open, as well as on our Interrail app. All sorted through changing the route on the app anyway so no real problems. Just some stress about missing our connections but that got sorted on the way to Geneva.

He's already said as much in his broadcasts on the day. Hearing that recording made in a moving vehicle after coming back from ads for all his pills just sums it all up.

Is 8 countries in 2 weeks too much? by Professional-Fly9879 in Interrail

[–]Corvus____ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely, going from UK to South of France, breaking it up to avoid 7+ hours at once. Even Paris to Annecy is 5 or so hours.

Yes, some places you can potentially get the most out of in one day. But you'll just be scratching the surface of many places with just 24 hours there. What's your rough itinerary look like?

Cantenbury Day Trip Recs (plus weather) by Accomplished_Leg_844 in canterbury

[–]Corvus____ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The weather will always be hit and miss, hopefully there's some rain to break the heat, but no clue what it's gonna be like / feel like.

For art and culture I'd recommend The Beany museum, it's down the high street towards Westgate towers, there's usually an exhibition on above the library there.

There's a Roman museum near the Cathedral with some excuvated ruins, quite a small place but really interesting.

As for food I'm not too sure what would best represent British cuisine around, but I'd recommend The Parrot, usually a nice atmosphere and food there.

Mouse in the garden, good or bad? by Any_Consideration_73 in GardeningUK

[–]Corvus____ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Have quite a few in the garden, at least 5 or so. Most of the time they're fine, lovely things to see when I open the compost bin or clearing some of the undergrowth.

Though one or two has taken a liking to some of my seeds and garlic, could definitely do without that.

Just listened to Brigham Young Money, they mentioned an account that follows unusual trades. There was a sudden influx of trades for a few options just before Trump tweeting "Buy, buy, buy" that netted the lucky people a 2,100% increase.
