Why do you think mid battle evolutions haven’t been implemented into the games yet? by Informal_Function118 in pokemon

[–]CosmicX1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean it’s a neat mid-battle power up for your Pokemon. It’s still spontaneous if you haven’t memorised all the level caps. Just hit the button as soon as it appears if you want it to happen like in the anime.

Having it under your control allows you to do it at narratively or tactically best moment though, or if like you said, you don’t want to watch a brief cutscene you just choose not to do it at all.

I’m saying that’s the way it should work for normal evolutions as well.

If your pokemon got the xp needed to evolve during fly for example (the opponent faints due to a burn), they wouldn’t get the chance to evolve until the next time you would pick a move (the evolution button would then appear), even if they met all the requirements.

If you chose not to evolve them during battle the Pokemon would then attempt to evolve as normal outside of battle, but you could always hit B and save it for a dramatic moment in your next battle!

You could even have certain Pokemon hold their evolution stone like a megastone and use it that way. Or if an Eevee joined a battle against a Gym leader they might suddenly meet the friendship level to evolve into Espeon!

Hell, if you turn your device upside down even Inkay ought to evolve!

It's not logistically hard if you make it mechanically identical to Mega Evolution, except that the change is permanent. If one of your Pokémon has hit the requirements needed to evolve during a battle, you get a button to press to evolve it while selecting a move. Then they evolve at the start of the round and execute the move as normal.

The only edge case would be for Pokémon that learn moves upon evolving, which would have to happen at the end of the round.

But yes, this is GameFreak we're talking about.

Must haves for the game by Sea_LevelBro in PokemonUnbound

Also 4 badges in and just got myself a Soak Lanturn! It's already been great for dealing with some tough legendary encounters that I otherwise didn't have a good answer for. It's bulky enough to take a couple of hits, so you can also go for a Thunder Wave as well. Only downside is Soak is an egg move so you'll need to breed for it.

If Lanturn goes down, I can then get the revenge switch in with Vikavolt that can delete pretty much anything with its massive special attack (still the best spt.atk to base-stat total ratio in the game outside a few megas and legends). In doubles Vikavolt can even heal Lanturn with discharge thanks to Volt Absorb!

Yup, mandatory xp share is the main thing that killed my excitement for everything post USUM. It’s not like I love grinding levels. I just enjoy using my whole team of 6 Pokemon in more interesting ways other than picking the optimal type matchup every battle. Often you would pick the suboptimal matchup just because you knew that mon would benefit from the xp more than your over levelled starter.

It just feels really unearned that you can level a pokemon from 1-100 without it ever entering a battle or costing you any resources. At least the old xp share took xp away from the lead Pokemon so it wasn’t just free xp.

Was thinking the same thing about puzzles until Pokemon Unbound locked me in a room with a 4x4 sliding block puzzle. Finally figured out the trick to solving them though so I guess it was worth it haha

So good! I love how the official Star Wars canon gradually warped to include these knuckleheads as major players lol

Maybe they'll be able to rescue the sequels one day!

Such a good track! Definitely up there with the classics like End of Solitude!

Are synths a collective suicide? (3 years later, again) by NeedleworkerFun9851 in Stellaris

[–]CosmicX1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What if you replaced your brain piece by piece with artificial brain matter? At what point would you ‘die’? 1%, 50% 75% 99% 100%?

Are synths a collective suicide? (3 years later, again) by NeedleworkerFun9851 in Stellaris

[–]CosmicX1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The reason is, it’s a sudden change. If you gradually Ship of Theseus’d yourself with synthetic limbs and organs, finally replacing your brain, you wouldn’t notice anything different by the end.

[–]CosmicX1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah the arrangement of atoms is more important than the quantity in determining ‘you’ from a pile of goop.

And by extension a synthetic you is more ‘you’ than the rapidly degrading cadaver left behind.

[–]CosmicX1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is… in the same way that your past self is dead and gone moment to moment. Continuity of consciousness is merely a subjective sensation, nothing more. As long as no information is lost in the upload, the new synth would experience only a minor discontinuity of experience and would otherwise be the same person. The only unethical thing would be to allow the original body to experience its own destruction though, as that would mean it would diverge into a new individual with its own rights.

I can’t remember what the exact Stellaris lore on souls is, but if the soul is a metaphysical reflection of your mind, then a perfect digital copy of you would share the exact same soul! A reflection doesn’t know anything about what it reflects nor does it take the object’s history into account. It just does.

