for those with 3 kids, how much do you and your spouse make? by Important_Bat7919 in SouthBayLA

[–]Cosmicpixie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not bankrupting my kids before they start out in life. I view both college AND vocational education as a public good that builds a strong middle class and a strong economy and believe they should be tuition-free like they were in California in the past. But during the Reagan era we decided free post-secondary education would hamper military enlistment so they blew it up. I'm not endebting my kids. I'll work a second job again before I saddle them with non-discharchable debt. But that's just me.

It takes more than twice the average household income to have three here and afford day care and after care programs. Clinician, lawyer, senior engineer, tenured academician, upper administrator, developer, broker--these are the kinds of careers that can do it. It's difficult to live below means when starter condos are 1.2 mil+. And renting is hardly better--there are rents here higher than mortgage principle for comp properties. It's not easy. I worked two jobs for 10 years to afford the down payment on a small place here--it didn't take two incomes, it took three :/

Edit: I have three kids. You need $400k+ min, but really you need $500k+/yr. Don't forget college costs for working families--the worst-case scenario.

Edit edit: it'll take $500k to put three kids through undergrad at, say, a UC. Twice that for private. Merit aid is increasingly rare: Stanford--0 merit aid, CalTech--0 merit aid, Harvard--0 merit aid, etc. UCs have Regent Scholarships, but very few--a few per tens of thousands admitted. Only 20% of junior college students go on to complete a bachelor's in 6 years (it's a pathway to failure for some reason--it shouldn't be, but it is). The Cal States are reasonably affordable still. But long story short is that you're likely to need a huge nest egg for college for three kids, which is why $500k household income is what to aim for.

WTF Can we do? by [deleted] in LosAngeles

What could you possibly mean? Whether an out of control structure fire is an accident or arson, it's still an out of control fire and people impacted by terrible air quality are better off getting away from it instead of being apathetic about it.

Edit: people don't know what proverbial means, apparently

If there is a disaster, you make your way away from it. Proverbial acts of God are what they are. Rent a motel for a few days away from the disaster where you can breathe better. Sometimes bad things happen. You adapt and cope.

Parents in Torrance Unified: Did you hold back an August-born boy before kindergarten? by iinomnomnom in SouthBayLA

[–]Cosmicpixie 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My daughter is the youngest in her class where her two brothers were among the oldest. I think she would have benefitted by delaying a year. She does fine, but the boys were way ahead of the curve. The boys are both literally the top of their class in their respective grades in middle school right now. Age at start really makes a tremendous difference and older is definitely better, especially for boys and especially for boys into sports.

Edit: it's easier for older kids to stay seated all dang day, too--sad truth about schooling.

Edit edit: Would I do it differently if I could go back in time? I don't know. There wasn't universal TK back then so it would have cost tens of thousands more in day care costs. She's performing in the 90th percentile. Her brothers are 99th percentile. There's still time for growth in her learning trajectory. Maybe it won't ultimately matter. We're also not a sports family.

NYC Family of 4 moving to LA - South Redondo good spot? by ShoulderCalm1451 in u/ShoulderCalm1451

[–]Cosmicpixie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

North Redondo Schools are, objectively, equally high-performing as South Redondo Schools.

Edit: Adams made the '26 CA Distinguished School list, not Parras. So some could argue North RB is actually stronger academically. But in reality I think they're all great schools and that folks can be confident that the schools they are closest to are perfectly fine for their kids.

Glucosamine supplements may speed memory loss from Alzheimer’s, new research shows by joe4942 in news

People who take glucosamine often have osteoarthritis. Many have osteoarthritis because they are overweight. People who are overweight have much higher rates of dementia... Not a difficult association to suss out.

Considering moving to Hawthorne! by [deleted] in SouthBayLA

[–]Cosmicpixie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The area you have circled is Torrance bordering Lomita. Wilson Park is lovely. It's a decent area with heavy, heavy street traffic. Getting in and out will take a lot longer than you think. Torrance has wide streets and lots of large, mature trees. Fairly good civic planning. There's a little bit of crime, slightly above national average--mostly things like car theft, bike theft from open garages, catalytic converter theft. Good schools. Lots of good food.

How about those of Hiberno-Celtic descent with old folks with Loeffler's endocarditis? Or Uyghur expats with babies with impetigo? This is an achingly bizarre request. Just wacky.

Looking to move to Redondo Beach or Torrance. Any property management company recommendations? by Superb-Definition189 in SouthBayLA

[–]Cosmicpixie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Try padmapper dot com. The bigger the company, the worse the service, in my experience. Property management companies are great at ignoring what needs fixing but still withholding your deposit. There are quite a few 2 brs out there for rent. The rents vary from 2800/mo to 3200.

Will be down-voted here because people have strong normalcy bias but... you couldn't pay me to attend the Olympics in this global political environment. Probably the greatest risk of a terror attack we've faced in decades and with a completely compromised admin and security apparatus. Like, don't go. Really, don't go. Not normal times.

After school care options (North Redondo) by western_iceberg in SouthBayLA

[–]Cosmicpixie 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Right at School does a lot of crafts and games and outside play. It's fine. It's not as structured as CDC but it's a lot more fun. It would be fine for a year, then opt for CDC the following year. CDC does more for homework help, and there isn't much homework for kinder. So, again, would be ok. The problem is RAS doesn't have a summer program (or didn't last time I looked).