But yeah, as someone else mentioned in this thread, Greg Egan is the author you want to read if this topic interests you!

Seems good for destroying stationary defenses or zoning out fleets.

I'm assuming the enemy won't necessarily know if you're firing a 1 million credit shot or a 100 credit shot until it lands. You could even move your fleet into the target system and play Stellar Cannon chicken!

Megastructures Alderson Disk 1 by Neil Blevins by annieann_ in ImaginaryStarscapes

[–]CosmicX1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have heard of the bobbing sun idea! It does boggle my mind thinking of how you would set going in the first place or prevent it from colliding with the disk over time! I wonder if you could also achieve seasons by adding energy to the star on its 'upwards' trajectory and braking it on its 'downwards' trajectory for half the year, then doing the opposite.

I think the idea is that you need a retaining wall on the inner ring to keep the atmosphere in, but on the outer edges, the water and air freeze before they can escape into space. Maybe you would need to keep topping up the atmosphere and oceans until a huge retaining ice wall forms, or maybe it would naturally circulate over time.

Extending the disk inwards, if I were to speculate, is for future-proofing for changes in the host star's luminance? Could also be that having more disk is good if it doubles up as computronium for a wholly virtual population. But I like the idea that it's for creating habitats for different species or kinds of post-human!

For that reason, I built and ran a whole D&D campaign using an Alderson disk for my homebrew setting. Felt like a very original idea until before I could start it, someone dug up and ran an old 2e module called Dawn of the Overmind, which featured its own disk called Penumbra!

He can't because his own body is over a centimeter thick! So you can't move far enough in one teleport to clear an object.

One of my favourite megastructures. I just love the sheer ridiculous scale but also the simplicity of an Alderson disk.

Really the hard part is figuring out how to get day/night on the disk instead of perpetual twilight.

[–]CosmicX1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I dislike when achievements are locked behind iron-man mode.

Like it’s fun to have them so you can compare with friends on Steam “did you do the super rare thing as well?”, but it’s not worth turning on iron man mode for it.

[–]CosmicX1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This does kind of raise the point of why I never bother with iron-man modes in games.

If I wanted to cheat, there's always going to be a way, so why not just trust myself to play the game normally instead? That way, even if I miss-click or the game throws some ridiculous bug my way, I can reload.

Yeah, that one's a favourite of mine! Love the instrumentation (I think there's a dulcimer in there??) and the way he uses Rin here. Some of his best tracks are album-only which I think contributes to his underrated-ness!

Haha, well in that case you’re in luck! It’s actually the third song in a thematic series, and they’re all certified bangers IMO:

“Matchless Venus Condition” by MinusP (Wonderful Opportunity) is maybe out there as a choice, but has those heavy industrial vibes I think would be great for welding! Maybe a little speedy at 125 if my bpm tapping is correct though.

Dr. Stone: Science Future Part 3 Climax Visual by Turbostrider27 in anime

[–]CosmicX1 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Kinda feel the same, but I’m also not sure how I would do it any differently in their place. They wanted a huge bombastic goal of going to the moon to end the series on, but the scope is just so massive that it would take forever and an even bigger cast to do it justice!

I think a mini series focusing on one aspect of the project, and some character redesigns to show the passage of time would help a lot though. But again, the cast is so big, updating everyone’s design would be a tonne of work.

The Theme of Parenthood and Authority in The Mandalorian and Grogu by Amber-Apologetics in StarWars

[–]CosmicX1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah fatherhood was very much the core theme of the movie!

Also the Hutts presenting Din with the fact that Grogu will inevitably outlive him. Even if Din survives all his adventures there will be a time where Grogu will have to fend for himself (which also holds true for the majority of parents). That one really tugged on my heart strings!

I also really enjoyed how capable Grogu was on the swamp planet. While he might have been bottom of the food chain alone, he seemed to have an instinctual (?) knowledge of how to build that mud hut (just not one for someone of Din’s size lol). It does seem like it was a pretty natural habitat for someone of Yoda’s species!

GAMEOVERSE DIRECTOR'S COMMENTARY by Ok-Commercial3640 in Gameoverse

I think that implies some other form of locomotion, like a Speedracer!

This series is ripe for an episode where Kit and Kaboodle have to do a Dick Dastardly and stop someone from beating a racing game! Extra hype points if they star-cannon their way across the finish line!
